Why is cross breeding dogs wrong if many popular breeds are a result of it? Aren't Chow Chows the result of mix breeding Somoyeds and Tibetan Mastiffs? If the breeder breeds dogs with good genes why is unethical/irresponsible? There are thousands of homeless animals in shelters, sure, but if that is why mix breeding is wrong then isn't all breeding wrong? I know people in this section can get angry over small things so this is just a question, okay? I don't actually plan on doing this. I prefer mutts from shelters than purebreds or "designer breeds".
Do you prefer cross breeds or pedigree dogs? I love pedigrees and cross breed dogs and I own a border collie and a border collie cross and I love them both so I dont have a preference but was just wondering what you's prefer.
What is everyones problem with cross breed dogs? After all most dog breeds started from crossing anyhow so what is the big deal? I think if you love your dog it doesn't matter how many different breeds it is. I also beleive that new breeds should be able to be established my cross is a wonderful one, both her parents were pure bred, I know most of her siblings and they are all beautiful natured and good looking dogs. So all you pure breed dog owners take a chill pill or are you all afraid that a cross breed dog is better looking and more well behaved and smarter than yours?
What is it with people not liking cross breed dogs? I am getting fed up of people referring to cross breed dogs as mutts and that they are horrible, i personally think cross breeds make lovely dogs and your less likely to get cross in blood lines. If more people appreciated the cross breed less of them will end up in rescue homes!!

question about cross breed dogs/designer breeds( schnoodle)? somewhere in Feb09 my parents want to get a new dog we alreayd have an irish setter and a clumber spaniel we want a standard poodle or a giant schnazuer my dad was a schnauzer breeder for 15 years so he knows everything about this breed so maybe a schnoodle( schnazuer x poodle mix) ive looked at some web sties online like puppyfind.com terrificpets.com and i found some "breeders" in my area but there is now way in hell we are gonna pay like 1000$ for a mutt i will be checking on petfinder.com and ASPCA my question is why people do that why they cross breeded those dogs and then sell them for go know how much money and do most of them come from a puppy mills or a backyard breeders??? no offense to anyone but for me its just stupid that people pay God knows how much for a designer breed like cockapoo yorki poo puggle etc... whne they can go to rescue shelter and save a life and pay a little less maybe about 300$ and that amount goes for a good rescource

What is so wrong with Labradoodles and cross breeds??? I have a labradoodle and I love him to death! He is friendly, bouncy, incredible intelligent and yet with all that he is amazingly laid back at times! We have had people stop us in the streets to speak to him! Some have even taken pictures! Which basically states that the F1 offspring of crossed pure breeds are more genetically sound than either of the individual parents. What do you think about this idea? (My personal opinion is that the argument is based on a very limited understanding of genetics and is in essence, utter crap)

Is there Evidence to support that Cross Breed dogs are healthier? I own a Dogue De Bordeaux x Rottweiler. Both these dogs can have serious health issues especially the Bordeaux. Is there any evidence that a crossbreed is healthier and thus should live longer etc. The bordeaux tend to live from 8 - 10 years. This is a very low lifespan and I would like to think that my crossbreed might live longer and be healthier. What are your thoughts?

Why is it some uninformed people imagine pure breed dogs have less health issues than cross breeds? l have seen this comment several times by to me people who do not understand anything about dogs at all.There is NO proof that a cross breed lives longer than a pure breed and in fact the opposite is true the competent registered Breeder will breed from fully tested stock and not risk breeding dogs with possible health issues.Why is it that some people seem to believe this untruth about the two types of dogs? i reckon cross breed dogs are usually the best what do you think?? in my opinion cross breeds have their own special and loving attitudes and alot of them look better. Why are some people against crossing dog breeds? Some people say that crossing dog breeds is bad and crosses have a higher chance to end up in shelters. This is ridiculous because crossing breeds is actually GOOD for the puppies. It makes healthier dogs because of something called "hybrid vigor". And why would a cross have a higher chance ending up in a shelter? That makes no sense at all. Some people say a mongrel's puppy's adult temperment is "unknown", but that is baloney. The vast majority of all dogs (mongrel or not) have good temperments if raised properly, and it has nothing to do with whether it's a mongrel or not. I don't see anything wrong at all with crossing dog breeds, and it's actually beneficial to the puppies. Forget about the confirmation shows and stuff, cause that stuff is just nonsense anyways. Comments??

