What is the name of the movie from between 1978 and 1985 about a bunch of wild horses that were slaughtered?

They were slaughtered by the calvary? I don't want to watch a movie like that. We were watching a western and my mom and dad were talking about a horrible movie they watched about horses, and we were trying to figure our the name.

I thought for a while that it might be part of the plot of "Wanda Nevada" but couldn't find any support for it. In Bataan, the U.S. Cavalry had to kill their horses, but that film was made in the Forties. They weren't wild horses. I haven't had any luck finding a film on this topic.
