- My mom has a Maine coon, and that cat is HUGE -- which is typical for that breed. She is a variety of colors, like a mixture of brown, black and gold, but not like a calico cat. Her coat is longer than a short-haired cat, but not as long as you would expect a long-haired cat to be. I don't know what else to say to describe what that cat is like, but if your's sounds like my mom's you cat probably is a Maine coon.
- My old roommate had two Maine Coon cats (or at least mostly so). They were quite big, with mostly gray and charcoal markings with some white. They had large ears, as well. One had double paws (but that may not be an indicator). They also had 'tufts' of hair. Their fur was medium length, not short, but not long like a Persian. I remember them mostly as long cats, that were a little 'primal' looking. Still quite cuddly, though! I don't know if that helps.
- I have a Maine Coon and he's 23 lbs! He's charcoal gray with white, and his fur is not super long but he is pretty fluffy. He's also very affectionate and outgoing around people, which is another trait of a Maine Coon. Take him to your vet and ask....
- If he doesn't have papers and is not registered with one of the governing bodies for pure bred cats, then he is unlikely to be a pure bred maine coon. He may have some maine coon in him and it's possible he is a pure bred cat who ended up in a rescue (minus papers) but without knowing his ancestry, there is no way of proving that.
