How do I start to customise a breyer?

I want to start my first customising project on a breyer model horse, has anyone got any good tips on remolding and the best paints to use?

1. An online friend of mine customizes breyer models.. I think she used to use acrylics but has moved on to oils for better colors. I don't know anything else about customizing other then that! I found this link - http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~jpursley/breyers.html