Why don't people like cross-breed dogs? I've seen some questions about peoples dogs, and ive seen that some people say that they hate cross-breeds... I've got a cross-breed dog, he's a english x welsh springer spaniel, and he's a brilliant dog. He's 13 years old, friendly with strangers, kids, cats and other dogs and is perfectly healthy and i had another english springer who was a pure breed and he died with a heart complaint when he was 12 years old. So why hate them??

OMG!! So horrified by the stinking attitude of some so called animal lovers. So, I come clean. I have two purpose-cross breeds that I paid as much as some KC registered dogs go for. They have NEVER had any health issues, have regular checks etc. I have many friends who have similar crosses and have had similar experience. Purchased form a home breeder not a 'pro'. I also have several friends with KC registered pedigree bla.. bla's and most, not all, have had ongoing health and behavioral issues. Please keep telling me your experiences rather than judgements, sorry if i wasn't clear. Have been to several dogs homes in the last year. plenty of staffs and staff crosses (of course, heartwrenching) and more than you could imagine purebreeds as well as crosses (which i must say were most obviously lazy/accidental crosses not the so called designer breeds. Also, looking at dog history it seems most common breeds we see now were crossed and designed so it's nothing new is it?

Cross-breeding dogs ? Just a few points before I start 1: I do not intend to breed dogs. 2: I do not condone selling 'designer' dogs for a small fortune or breeding them for profit. I want to know what people think about cross-breeding dogs with a set purpose in mind other than making money. I agree that most people out there breed these dogs to make quick cash and by most it's nearly all. However what would you think of someone carefully breeding them towards a purpose? This is how many modern breeds came into existance today, the bulldog being one example. Take for example the issue of hypoallergenic dogs seeing as the Obama situation has made it such a popular topic. How would you feel if someone was carefully breeding hybrids to develop a new hypoallergenic dog? Let's face it there are very few breeds out there that currently fit the bill and they may not be a good breed for the family. We always tell people to research the breed and pick the one most suitable but here there are very few options. In this case would it not be a good idea to diversify the amount of hypoallergenic breeds? I am not talking about BYBs but of carefully monitored and regulated breeding that is not done for profit. Who is to say that the breeds we have now are the only ones we should have?

And why would that happen!? Mum and dad are both loving family pets, friendly and well trained - so why would their puppies be bad news, just because they happen to be cross breeds?! I had a pure bred German Shepherd dog before, I never ever want to replace him, so thought I'd go for a cross breed Shepherd, so I could still get the Shepherd traits, but in a different physical form (it's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross). Why do people think breeding dogs from different breeds is wrong? I have a boston terrier pug, and ive been reading people's answers on yahoo about cross breeding dogs and how bad it is, things like "people do it for their own selfish reasons" etc etc. How is this wrong? to get a specific breed of dog you have to keep inbreeding it over and over, so if a dog cross breeds with another breed then the puppies will be healthier. Im not talking about a german shepherd and a pug, thats just forceful, im talking about two dogs of the same size that breed naturally, LIKE a boston terrier and a pug. This is why pure bred dogs have so much more health issues then cross breeds, all the inbreeding over so many years. I have a pure bred am staff and she costs me a fortune every month, my boston pug or bugg has puked only 3 times during his 6 years of living. The vet said it simply because he's a cross. BUT it seems like people think the cross breed should wiped off this planet. I personally think they make fantastic dogs with little to no medical problems and have a good life expectancy. How to determine if cross-breed dog is allergy friendly? I had a bichon who passed away a few months ago and am starting to consider getting another dog. Problem is, I'm allergic to most breeds. I'm not ready to get another bichon - I loved the last one too much to get a "replacement" for her - and I'm not the biggest fan of purebred poodles, so I'm a bit stuck when considering options. I'd love to be able to get a rescue or mutt this time around, and have have been thinking about poodle- or bichon- mixes. I am worried, however, about the allergy issue. Is there any type of "rule of thumb" for mixes that indicates whether they will be as allergy-friendly as the parent? Alternatively, is there any way to test a dog for allergy-friendliness (since I think the allergies are to dander, not hair)? I don't want to bring a dog home and find out I'm allergic to it - too emotionally stressful for both parties involved. Thanks for any insight you can provide. It's much appreciated.

Why do dog breeders frown upon people who cross breeds? Crossing breeds is actually healthy for the puppies. My guess is that many breeders frown upon it because they are so caught up in the purebred/show circuit, and therefore feel that purebred dogs are better. And I honestly don't see any reason why a mongrel has any more of a chance to end up in a shelter than a purebred dog. A dog is a dog afterall, whether it be purebred or mongrel. I also like purebred dogs very much, but I don't think they are "better" than mongrels. Purebred dogs just look more similar to each other. Both purebred and mongrel dogs are equally good. Opinions?

