Need some advice with my new fur babies!?
I have been searching for about a month and trying to decide what kind of puppy to get my daughters for their forever dog. Someone suggested petfinders.com and we found the cutest little dog on there and went to visit. We ended up bringing 2 pound puppies home today! They passed all the pound puppy tests and they are very sweet tempered and calm. The youngest is 9 wks and the oldest is 5 months. They get along well with all of our other furbabies and fit perfectly into our household! Anyway, as i was throwing dinner away tonight I kinda wondered if I should have just fed it to the older pup. Is this an unhealthy practice? Or is it alright to feed her the left overs? Also, neither of them are house trained yet. Thank goodness I have ceramic tile through most of my house lol! How should I go about potty training them? They are mixed breeds the baby is pug and terrier. the 5 month old is hound and shepherd. Any suggestions on anything that I need to do with them would be great Oh and just to let everyone know, I wasn't acting hasty when I decided to adopt both pups. I have 5 kids and we live on a farm! lol. So, there is plenty of love to go around! They are both great pups, no food aggression, they play and then calm down really easy, and they are both pretty well mannered for pups. They are both going to be house dogs.

- Feeding dogs leftovers can lead to stomach distress and accidental poisoning. Things as innocuous sounding as grapes, avocados, and macadamia nuts can be deadly to dogs. I'll link to a few lists of items that are commonly consider toxic to pets for your review. I was surprised by some of the things on it! As far as a few scraps of meat or plain veggies like carrots - it shouldn't be a huge problem if done occasionally. But remember, everything should be in moderation. And also remember that tablescraps can lead to a begging behaviour that can be hard to break. Oh, and congrats on saving two lives! : )
- Contrary to popular belief, table scraps are NOT good for your dog. The best choice would be a high quality dog food. As far as housebreaking them....after eating or drinking, take them outside. If they go, then praise praise praise! If they dont, then try again in another ten minutes. Keep this going until they go. DO NOT forget the praise! That is the most important part....Soon they will be thinking...hey, if i do my business outside, master is happy! They will catch on quickly.
- Congrats on rescuing a few puppies. It's OK to give your pups a few leftover every now and then. As for the house training you could yahoo it and see what comes up. Good Luck.
- I wouldn't feed left overs unless you enjoy cleaning up diarrhea
- vets tell us people food is bad for dogs look on the food label and see if its got people food in it best way to house break is to use a crate its worked wonders for my lily girl...she only have accidents now and then because she is due to have pups any day
- Hi I have a suggestion a good book for you to read about puppy and dog training, is The Dog Whisperer: By Paul Owens. He has a web site. www.dogwhisperer.com He also has a DVD by the same name. I have read the book and it has clarified a lot of my dogs behaviours. Good Luck
