Cross Breeds

Why does it seem like people only want small dogs?

People I meet or are on this website all seem to own/want small dogs like terriers or chihuahuas. Is there some reason for this besides the fact that many celebrities have them?

Public Comments

  1. They don't really
  2. yes because some ppl like small dogs and bigger dogs are more work and more responsiblility
  3. I use to want a toy fox terrier but then realized they arn't as good as big dogs...I am hoping to get an irish wolfhound soon
  4. I have no idea, maybe it just so happens that it fits their lifestyles better. I myself am a HUGE breed lover! Unfortunately my fiance is allergic so we're getting the biggest non-shedding dog we can, a Portuguese water dog! Go big dog lovers!
  5. They are smaller so: 1. Meds cost less, most things increase in cost as weight does. 2. They need less food, hence less money. 3. Any medical treatment (surgery) is more for a large dog because they need to use more to sedate the dog. 4. They are easier to manage for people who don't have a lot of strength and can't handle a rowdy lab puppy! 5. They are more compact and can be brought more places, we have one client who takes her dog to florida with her every year...on the plane ;) Personally, I prefer the big dogs :) We have a greyhound and she's the best dog ever!
  6. little dogs are cuter to most people.
  7. Most rentals that accept pets, allow small dogs, and not large ones. They are less liability. They require less outdoor exercise.( accept for some of the terriers) I have four huge dogs..it is hard to keep them all exercised. They sure can't play indoors! I have two small dogs. they can play fetch in the house.
  8. Easier to clean & maintain.
  9. I have a big dog and a small dog. The big dog romps around and plays great with my kids. He is also a great walking companion. The small dog is great for cuddling on the couch, also playing with the kids, but she doesn't enjoy the long walks that my lab loves. It just depends on your personality - what you love to do.
  10. Hello, I have always had big dog labs and setters. Recently my son bought his girlfriend this tiny little Shitpoo which is a combo between Shitzue and a poodle. They broke up and I got custody of this little monster that gives me endless hours of laughter and loves to just sit calmly on my lap. The dog will even ride inside my leather vest while I am on the back of my husbands Harley. So we can take this dog with us for overnights without a hassle. So the answer to your question, they are 1. A fad, 2. easier to travel with, 3. they eat less, 4 they love to sit on your lap without breaking your leg.
  11. I've noticed that too! I have Pugs now but... honestly? I am a TRUE BIG DOG Lover. I'm in the process of finding a good female Rottie now. I almost dont feel right if I dont have a large dog at my side. My German Shepherds were my friends, my companions and also my protectors when I was growing up. I think that maybe why I tend to favor large breeds now. I chose Pugs cause, even though they are small, theyre still full of muscle and a "big dog" attitude. 12. You can really take a small dog anywhere, put them in a little doggy bag and can hold them easier. They also look cuter. Chihuahuas have big eyes which resemble a human baby and we all know how cute they can be. They were bred many years back for the very purpose, to be spoiled and treated like a baby. I prefer large dogs. The only small dog I'd like is a phantom toy poodle. I don't know if I spelled that right. [[sorry]]. I hope that answers your question. It could also be because celebrities have them. [[which is plainly a stupid reason to even buy a dog]].
  13. This is funny I have been thinking this for several days now!! I despise little dogs like the shitzus and the ones with those nasty runny eyes GROSS!! I love big dogs they are so much friendlier and cuddlier I just love big dogs. Big dogs rock!
  14. The fact celebrities have them I think is a big reason. I sure see a lot of blondes immitating the legal blonde movie still! I perfer bigger dogs, but like both. I really want me a american bull terrier...they are absolutely gorgeous. I must say that my Boston Terrier who is 25 pounds in nice to have. You can pick them up and hold them. Fun. Not so much fun with my 50 pound pit/lab lol
  15. SOME PEOPLE LIKE THE SMALL BREED FOR MANY REASONS LIKE THEY ARE CUTE THEY ARE SMART THEY COST LESS ALL THE WAY AROUND YOU CAN TAKE MORE PLACES THEY CAN SIT IN YOUR LAP MAKE GOOD WATCH DOGS AND YOU CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE..DON'T MAKE BIG DO-DOS. DON'T TAKE ALL THE BED TAKE UP LESS SPACE IN HOME AND ALOT OF RENTERS DON'T ALLOW A LARGE BREED DOG.
  16. i think it's just a personal preference
  17. I have small dogs and large dogs and love all of them.
  18. because small dogs are sometimes easier to control.. big dogs require more work and space.. and also more exercise.. but it all depends on the person.
  19. some people like smaller dogs cuz they r easier and cheaper to take care of and buy. they r also cute and cuddly and all and u can hold them and stuff. but mostly they r cheaper and easier to take care of or maybe its just a personal preference. personally i like big dogs :]
  20. I LOVE large breed dogs. I think there are a few reasons people want small breed dogs. i think one of the reasons is that in today's society people are focusing more on work, so they want a small lap dog as a companion. I think another reason is that all the celebrities made it fashionable to carry around a tiny dog in a designer purse as an accessory. I think getting a dog as an accessory is one of the Worst reasons to get a dog.
  21. I love all dogs! But the reason I picked my small dog (a havanese mix) is that I didnt have the time/money/room for a big dog. My dog goes out 3-4 times a day/a total of about 2 hours, if I had gotten a big dog or a working dog, such as a border collie, I would have had to spend more then double the time in walking / playing / exercising. Plus: I adopted my dog from an animal shelter! I originally made the trip to get a jack russel mix, but they would'nt let me have him cause I have children (he had a bad childhood :( ..) so I looked at all other dogs who also had a gazillion <issues> and finally found a picture of my small fuzz on a memo board. He was... hold on....i already made my point..Good Luck!!!
  22. Personally I can't stand little dogs, the ones I know are all owned by very irresponsible people, so I know it's a reflection of their owners, but I still find them annoying. In the apartment complex where my b/f and I live almost everyone has a little dog, they constantly jump all over me and my dog (I have a german shepherd), they growl and bite at him, they also bark non-stop. It's just such a nuisance, I'm sure little dogs wouldn't be so annoying if stupid people didn't own them, but I can't understand why anyone would want one over a big dog. I enjoy having a big dog, but at the same time I'm envious that they can bring their dogs where ever they go, and I can't take mine anywhere. I don't mean to be so mean about it, I really do love dogs, I just wish everything wasn't so biased against big dogs.
  23. Here are some that I can think of. 1 Their landlord only allows small dogs. 2 They think that their house is too small for a medium or large dog. 3 They want a dog that will stay "like a puppy" even when its fully grown. 4 They might be afraid that a big dog will jump or knock over their small children. 5 They want a dog that they can take or sneak into a store. 6 They pay less for food, vet bills and etc, compared to owning bigger breeds. 7 Some may think that bigger dogs are harder to wash because they're so heavy, and that small dogs can be washed in the sink, not the tub. 8 They think that just because its smaller that it needs less exercise, which isn't always the case. 9 They think that big dogs are not "cute", which I would disagree with.
