Cross Breeds

Are there any large breeds of dogs that are good with kids?

My husband insists we get another large breed of dog to frighten off would-be burglars. We are fortunate enough to have a large, fenced off yard. I don't want to get a breed of dog that doesn't work well around young kids, though.

  1. bears,the grizzly ones
  2. St. Bernards. Very trainable and kind.
  3. Labs are the best...not very mean, though.
  4. Labradoodles, labs, golden retrievers, etc.
  5. trained labs.
  6. a burgler dog
  7. Scooby Doo always seemed OK around those kids and solved lots of crimes.
  8. Labs are the best! Kids can climb all over them & they don't mind.
  9. Great Danes
  10. eNGLISH COCKER SPANIELS ARE BRILLIANT. NOT VISCIOUS, YET THEY GUARD WELL AS IT WAS THERE JOB ORIGINALLY
  11. I would recommend you get a german shephard, they are good family dogs, they are gentle with kids. They are also very protective of their family so anyone who they precive is messing with them better watch out.
  12. ALL DOGS ARE GOOD IF YOU RAISE THEM PROPERLY.
  13. We always had Golden Retrievers growing up; they were super friendly and great with us kids. Of coarse, you need to remember that dogs are individuals and just because it is normal for a breed to be well tempered and good with kids doesn't mean that it is automatic. Good Luck!
  14. Akita's !
  15. labrador retrievers are great. they are very friendly and loyal. the worst part is they shed. A german sheppard is most likely the worst. they have turned on many of their owners and are very sensitive
  16. Any dog if trained correctl will do fine with children.
  17. Labs have very good dispositions; but you should get a young dog so he/she and your kids can get to know each other over time. Labs are excellent watch dogs too.
  18. well i had a poodle and he was nice with little kids
  19. labs are great around kids good watch dog but not much on being mean but have a lot of energy
  20. labs work well with kids but the closest they are to a watch dog would be to lick the bulgular to death, well if you buy a good watch dog you could let the dog grow up with the kids, which would make him/her a lot more gentle and use to kids hope this helps <333
  21. We have had great luck with Norwegian Elkhounds.
  22. Any large breed if bought when it is a puppy and raised with the kids will protect your children with it's life... Make sure the puppy is playful and friendly... If it is skittish it could turn on you or your children... My favorite large breed is the Great Pyrenese... they are gentle giants, though they shed all the time and are also notorious for digging... Currently I have a GSD he's great but a bit rough and could easily knock down a small child.
  23. Labs are great dogs and are good with children.
  24. yes.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/children.htm
  25. pit bull .. of course they are fine when raised with the kids... it is all in how you teach them
  26. Labs and Golden Retrievers are the best around kids.... if you end up getting a lab, i would suggest getting a yellow lab because they are more calm. I personally have a lab and he is AWESOME around kids and babies. also, they are very protective and loyal to their own owners Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  27. Golden Retreiver or a Laborador are your best bets. I hear Bulldogs are GREAT with children, but read up on them first. They are higher maintenence than a Lab. I'm getting a Lab. My cat will LOVE him. He loves dogs.
  28. a pretty good breed is the Australian Shepard. They are very caring, medium to large size, and they are very very cute. i have one myself, so far for 4 years.
  29. Golden Retrievers and believe it or not Boxers. Boxers love children put are high energy. My kids are high energy also so it makes a good combination so they can wear each other out. My Golden Retriever is the most gentle dog and would never hurt a fly. My kids lay on him and poke and pod at him like he's a pin cushion and he doesn't mind at all. Either dog is trustworthy with a child.
  30. My parents have a Rhodesian Ridgeback, they are beautiful dogs this is their second of the breed. They are very loyal to their owners and the kids jump all over her and when shes had enough she just walks away.
  31. if you get a dog when it is a puppy and train it and it grows up with your children any large dog would be good!
  32. I have a dog that is good with children and that would be a golden retriever. But a yellow lab, black lab, chocolate lab,. chespeake bay retriever and those are just to name a few. German shepards are if raised right.
