Are Maine Coon Cats Good Pets?

I really want a Maine Coon kitten, and I did a lot of research on them. They seem like great cats, but my friend told me otherwise. She said that her friend had a male and female Maine Coon cat. She said that the female had a very catty(no pun intended) personality and that the male sprayed everything. What do you think? Do they make good pets? She also said that the female attacked people she didn't like. Is this common?

  1. Each cat is an individual. Meet the cat & decide. Consider that spraying is sometimes a sign a male cat isn't neutered or not neutered soon enough.
  2. I have a maine coon mix and she is so sweet so dont listen to your friend. Also, the one I have is 15 years old and has always been sweet. They tend to be a little loud but in a good way like a greeting
  3. Yes, but get them spayed or neutered! Buy from a reputable breeder that raises the kittens as pets not a commodity. Early interaction with humans is sooooo important. Breeds to tend to have personality. Check out the American Bobtail, too. Looks just as good, possibly better company.
  4. Females cats can be real moody, doesn't matter what breed. If a male sprays it's usually because they were neutered later in life. A male should be neutered by 6 months old. I think main coons make nice cats.
  5. My dear sweet Vhannah (who just passed away 3wks ago) was a pure bred Maine Coon from a very reputable breeder in the area. She was without a doubt the sweetest most maternal gentlest feline I have ever met. I work in an animal hospital and have for about 20 yrs so I have seen and lived with my share of cats! My opinion of cats is they are much like people, they all have their own personality and they are molded somewhat by the way they are raised. Also, and I hate to say this but I see more bitchy females than nasty males. Maine coons can be positively lovely but Im sure if pushed they can be quite difficult as well.
