Cross Breeds

Are Maine Coon cats really destructive?

I really like the Maine Coon cat and would love one. I have two beloved moggies already but feel they'd adapt well to a third. I've been reading about the breed and see that many people find them difficult as they tend to sweep things off shelves. Do they really? Or can they be trained not to? My cats would not consider jumping onto anything other than a bed or chair! I have read that they are very intelligent so hopefully it is more of a question of how they're treated than a breed characteristic. Or is it?!

  1. NO They Aren't I Have Two Maine Coons And They're Angels! YOU Should Get One! I Love My Babys Teckne And Chi Chi Salsa!
  2. Any cat can find mischief and every cat has their own personality, regardless of breed. Maine Coons, like all cats, can make great companions and, like all cats, will get into a bit of trouble every now and then. My cat Angus is a Maine Coon, and life with him has been great for the past 16(!) years. He is a great friend! I would suggest trying to locate a Maine Coon through an adoption network, or a humane society. There are great cats (dogs, etc!) who are just waiting for someone to be their friend; all of my cats (and parrots) have come from rescues, and I wouldn't dream of finding a companion animal anywhere else!
  3. I've never heard of them being destructive so I guess it's about each individual cat's personality which you can't predict, you just get the luck of the draw.
  4. i used to look after 2 maine coons and they were the most beautiful cats i have ever seen. i never had a problem with them, they were clean, friendly cats with a bit of mischief in their nature. you should definately get one but remember they are expensive to buy!
  5. No they're fine, A friend of mine breeds them, like any other cat, you can change their behaviour with regards to that - but get a roll of double-sided tape while training is on.
  6. Like all cats, Maine coons come in a variety of personalities, but I have never heard of them sweeping stuff of shelves! They are generally considered to be among the most intelligent breeds of domestic cat. If you want one, get one. I don't think you'll be disappointed!
