I just bought a Maine Coon Cat...Well, I paid for him but I will pick him this coming Friday?
Any advice for a person that will be getting a Maine coon male cat this coming Friday? April 4th. Meaning any thing I should get ready or do to be ready. Any special sites I should look at. I really can't wait for this Friday. It just feels like Christmas will be here soon.

- Just be prepared to make a new friend. Maine Coons are so loyal and loving. Make sure you have a big enough budget to feed it because they get REAL big. I love them, there are some cool pictures of Maine Coons in Webshots and lots of neat things online to read, if you want to. I notice that owneres all want to share photos of their Coons! Have fun...I wish I had one now, but I had to leave mine with my ex.
- Maine Coons are soooo cool! They're very affectionate and loveable. Please make sure to brush it on a daily basis. These cats are so furry. They have a top coat and an undercoat. The undercoat can get matted easily if not groomed on a regular basis. Also make sure to give him something for furballs since he's so furry. You can either buy some flavored petrolium jelly at the pet store to put on his front paws or just put a little dab of vaseline on them about once a week. Main Coons are prone to intestinal blockages from fur so it's very important to groom him. Have fun with him!!
- Oh They are such lovely cats! I have one myself. Here are a couple pages for you that I hope will help you out! http://www.fanciers.com/breed-faqs/maine-coon-faq.html http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/maine.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Coon Congrats on your new baby!
- I had a Maine Coon for over 19 years, she died just a few days ago. They can be the most friendly animals you ever see. Like another person said, groom them every day because I didn't and her fur was very hard to maintain. Congratulations on your new friend
- I had a Maine Coon his name was Clyde he was one of the best cats I ever owned not only was he good natured and smart he was also soft. He liked to cuddle a lot he was a huge cat he weighed 38 pounds he was grey and white with a big M on his forehead. Unfortunetly my cat had to be put down last year his liver went he was a indoor cat he was 12 years old when I put him down that was just a very sad day. I miss him very much you will enjoy your cat very much because I know I did. Goodluck
- I have heard (and many here are attesting to it) that Maine Coons are wonderful kitties and I wish you much joy when you bring him into your life. Just remember he will not share your excitement. For him going into a new environment will be very scary and upsetting. Don't overpower him with your enthusiasm!
- make sure you have all the essentials QUALITY food, you should start off with whatever the kitten was eating at the breeder's and then if it wasn't something of good quality slowly switch them to something that is good quality. I recommend natural choice complete care http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncccdry-in-k.shtml have a litter box, a scoop, litter (of course) I recomend arm and hammer super scoop unscented. a bowl for food (of course) I recommend getting a drinkwell platnum pet fountain: http://www.amazon.com/Drinkwell-DW-301-Platinum-Pet-Fountain/dp/B000L3XYZ4/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1206721457&sr=8-1 a bunch of different kinds of toys. make sure any string toys are put away where your kitten can't get to them or they may eat the string and you have yourself a big issue. get a shed ender or a furmanator pet brush http://www.amazon.com/Ontel-SHEP-MC12-ShedEnder-Professional-Shedding/dp/B000P9GV22/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1206721564&sr=1-3 http://www.amazon.com/FURminator-deShedding-Tool-4-Inch-Edge/dp/B000PU31MY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1206721603&sr=1-2 nail clippers: http://www.amazon.com/QuickFinder-Safety-Clipper-Small-Animals/dp/B000OZSL20/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1206721643&sr=1-1 that should be what you need to have to get by, I hope I haven't forgotten anything too important, do a lot of research on cats and especially maine coons. when you first bring your kitten home have 1 room set up with food, water, litter box and toys and take the kitten in there and have that be it's safe place keep it in there for a few days or depending on how comfortable it is when your kitten seems comfortable in the one room then you can let it out into the rest of the house, be sure that the safe room is totally kitten proofed. enjoy!
- Here is a link to the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association page. This is the original Maine Coon Club formed when Maine Coons were reintroduced in the late 1960s. Here you will find excellent and accurate information about the breed as well as a community of people who love them. http://www.mcbfa.org/
- This is a drawing of my old "Kitt" on my avatar. He lost his eye to an infection but was still a great hunter. He died a few years ago.He was one of the best cats I ever had.Now I have a Manx with the same markings
- Congratulations! I have two cats of a nonspecific breed, but I think one of them must have some Maine Coon blood, since she's so furry. I'd make sure everything is set up ahead of time in one room, out of the way. He should have a litter box, a scratching post, food and water bowls, and maybe some sort of bed (our cats have a cardboard box with an old fleece blanket inside). A couple toys might be nice too (nothing fancy, maybe just something dangling from the doorknob, and a cloth mouse or two - in my experience, the expensive toys are a waste of money). Just keep in mind that he probably won't be too playful until he gets used to his new home. Make sure that the room is cat-proof ahead of time. There are bitter-tasting sprays that you can put on electrical cables and whatnot to discourage him from chewing on them, and if you don't want him clawing things, you can put up tin foil or double-sided tape. You should have everything all set up ahead of time, though, so there won't be a lot of noise and confusion. When you get him, just make sure he has some quiet time to get used to his new home. Place him in the litter box, so he knows where it is, and then just let him explore. If he's a kitten, he might be afraid of you for a little while, but give him time and some quiet space and he should come around. You should stay with him as much as possible, so he can get used to you, but I'd recommend keeping your distance, so he can come over to you when he's ready. The first few days I had my kittens, they were pretty nervous, and they'd run from me and hide in the corner. After a little while, I laid down on the floor, not too close, and gave a big theatrical show of falling asleep (blinking, yawning, the works). A few minutes after I closed my eyes, I felt a tiny cold nose and whiskers sniffing my face. I think by 'sleeping' around them, I seemed a little less threatening, and it gave them a chance to come over on their own.
