  1. I dont reccommend a tranquilizer to groom your pet. Just do it, if your pet squeals and squirms and you give up, you taught your pet that it will get away with it. Be firm and insist that it WILL be done! Eventually they will get easier to do. Tranquilizers are not a good idea because it can decrease inhibitions.. including bite inhibition. An animal is actually more likely to bite when tranquilized.
  2. After having worked in a grooming salon for 6 months, I can tell you that no, there is no easy shortcut to cutting nails on cats and dogs. It's about patience and persistence, and being gentle but firm. It can be hard as the pet parent to be firm with your animal, i.e. really bear-hold them when they're pulling their foot/arm away from you when you're trying to cut their nail. But really, it's for the safety of the animal. Personally, I take my time, I talk gently to the animal while I'm attempting to cut the nail, and I praise them when they're done. They have to learn that no matter now much the whine and kick, they're not getting away without the deed being done. :) Some animals may be better off being tranquilized for grooming for their overall safety, and this should only be done by an experienced veterinarian and groomer. Many veterinary clinics now offer grooming services, and this is truly the only place where it should be acceptable to sedate an animal for grooming.
