Boxer Dogs, Are they any good around kids?

I would love to get a boxer dog, but I'm also planning on having a baby with my wife. Her concern is that the dog will get jealous and my harm the baby. Can anybody reassure my wife please?!

  1. Train it well and yes, boxers are great with kids...just train it so it's not too hyper!
  2. i have a boxer.... she is the best dog in the world. but boxers are very hyper and have ADHD. but they are very loving and protective
  3. Well, if you give your baby some headgear and a mouthguard, it might not be so bad. Babies are quite vicious when they get in the ring.
  4. My best friend has a 3 year old boxer and a 1 year old baby. The dog is very friendly and would never intentionally harm the baby. However boxers are VERY hyper dogs by nature and there has been times where he has run into the bouncy seat or swing or jumped on my friend while she was holding the baby. The baby has not been injured but could have been. As long as you watch the dog around the baby, you'd be fine
  5. Boxers are great around kids if they are trained the only problem may be they are prone to get excited and may accidently knock kids over
  6. you have to be selective when choosing your dog. Choose the boxer that gets along with the other dogs. You'll find that they will treat the baby as a brother or sister.
  7. I have a 12 month old boxer and he brings so much joy to my life. He is awesome around kids and very protective of my little niece. They are not aggressive dogs, but they are very hyper and need to be trained from a young age.
  8. any dog is sake even a pit-bull, but you have to get a baby one, dogs are just mean and bite people because they were mistreated when they were babies and they become aggressive.
  9. i actually just adopted a boxer. shes about 1yr 6 months. she is really sweet and very lovable. she loves kids. my cousin also had two boxers and he loved them because they were great with his kids. he has three little ones. i definitely recommend them.
  10. yes
  11. Boxers are a great family dog. They are playful and loyal. They are very good around kids but because of their size, they may accidently knock over a little one. They do need lots of exercise so make sure you have time to play with and walk the dog. If you don't exercise boxers enough, they may get destructive around the house but that is not the dogs fault, it is the owners.
  12. my husband and i just went threw this. we have a 5yr old boxer. and i just had a baby 7 months ago. our dog is doing very well with the new baby. its working out.
  13. yes they r good around kids i have two of them and i have my sisters kids at my house all the time and they play with them so i say you should get one they are so sweet you just have to be nice to them and they will be good so you should get one i hope you do well good luck with it
  14. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/boxer.htm I honestly haven't met a boxer who was not good with kids! They LOVE kids, alot. The only thing is it may be a little hyper, so you would have to teach it to calm down around the new baby. Do you have any friends who have kids? If you decide to actually get one you could have them come around alot, or bring the dog to them so the dog is used to having kids around. Obedience training would be a plus too! Some kids may be afraid of a big dog/puppy unless they sit down nice. (I recommend Petsmart! Its about 100$ for an 8 week training session. I have done it the my past 2 dogs, and plan on going there with my Dachshund when she gets to the age requirement. ) <-- they also have a puppy play class; for puppies 8 weeks - 12 weeks maybe. It helps with socializing. But anyway! Boxers are wonderful with kids; but as with any dog you should always do proper training and socializing (esp. with kids). They also tend to be hyper so when your child gets older (when your wife and you decide to have one) a boxer would make a wonderful playmate! Also, to reassure your wife even more google "Boxers and Kids" and you will find out other peoples experiences. Good luck!
  15. my friend has a boxer and it almost ran away with my friend on the leash. my opinion is 2 not get 1. maybe a smaller dog and as the baby gets bigger get a bigger dog.
  16. If you get a puppy and raise him with love and attention he will love your baby most likely more that you will, just don,t push him aside let him know that the baby is his to. I had a dog when I had my first baby and everyone said she would be jealous, but she would sleep under his crib and guard him all the time,so don't be afraid of a dog.
  17. From my experience with friends who owned boxers, they are so sweet! Jealousy is the last thing I could imagine with the breed. In fact, my friend told me that her in laws owned a pair of female boxers (sisters) and when her stepson was a baby, the dogs used to cuddle around him on the couch and guarded him from all non-parent individuals! (one of the dogs, Stumpy, used to cuddle and protect the mother's pregnant belly before the child was born) They're playful & VERY SMART with a strong "mother" instinct! Read this article from the internet: Boxer and Children With its youthful exuberance and affection the Boxer makes an excellent pet for families with children. From personal experience, the breed seems to have a sense of gauging the size of a child and toning down its level appropriately. Although in most cases the Boxer makes an excellent pet for children, a potential owner should always research the breed before deciding on the proper breed for their family. For instance the Boxer is a large dog and could cause problems for infants and young children by knocking them over by accident.
  18. I am sorry, I am going to have to take you wife's side on this one... Young Boxers (up to about two years old) can be "bulls in a china shop." When they romp and jump, they do so with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people. If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Boxer puppies. The temptation to play roughly is simply too strong in many young Boxers. Obedience training is started early since they also have a strong personality and therefore can be harder to train when older. This, in addition to their strength, might present a challenge for a first-time dog owner. Boxers have earned a slight reputation of being "headstrong", which can be related to inappropriate obedience training. Boxers have a very long puppy hood and adolescence, and are often called the "Peter Pan" of the dog world. They are not considered fully mature until two to three years of age, one of the longest times in dogdom, and thus need early training to keep their high energy from wearing out their owner. I would try the link below to find a good dog breed to fit your family's needs, especially since there is a new baby coming soon. You can also look up Boxers on the list to see more info on them. I am hopeful that I was able to help you guys. Good Luck! :)
  19. *Sigh*, your question is irrelevant.. no matter what kind of dog its behaviour around children depends on training and only training.. any dog can develop aggression, any dog can learn to dislike children and any dog can be well trained. I suggest you dont get a dog at all because if you think that they come preprogrammed to like children, you have another thing coming. It takes hard work, dedication, consistency and knowledge, socialization to raise a dog, are you really going to have time for all that if you are having a child? will the dog get the training, excercise, attention, affection, socialization and structure it needs to be a well behaved well adjusted dog if you are busy working and caring for a child ?? think of that please before you get a dog, because Boxers can be great family dogs but ... like any dog, they require training to mold them into good canine family members.. they dont just come with a brain hardwired to "be good around kids" you have to teach them everything.
  20. I have a friend who has had his boxer since before he had kids. He loves the children as much as a person would. The kids do whatever they want to the dog and he does not care. My friend has four children ages 4 to 1. I have never seen the dog act agressive towards anyone it knew. It's basically a big puppy.
  21. Yes.. For example my 5 year old boxer never been around kids before watched a 2 year old i use to baby sit. He actually protected him when somebody came.. they are great with little ones..Another example my sister brought her baby over and my dog just watched him and made sure he was OK.. you wont regret it..
