My breyer horse has a lot of scratches, what do I do?

He also has two bare spots that I accidentally made while cleaning off old furniture touch up (which has worked before). Any ideas on how to fix him, besides getting a new model? Thanks!

1. Try sanding down the scratches with a very fine sander and repaint with model paint
