help me choose a breed type of dog and website with types/pictures?
I would like to get a dog. I not really know of many kinds. Heres all the info : 1. I live with 4 people in a house with no backyard. 2. We want a dog that is either tiny up to small-medium (not big) 3. Needs to be loving, not too hyper,Not bark a lot, personality, (I know a lot of types of dogs can be trained to be like that but are there some breeds that are easier to to train from the start with those qualities?) 4. Cute. (my mom doesn't like the ones with the droopy faces or slobber) 5. I dont want to spend more than $600 I'd like to be able to walk fast and maybe jog with the dog as well. (I like french bull dogs. and those little tiny Scottish terriers? how are their personalities?) Wow, thanks everyone! that was quick ! great info ;)

- As for the spending, I would first advise on heading to the shelter to find a puppy you can rescue, instead of one to buy. You would be able to see the cuteness factor right then. I realize you might want to get a dog that has certain traits, but those are not guaranteed, so you are better off finding a mixed breed (less health issues anyway) and seeing if he or she works in your home. Shelters give people the opportunity to have a trial run with the dog and make sure that there is a good fit. Good luck.
- www.puppyfinder.com has a quiz that will help you with this.
- That's a tough one! I'm sure someone will have a good answer, but my first thought is that a really mellow (non hyper) dog probably won't be good for jogging with you or alongside a bike. That kind of activity is best suited for a high energy dog like a Jack Russell. Look through the AKC website: www.akc.org and take a look at all the breeds. Pick 5 you like and start learning more about those until you narrow it down to something you like best.
- Go to either - petplace.com or dogchannel.com. Both websites list info on every breed of dog. That should help you out.
- shit-zu boston terrier or well black labs make the best dogs alive besides coon hounds or u could get a beagle thier just a smaller less hyper version of a coon dog and cost 3 to 400$$... maybe a mini or regular schauzer
- Japanese chin! their good for apartment's. mine is 7-8lbs. very loving, loves to sleep, barks very rarely, great personality!!! go to a breed rescue their about $250 heres a cute one http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10356179, and this one http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10674448. good luck! feel free to email me if u have questions japanesechinmommy@yahoo.com
- The Iams website has a great quiz, the most indepth I've seen, and then it gives you a list of compatable dogs, and you can click the dog name to view it's detailed information WITH pictures!
- I wouldn't focus on breed as much as individual dog. (after all, there are so many puppy mill puppies and dogs around and that is big trouble as you can see by all the problems with these on this board) Dogs are like people. They each have different personalities and needs. You need to find the right match for your lifestyle. Every dog is different, even within breeds. NEVER buy a dog from the pet store, or classifieds, or websites. Those are the puppy mill puppies. Big trouble! See http://www.stoppuppymills.org And many of these breeds have severe health and behavior problems due to all the bad breeding going on. And they are not good with small children. Etc You need to find the right individual dog. For example, a housebroken adult that is quiet and good with kids, or lower activity dog, or whatever your needs are. Instead look at http://www.petfinder.com Talk to some shelters and rescue groups and breed rescues. Have a conversation with an adoption counselor about your lifestyle, needs. You need to find the right MATCH. Appearance doesn't matter. They can be cute as heck, but if they rip up the house or need huge amounts of exercise, not so good, especially if you are busy. Adopting a pet is like adopting a child. You need to take time, and talk to people who can help. And you might consider volunteering at an animal shelter. Great way to learn about dogs and dog care, help dogs, and find just the right dog for you! (and the french bulldogs etc are all the puppy mill puppies, a real bad situation with those! Beware!)
- If you are looking for a small dog check chihuahua, yorkie, maltese, etc. I would suggest going to a local shelter and visiting with some dogs. Try petfinder.com they have some available for adoption. Also http://www.designermixes.org will show you some pictures of mixed breed dogs and give some information about them as lots of shelter dogs are not purebreds. Good luck with your new dog!
