What to expect from a boxer that has never been around other dogs or children?

I am getting a 1 yr old boxer from a firend who's uncle passed away. The uncle had no other dogs and no kids. I have a Boston Terrier and 3 small children. Do I need to be worried that the new dog will be agressive towards his new surroundings ?

  1. Introduce the dog to his/her new surroundings slowly. Watch for aggressiveness and fear. Try to be calm, but stern about what kind of behavior is allowed in your home from the dog.
  2. Most boxers do well with children, but if you don't know what the dog's past socialization was as far as being exposed to kids or other dogs, best to play it very safe. Any time you have dogs and kids together, it's up to you to supervise all the time. You may want to invest in a basket muzzle (a very humane muzzle that allows the dog to pant, bark, breath, eat and drink, but not bite!) and use it on the boxer until you can get a feel for its personality. Boxers are high energy dogs so make sure you are able to give it ample exercise and obedience training. See if there is a Boxer Rescue near you and ask advice from them. Good luck!
  3. YO DIS INDOW!! treat him as friendly, but know that you can never trust a new dog not to be aggressive unless you know for a fact that he has been properly socialized as a puppy. ask your breeder if the the dog had regular encounters with human, specifically children
