Why do people want ALL dogs/cats to be fixed?
Wouldn't that eventually lead to the extinction of the dog/cat species? I know thats highly unlikely but still, if all dogs/cats were to be fixed they would eventually die out.

- I don't want ALL dogs/cats to be fixed. Only those which are not of breeding quality, so about 95% of them should be fixed.
- right now there is an overpopulation problem (at least here in the US) leaving your dogs intact can lead to an unwanted litter as well as cancer. it is healthier for females as there wont be some random stray coming and trying to mate with her, and the males wont try to run away looking for a female in heat. its not just a population concern its a health concern as well. we dont want ALL dogs and cats to be fixed, however pet quality animals have no business being intact.
- Your question is unrealistic, just like the possibility of every animal on this earth being spayed or neutered is unrealistic. People want animals spayed or neutered because our shelters are overcrowded with unwanted litters as we speak. Thousands upon thousands of animals are being put to sleep simply because their owners were not responsible enough to spay or neuter their pet.
- Only responsible people should breed animals - responsible means you look after the babies and provide a home for them or help them find homes. There are way more irresponsible people in the world who just let their animals go and there are too many homeless animals brought to the shelter.
- We don't want ALL dogs/cats fixed, just the strays and the ones that the owners are irresponsible.
- we don't want all dogs to be fixed just those who are owned by people who don't plan on breeding form a stock that is all heath tested, show confirmed and not owned by responsible breeder who know what they are doing and are in it to improve the breed not make some cash or make up a new breed thats really a mutt. Our hope is to someday see empty shelters and cats in dog in good forever home and by trying to stamp out bybs and puppymills that idea can come a little bit close
- No - considering there are responsible breeders out there that know how to breed properly... Most are telling the people who are asking (I just got my dog and I want to make Money how many puppies and how often can I mate her)...to spay and neuter their dogs.
- With the amount ofall the dogs and cats in shelters, seems that they will never be extinct Not ALL dogs/cats are fixed, i mean there still are breeders out there
- There are *plenty* of breeders out there to keep dog and cats as a species going. The problem is we already have waaay more animals than can be taken care of. As a result tens of thousands of dogs and cats are euthanized every year. This usually comes from animals that breed without control (because they roam loose or run away). Dogs and cats will breed if the opportunity presents itself and then a family is faced with a litter and cannot keep them and the animals end up in the pound or semi-wild on the streets. Unless you are a committed breeder your pets should be spayed/neutered. Doing that also generally reduces health problems for the animal and makes them more docile.
- Most people, as you can tell from spending one day on this site, are not responsible enough to handle owning an intact dog.
- I don't think anyone's ever talking about ALL of them. The truth of it is that thousands of animals get put down every year because people aren't responsible with their animals, let them breed then dump the litter or throw them at shelters, which can't look after them all. My current pup was part of an unwanted litter-- no one even knew what the father was (I can tell now that she's bigger). Plain irresponsible. I'd never agree to anything that leads to the end of the canine race-- they are too precious!!!
- 95% of purebreds should be fixed, and 99% of mixed breeds should be fixed. The only animals exempted from spaying/neutering are those who are titled ambassadors of the breed, or if they have a health problem that would make it dangerous for them to go under anesthetic. Pets will not become extinct if only responsible responsible breeders bred them; making pets difficult to obtain would not a bad thing! I know breeders who turn down more people who want their dogs/puppies than they accept. Here's why most should be spayed/neutered: http://www.brightlion.com/InHope/InHope_en.aspx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emGZBLVJmGI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpAXRx8FRRE http://www.dogsindanger.com http://www.petfinder.org http://www.borntodiepets.com
- Adoption centers for pets have tons of needy animals and some r to small to have more pets there. So cats and dogs being fixed helps the population of stray animals stay low so it is easier for the adoption centers
- Seriously? Is this a real question? Our shelters are so over run with strays that over 3 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters. People want you to fix your animals so that they don't end up being euthanized when someone can't take care of them. Dogs and cats will never become extinct due to the fact there are still licensed breeders breeding. Please do some research on the subject. This is a great site to check out http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/why_you_should_spay_or_neuter_your_pet.html
- Have you seen all of the ads on places like petfinder and craigslist for unwanted pets?? This is why people want animals to be fixed... it's a matter of supply and demand, and the supply is much larger than the demand. Yes, there are some dogs/cats that are breeding quality... and if people want to breed those dogs to be it, but there are so many accidental breedings that I really don't see the species going extinct anytime soon.
- Nobody wants ALL dogs/cats to be fixed. I personally have 5 cats all spayed and 6 dogs, all spayed and neutered. This is my personal thing. I love my animals, all of them, but I could not guarentee a lovely life with other people for them, you do not know what the future holds. I am not not an irresponsible owner, but I also know, I would not be a responsible breeder. I have not got a clue about blood lines and I don't really care about them! My animals were all rescued...except the samoyed girl, and I would hate to think that one day one of their babies would be in need of rescuing too. I leave the breeding to the experts and pick up the poor unwanted animals that have no home. Sadly, because of irresponsible owners, there are far too many of them!
- do you see how many pets are in shelters? it is to control the pet population! female dogs also have periods and that is SO much fun to clean up. and generally it helps thier hormones so they are usually more level headed.
- I dont want "all" of them fixed.. just the ones that do not fit their breed standard, or have health or temperment problems.
- well there are a lot of them and if there ar emore they could be more abused or thrown on the street or over populate and overpopulate shelters there for more haveing to be put down