  33. well i have a great Dane and he is pretty good so you should go for a mastiff or a husky. my great Dane often leans.
  34. I was brought up around large dogs throughout my childhood and they were always labradors. I now have a family and a labrador of my own and I could not wish for a better breed of dog to have around my children. ( age, 7 &9 ), my niece also visits a lot and she loves the big clumsy thing as much asas we all do! I hope this helps you
  35. Get a standard poodle. They arent what you're thinking, like little puffy things with their tails shaved into a pompom. They are quite large, around the size of a St Bernard or German Shepard. They are absolutely beautiful, they make hardly any noise, can be house trained quite easily, and allow my baby brothers to crawl all over him. And because they have curly hair they dont malt at all. Good Luck!
  36. I have a golden Retriever and well I love him he is great with kids and will protect his family with out a doubt but usually it depends on how you raise your dog weather its around kids it should be good with them and well if you are mean to it then you have the chance of it taking it out on someone else!
  37. labs!!! i love them
  38. golden retrievers are the ultimate family dog (the stereotypical dog you see in commercials, barking and running to be petted by the perfect, happy family of four). unfortunately, they're so sweet that i dont know how it would be as a guard dog, haha.
  39. When my daughter was a baby we had a Rott.He would sit between her and the street when she was outside. If she crawled toward the street he would push her the other way with his nose and bark.If we ever told her no on something he would get in frount of us so we couldn't move toward her.
  40. a good dog that is good around kids are the pug they do not bite
  41. most large breeds are good with kids NEWFOUNDLANDS BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG GREAT PYRNESE etc.. check out all the dogs in the WORKING GROUP at www.akc.org
  42. It depends on the age of your kids?! But, in general, Yellow Lab's are great breeds for doing what you want, ie., being gentle with the kids and taking a chunk out of crime! Pun intended. I once owned both the black Lab and a yellow Lab mix. Wonderful dogs. Not to mention, I never had a problem out of the crim'z with them around either!!!
  43. Bull mastiffs can be very scary looking dogs and they are such big sweethearts. People often confuse them for huge pit bulls. Hey pit bulls are really good dogs to and they are good with children believe it or not. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images15/Bullmastiff16montholdbrindledoodoo.JPG http://web.syr.edu/~lrdeguel/bullmastiff.jpg
  44. you should get a lab because there very nice with kids and there very protective
  45. If you want a 'medium large' dog, then get a German Shepherd. If you want an 'extra large' dog, then get an Irish Wolfhound, a St. Bernard, or an Alsatian Hound. They are all EXTREMELY GENTLE with children (although you may want to 'watch' the German Shepherd when it's a puppy, because they 'play hard' and could accidentally hurt a small child), but are very DEFENSIVE and will PROTECT both their owners and the owner's property quite well.
  46. YES THERE ARE
  47. Rotweilers are the best. You have to remember that you have to treat your dog like a part of the family, can't be kept outside all of the time. The more time your dog spends with you the more a part of the pact you are together. Rotweilers (in Germany) were origionally raised a hearding dogs and to watch after and protect the children, ever infants. I own two that think they are cats, and I don't even have any cats.
  48. A St. Bernard or a rottie
  49. This isn't a particularly large dog but I think there are no better temperered dogs with humans than Staffordshires; they're so keen to please and we've always had them. I've found that they're not so good with other dogs though but kids are fine around them. It's really important that the kids are taught to respect animals and to leave them alone when they're told to or if the dog isn't interested in playing, ie. when it's eating or sleeping. Hope you get the dog you want.
  50. There are a lot of gentle giants, but that could also protect your home. St Bernards, Great Danes, Great Pyreness are all great large dogs, that are very family oriented. My 1/2 great dane mix is great around children. She's easy with babies and real playful with the older children. And she's only ten months old.
