Are miniature horses good companians for normal sized horses?

I have a normal sized horse and im think about getting a mini. I was wondering if they are good companians together?

  1. sure!
  2. as long as they don't get trampled :(
  3. I would get a pony instead or a goat. Goats are excellent horse friends. I do know a lady who has a mini for her horse. I suppose it is okay. I would just worry about the little buddy getting hurt.
  4. Hello, On the way to town there are two families that have done this. Apparently so or why would they have done it? The minies look cute out there with there bigger friends....
  5. oh yes.....but as one of the other answers said....to get a goat instead of a mini...bad idea...goats will chew your horse's tail off .
  6. Sure. I've seen people get goats to keep their horse company. Don't see why a mini would not be a good companion.
  7. They are, depending on the full size horse. Some horses can be aggressive to smaller things, doesn't happen alot. But just something to watch for. Fencing for a mini can be a royal nightmare, so that is always a consideration.
  8. ive had miniatures with my horses for ten years now,my miniature's name is hightops(because of four white sox)and has been in with my drafts and ranch horses every since,he used to use my drafts as umbrellas.he is still here short and as fat as ever..
  9. Sure they are. I have two miniatures and they hang with the big horses. They go into all of the pastures. They hang with the mares, then the geldings and sometimes the stallions. The big boss mare even looks after one like he is her foal. she protects him from other horses. They do just fine and can even handle themselves with stallions.
  10. Yes, they can be great companions for horses, you just have to make sure that they get along, and I would also keep them in separate stalls so they have their own space.
  11. Yes, usually, but I have heard of some minis that were nasty to people, so just make sure you pick one with an even temperament. These horses I have heard of are most likely isolated cases, so please don't think I have anything against the breed: I love minis, they're one of my favorite breeds. Just remember to be cautious and see the horse before you buy. But have fun with them, and good luck!
  12. Yes very good companians. I know for a fact. i have a friend that has a mini very cute. and a couple of normal size horses. they are the bestes friends! u should get a mini they are wonderful horses!
  13. YES!!! I don't have a mini but at my barn there is one mini that plays with my horse. My horse is the big bossy brat hes a 5 1/2 y/o paint gelding hes 16.1 hands! Hes so bossy that hes even in charge of the big boss mares. Well when he is with this mini (who is 13.2 hands.) he acts like a wimp, its so funny to see the mini boss him around! I think it a great idea for you to get one!!! And the mini and my horse aren't mean to people they are like big and little dogs!! LOL. :) Good Luck!!!
  14. i find minis to have bossy poor temperaments!
  15. Yes! Although, it sometimes it takes a while for them to get used to them. You see, we had a small, black welsh (shorter than a great dane), and when we introduced the normal/big horses to him, they were a little freaked ^_^ but they got used to him and even got jealous sometimes when he was hanging out with others...just make sure that your average horses aren't very agressive with him. If it's just one normal horse, that should be alright since he doesn't have any horses to get in spats with and trample pony! As long as he gets along with other horses alright. I've seen the combo plenty. In Ireland, there was this adorable little mini grazing out with two mares and their foals, so it should be fine.
  16. yes!!! they are so good together. i used to work with mini's and we also had 3 full horses. and they got along great.
  17. If you're talking about an actual "mini", I would say no. I'd suggest a shetland pony, or a larger breed.
  18. In most cases yes. I just bought a mini and his best friend was the biggest horse in the barn
  19. ya, the normal sized one should be fine with it so shold the miniture
  20. Most Mini Breeders don't recommend you put a mini with a full sized horse. A mini doesn't always realize it's size and will pick on a big horse the same as it would another mini. They can easily get hurt by a big horse. Also minis need special care with feeding and such. They can founder MUCH easier than a big horse. They often have to be take off grass and grain all together in order to stay healthy. A mini is more work as far as I'm concerned than a big horse. He might not be able to stay with your horse all the time. The mini will also need as much exercise as the big horse so you will have to plan on working with the mini when you ride your big horse. A better choice would be a goat. You don't have as many problems watching what they eat. They also don't need the exercise a mini would need.
  21. Depends on the temperament of the animals. My almost 17 hand Appaloosa gelding has a 36 inch mini mare as a companion and they get along great. My mini used to be with another mini mare and used to beat the other mini mare up. My gelding loves to follow her around. I do have to separate them during feeding time because my gelding will let the mini eat with him and she may eat to much and get sick. The only time they are separated is when the gelding is being ridden and at feeding time.
  22. It depends. We had a miniature colt added to our field n he just got chased n attacked. Hes got a section of field taped off to himself but at my old riding school they had them of all sizes!
