is it common for cats and dogs to play together?

I have a cat (2 yrs old I got him as a baby) and a dog (5 yrs but I got him when he was 4) and at first cat would try to kill my dog but now they get along so well. I think my cat uses my dog as a source of entertainment. My cat is bitter and violent but very smart. My dog is a poodle and I dont think they are known for intelligence. My dog is dumb as a brick but cute and affectionate. They always run around and roll around biting and playing and love eachother. Is this pretty common with dogs/cats?

1. Well, I have a chocolate lab who is chased by the cat. It's rather weird looking but it's what they do for fun! Seventy pounds running from ten is ...well, pretty weird.
2. Poodles actually are quite intelligent. My dogs and cats have always played together, with the exception on the cat I have now who hates dogs. There is nothing unusual about dogs and cats romping together.
3. WELL IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CAT AND DOG........ I HAVE THREE CATS THAT HAVE TO STAY IN A BEDROOM ALL DAY BECAUSE THEY HATE MY DOGS AND MY DOGS HATE THEM... BUT I ALSO HAVE 2 OTHER CATS THAT CAN BE LET OUT ALL DAY WITH THE DOGS BECAUSE THEY ACT JUST AS IF THEY WERE A DOG...... THEY PLAY FETCH WITH LITTLE CIGGERATE WRAPPERS AND SUCH.... ITS NOT UNCOMMON OR UNNORMAL EVEN AT THAT.... ITS A GOOD THING
4. Sure it is.. Your cat wanted to let your dog know that he was entering into his/her home, and he/she was the BOSS... Now that your dog knows this they are good buddies.. Pets act like people.. How would u feel if a new person moved into your home, and played with your stuff?
5. THAT is so funny! I had a cat that ran around with my dog in the yard, jumpin on her neck and it was hilarious! But, you are wrong about your poodle..one study showed it to be THE smartest dog, and then the German Shepard! Cats and dogs are not natural enemies, and I have never had a problem acclimating ALL my animals, including birds, rats, and a sparrow I raised for 9 months!
6. I think for the most part that it is possible for cats and dogs to get along. I had a Siberian Husky and a White cat and they got along really well, they also use to curl up and take naps together, was so cute.
