Cross Breeds

What dog breed is this?

I visited a friend last year and there was the best dog at his house! He was medium-small about 35-45 lbs (he stood on all fours and was at the height of my knees, I am 5'7), he was all black with maybe some little white markings, had very smooth silky short fur (like a lab), but a longer thinner nose/snout than a lab more like a hound nose....I want to say he was a border collie or sheltie but the coat was very short, not like those dogs. He just had the sweetest personality and sat there and licked my hand for about 35 minutes. His ears were floppy and short, not pointy or long....I have looked at every picture at the AKC website and can't match him...I no longer have contact with this friend so I can't ask him. I think he might be a hybrid but not a mutt because I remember my friend naming a breed when I asked...Also, he was very active and went hiking daily with the owner so he is a high energy dog. He looked like a mini black lab with more dainty face and feet. I don't need people trashing others who refer to two pure breed dogs mated together to make a new breed as "hybrids" rather than "mutts". Hybrids, unlike mutts are from two purebred parents...mutts are 2+ different breeds with no known heritage. I also dont need advice on where to spend my money or what to spend it on...so if you have a real answer to my question please post it but if you want to debate dog breeding take your self elsewhere Wasn't a pointer, much smaller and the nose much narrower. Thanks though! Quite possibly a small (runty) female short haired border collie

  1. hybrids are mutts. I can't think of any actual breed that fits that description.
  2. Sounds like a very cute mitt. No such thing as hybrid - that's ignoramous for mutt, or worse yet, a ploy to get you to buy a mutt at high price. You can probably find a dog like this at your local shelter.
  3. It was possibly a pointer. They are gun dogs so they are very active and they have lovely personalities. They come in different colours so it is a possible. You also get a few variations (english, german, etc.). That's my best guess, sorry.
  4. Maybe it's a smooth-coated border collie: http://www.sheepdogsforsale.com/photos/Pridee/Pridee%2006.jpg Either way mutts are the best dogs!
  5. The dog you speak of MUST have been "mixed." Not necessarily a mutt but definitely a mixed, rare breed.
  6. Might have been a Lurcher (Greyhound or Whippet X)
