What features are UNIQUE to a Maine Coon cat?
My newly adopted kitten (rescued cat) I am now certain is a maine coon or a maine coon cross, because he has all the features and personailty traites that match... however, is there anything physical that is unique to this breed that i should look out for?

- Maine Coon is solid, rugged, and can endure a harsh climate. Particularly distinctive is its smooth, shaggy coat. Medium to large; muscular; broad-chested; body should be long to create a well-balanced rectangular appearance. Medium width and length; square muzzle and high cheekbones; chin firm; nose medium long, slightly concave in profile. Large; well tufted; wide at base, tapering to appear pointed; set high and well apart. Large; wide set; slightly oblique setting with slant toward outer base of ear. Color should be shades of green, gold, or copper, but blue and odd-colored eyes are acceptable in white cats. No relationship between coat and eye colors. Long; wide at base, and tapering; fur long and flowing. Heavy and shaggy; silky with coat falling smoothly; shorter on shoulders and longer on stomach and britches; frontal ruff desirable. All colors and patterns except for the pointed colors and pattern that would indicate hybridization. Delicate bone structure; undershot chin; crossed eyes; kinked tail; buttons; lockets; or spots.
- Maine Coon cats are really big when grown up.

- Long hair in between pads on their feet is a pretty good indication that the cat has some Maine Coon in them. Growing up we always had Maine Coon cats. They are my favorite breed.
- theyre big
- They chirp at people ... that's got to be a unique feature of these beautiful cats. Most other cats only chirp at things like birds or moths. Have a look here - it's all about the history & legends associated with Maine Coons & it's a good, easy read write up that tells you what is different about a Maine Coon. http://mainecoonrescue.com/history.html
- There are many Domestic Shorthair cats (mixed breed cats) that look like Maine Coons. They are actually a fairly average looking long-haired cat, except for their size. Purebred cats are generally so expensive & well-protected (kept strictly indoors & sold with spay/neuter contracts unless show cats) that very few get out & have 'mixes' like happens with dogs, so the chances are slim he is anything other than a Domestic Longhair. Enjoy his uniqueness for what it is!
