Is A ham bone okay for a Great Dane Puppy?
I have a 7 month old little baby Great Dane puppy (he is only 95 pounds, just a cute little thing) I have a ham bone left over from the holidays and I know he would love it. However I know you have to be careful what you feed a Great Dane because of bloat and other health issues. I also know that ham can make some smaller dogs sick. So this question is for you more experienced Great Dane owners (Great Dane Lady if you are out there I would really love to hear your advise). Is it safe to give Thor the hambone?

- Do not feed cooked bones to dogs. They can splinter and cause much internal damage. Buy him a nice beef marrow bone from the grocery store and let him enjoy that. I had a great dane (lost her to bloat) and have two boxers and work in rescue.
- Never give a dog a cooked bone...Raw is much safer as it won't splinter as easily...Never EVER give a dog any kind of poultry bone.. So I guess my answer would be no, not if it was cooked... :-)
- Breed is irrelevant - no dog can eat raw pork safely and no dog should be given cooked bones of any kind. So, no, it's not safe.
- I wouldn't chance it if I were you. The cooked ham bone will splinter and could get stuck in your puppy's throat. and choke him. It could also make him very sick and cause diarrhoea. You should never give cooked bones to a dog. Far better to get him a raw bone from the Butcher to gnaw on.
- I would say no. My sister's dog nearly died choking on a ham bone, cause it splintered, and was lodged in his throat. a marrow bone would be best. just throw the ham bone away. ;0)
- GDL would be horrified! NO! Use that bone for soup, or toss it away! No cooked bone is good for any dog, they splinter and can cause major problems.
- I have a 5.5 mo old Great Dane pup . I feed him a soup bone from the meat section at the grocery store every day. It has never splintered. My vet told me to boil them in water for 5 minutes to kill all parasites. The pup loves chewing on the bones and it keeps him busy . They are cheaper than rawhide or nylabones. I would be concerned about all the additives /smoke flavor in the ham bone
- NO NO NO, never ever give any dog a cooked bone. Cooked bones will splinter and cause sudden death. On the subject of bloat. Never ever fed a large dog either before or after exercises. After he has his food allow him to rest for about two hours. Then after exercises don't feed him for two hours. This can be easy. Feed him when he wakes up and exercises him two hours later. Then if you go walkies in the evening withhold his meal until he has rested. Incidentally Great Danes are said to have a short life. My two lived until they were twelve years old. Now I am very keen on dog sports and I prefer GSD's. My first love was Inga a Great Dane she was fantastic. Enjoy your puppy.
- Never give any breed of dog a cooked bone. All the moisture is cooked out of the bones, they become brittle, splinter and are dangerous for any animal.
- Never cooked bones.
- Never give a cooked bone to any dog, or any of the following items: * Chocolate * Grapes * Raisins * Onions * Tomatoes * Caffeinated beverages * Garlic * Macadamia nuts * Walnuts
