Bengal Cats - who, what, where, when, why?
Hi, I was wondering how much bengal cats sell for (Los Angeles Area.) How could I become a bengal cat breeder? Do I need a special permit? Would they mate with their brothers/ sisters? Would I need to buy from a separate vendor? How much is neutering? Will anyone do it for free? Sorry, lots of questions - please answer what you can, THANKS! By the way, those cats are amazing.

- If you have to ask if free neutering can be found - you absolutely cannot consider breeding anything!! a) pedigreed cats are very expensive b) Bengals are not the simplest of cats to breed with complicate restrictions to breeding policy c) NO-ONE should contemplate becoming a breeder unless they know the breed inside out and backward - do you know why you should not mate one line with another ?what might be the potential genetic implications? what those implications might mean to any kittens? d) are you in a position to take back, and care for, a kitten that has to be returned to you. Or an adult cat because its owners cannot keep it? thats what decent breeders do! e) if you have to enquire about free neutering, how will you afford to pay for stud fees, emergency caesarians in the middle of the night, treatment for a sick kitten ........ quality litter and food for the 13 weeks required before they can go to new (loving!!) homes, high heating bills? Decent breeders don't make the money that people seem to think - it is an expensive hobby. If you have truly fallen in love with this breed - fine. Do all the research you can. Join the Bengal Cat Club. talk to experienced Bengal breeders and learn all you can about every aspect of the breed. Go to a shelter and offer ahome to a rescued Bengal so you can begin to understand the breed of cat as they are, and not as they look in pictures. Finally, when you are in a position to decide that you want to seriously contribute to furthering the breed, and know enough to do no harm, - then think about breeding.
- A great resource on Bengal cats is The Bengal Cat Connection www.bengalcatconnection.com - They also have a book specifiacally for those thinking about breeding cats (any breed) The Cat Breeders Handbook. There is also a find a breeder link on the site With all the pet laws that are popping up, you will need to check your local ordinances of permits if they are or are not required. Cats are cats - would they mate with siblings, of course they would, but is that in their or the breeds best interest? Probably not - Before you breed, educate yourself and determine if you could do a good job at it. The breed is amazing! That's because breeders are conscisncious and specifically educating themselves on what to breed for and how. Neutering can run from around $30 and upwards depending on the vet and the location. If you are interested in breeding... consider getting information on the breed and reading everything you can about breeding cats.
