- have you checked your local pound, shelter, or rescue? You are aware that can be a very agressive dog, right? Hope you don't live in an apartment. Most don't allow them
- Price alone should not determine the puppy you get. Sometimes, getting a "cheap" puppy from a puppy-mill will end up costing you lots more in vet bills down the road. If you cannot afford to get a puppy from a reputable breeder, consider adoption. There are many dogs in shelters that need loving homes!
- check your local laws some cities and county's do not allow pit bulls
- Don't get one, they are bred to be aggressive, it is their instinct. Where I am they are now illegal to buy and sell. Why not go for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they are a great family pet when you get one from a reputable breeder.
- Pit Bull need a very strong owner. They are very strong and can be agressive. My sons are 15 and I'm the one committed to the dogs not the kids. Unless you are prepared to take full control of the dog including ongoing training, I'd recomend obtaining another type of dog. In my area, all Pit Bull owners must have a 6 foot fence and most homeowner insurance companys will not provide coverage. Do alot of research into the breed before making the decision to move forward with it. I took 2 1/2 years before i got my dogs. I have two Pit Bulls that are angels but I still have to watch them very closely with other animals and people. If you still want to obtain one, let me know I know a great breader in Houston TX.
- If you're having a hard time being able to afford a puppy, then don't get a pit bull. Pits are notorious for allergies and other hereditary problems that will lead to expensive vet bills, and buying expensive food. Your best bet is to adopt a puppy or dog from a shelter. The adoption fees are usually reasonable and those dogs really need a home.
- Shelters always have TONS of pitbulls.
- Please think long and hard before getting a dog as a "hobby" for your son. The last thing a pit needs is to be raised primarily by a teenager. Most teens just want a pit because they think that they are cool or tough. Pop culture has shown kids that pit are these strong tough killers and if you own one, you are too. Thats why all of the rappers have them, its an image thing. I am not saying that this is your son's motivation, it is just the most common thing that we at my rescue see with dogs and teens. Pit (and all dogs) should be raised in a home with strong discipline. They cannot be left with out human companionship (like outside all of the time) as they are one of the most human-loving breeds. They also need lots of exercise. Mine need to walk 5 miles a day, plus run outside. Know that this is a big commitment. Is your son ready to make this commitment for 15 years? Are you ready to take over if he is not? If you are really ready to get a pit, DO NOT buy one. There are very few good pit breeders, none that are inexpensive. Never buy a dog from a back yard breeder or a puppy mill. Adopt from a shelter. They need homes and generally are under $200. Do some research on the breed. Know that you will constantly have to defend your dog because people believe stupid urban legends. Train him well. He will be your best friend for life. PS. If you do get a pit, have him/her fixed. Do not think of breeding as a money making oppritunity.
