How should I get a Maine Coon cat?
It seems like the ones listed as Maine Coons on Petfinder are not really Maine Coons. Does this mean I will have to buy one from a breeder? I was really hoping that I could adopt one instead! Any ideas?

- Well if you go to http://www.mainecoonrescue.com/petfinder.html you can find Maine Coons. I don't really know too much about the breed but their site says they have purebred and mixes. The most it will cost you as an adoption fee is 300 dollars for a purebred kitten. Try going to Yahoo and type in maine coon cat rescue to see what comes up for your particular state. Good Luck and please adopt!
- Maine Coons are a great pet! The Maine Coon is the native American longhaired cat and was recognized as a specific breed in Maine where they were held in high regard for their mousing talents. Through nature’s own breeding program, this breed has developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited to the harsh winters and varied seasons of the region. The Maine Coon is well known for its loving nature, kindly disposition and great intelligence. Maines are especially good with children and dogs and have always been a popular and sought after companion. You can Yahoo or Google for the breed and see some great pictures, this would help you find one at a local shelter and rescue a great animal at a very low price. Having dealt with breeders, it's like trying to buy a used car! If you understand what I mean. The one you find at the shelter may not be purebreed, but after looking at the pictures, I'm sure you can pick out one that is mostly Maine Coon, and it will have loving, kind, intelligent disposition of the breed. I've had them and they are great cats! Though they can be larger than most cats, did you know that? But, they are so loving and gentle! Good luck in finding one.
