What is the difference between miniature horses and miniature ponies?

Public Comments

  1. Just about the same as the difference between horses and ponies.
  2. i dont think there is a such thing as a miniature horse
  3. It's generally what different people call the same animals. Enthusiasts insist they are horses because their bodies are supposed to be proportional like a horse's. Some people just refer to them as ponies.
  4. is there even a difference? i would belive they were that same.
  5. A pony is an adolescent horse. A horse is a mature pony. cheers.
  6. There is no such thing as miniature ponies. You have mini horses and 'ponies'. Ponies are 14.1 and under sized...... mini horses are a breed. Ponies are a generic term. No such thing as mini ponies.
  7. their aren't any mini ponies you're on the right track with mini horses though:)
  8. Mulereiner is right. I won't repeat it, but give you a website for the registry. They have more info on there. http://shetlandminiature.com/
  9. There is no such thing as a miniature pony. Miniature horses are genetically different than ponies. The Fallabella is an established line, given here as an example.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patagonian_Fallabella
  10. its all about the height mini horses are taller than mini ponies when you see mini ponies its most likely like some kind of dwarf.ponies when they are full grown aresmaller than horses when they are full grown so a mini horse is probably just a special breed
  11. There technically are no minature ponies! There are minature horses that are classed based on their size. If I remember correctly class A is the smallest minature horse with class C being the bigges minature horse. It could be the other way around. Either way there is no such thing as a minature pony. People use that term incorrectly.
  12. A miniature horse, originated from the Falabella, should have the same body proportions as a full sized horse... it look like a horse hit with a shrink ray. A tiny Arabian, QH, or other. Here's a photo of a very good looking one. http://www.theminiaturehorse.com/images/mini1.02.jpg When you say mini pony, you are likely thinking of a Mini Shetty, a different breed. This is nothing but a miniture Shetland Pony, often the same size or smaller than a mini horse, but it has the body shape and proportions of a pony. I never saw one until I moved to Europe. I seems to e a separate breed, or at least a separate registry here than the regular Shetland ponies. I am unsure of height requirements. Here's some nice photos on someone's website: http://slawik.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=27725 I think there are more than 30 breed registries for mini horses, ponies, dwarfs, donkeys, whatever. I myself have always wondered how a stumpy looking mini horse that resembles a short fat pony can be registered as the same breed as the first photo I put up!?? (likely genetics...) But don't ever call a genuine registered mini horse a pony, or you'll have an unhappy horse owner!
  13. Technically there arn't Mini Ponies, but Miniature Horses. But usually we call Miniature Horses Miniature Ponies. But when a person calls one a Miniature Pony they are talking about Miniature Horses, so actually they are the same thing, people just use different names for them.