Why do so many people consider cross bred dogs "mutts"? So many people think that because a dog is a cross breed that automaticly makes it a mutt. In my opinion a mutt or mongrel is when two dogs breed together either by accident or when they're strays etc. Say a breeder had a pure bred poodle and a pure bred spaniel for example and they wanted a dog with the combined looks of the two breeds and a minimum shedding coat. They breed to two dogs (which are both in perfect health) and they have a healthy litter of puppies that the breeder can then either sell to responsible owners or keep for themselves as pets. If they aren't just breeding two popular breeds and selling them for expensive prices when the dogs are unhealthy just to make money then why are they considered mutts. I personally do not own any cross breeds, but my friend has a border collie crossed with a flat coat retriever and no one has ever called her a mutt. She has a beautiful temperment and coat. What are your opinions on cross breeds.

Why do people call cross bred dogs (and cats) "such and such cross"? As I understand, a pedigree lab bred to a pedigree lab results in a pedigree lab (for example), but a pedigree lab bred to A N Other dog (pedigree or not) results in a mongrel, not a lab cross? I notice lost of adverts in my local paper for cats and dogs that say Siamese cross or Jack Russel cross £100 etc. Surely these animals are just moggies/mongrels and should not be costing so much money? I can't help feeling that these are irresponsible owners who have allowed their pets to get pregnant and are now hoping to get some cash off them. It does annoy me a bit as I feel people are getting ripped off and their does not seem to be any kind of regulatory body. I see that it can be useful for determining the size/temperament of the dogs etc but why then charge a fortune for what is still a mongrel? Oh I see. It makes sense that the result of 2 pedigree dogs will be a crossbreed now. So if someone advertises a lab x gsd then you know it's a cross breed but if someone says it's a lab cross but no more you can bet it's a mongrel. Anwen - I have to agree. People should do lots and lots of research before getting any dog and doing so will prevent you from getting ripped off. Feel sorry for the poor pups and kittens though!

A few years ago you struggled to give away cross bred dogs, now some Toffs have given them names like Labradoddle(labrador/poddle) and Sprocker(springer/cocker) and every numpty is paying £700 for them. Don't get me wrong i love dogs but i think some people are taking the p**s with the price. I am sure they are lovely dogs and great pets but where do the breeders get off selling them for more than a pedigree dog?
Why people get so uptight about cross bred dogs or mutts as they call them? Hi i would like to see what other people thoughts are around the above question, i personnally dont see the problem as every dog was cross bred to get to where it is now as dogs started as wolfs! Please no slagging matches or bitchy remarks. In refer to Amanda G reply, i know there is no right or wrong answer for this question which is why there is no point searching for an answer. and as i said i just wanted to know what people thoughts are! How do you train a cross breed dog not to run away when she is outside? Why does it matter what breed a dog is? I dont understand why breeders get so freaked out about mixed breeds.. I understand that breeders work hard and spend a lot of time improving their breeds...and that is great, I look up to them for that. But why is it when you mention wanting to breed cross-bred dogs they get all bent out of shape about it. First of all if they are just doing it for the money that is one thing...but I dont understand what the big deal is about wanting to dedicate their lives by trying to improve the cross-breed and get it recognized by the AKC. Those people are just trying to do what our ancestors did 100's of years ago to get the breeds we have today. There is NO difference!!! So stop being a dog racist! excuse me but how can two dogs not be compatible??? They all originated from the wolf. And also...if you read my question you would see that I ment what is the problem with breeding cross-breeds if you are doing it for the right reasons...NOT for money or anything else besides the love of the breed. And 3rd...if the shelters are over populated then why are there so many breeders for the same breed??? My question SPECIFICLY says that I do NOT agree with doing it for the money! MONEY is not the question!!!! Love of the breed and wanting everyone else to love it is the question Thank you for answering...you have really answered my question in a way that makes sense! cross breed dogs - what do YOU call them? Here in Australia we use terms like 'urban terrier' for a little terrier type mix and bitsa (bits of this and that) for a multi breed cross. Mongrel now seems to be politically incorrect and even mutt seems to be heading that way so what terms do you use? Is this a regional term (local to your area) or in common use? I have nothing against mixed breed dogs - some of my favourite dogs have been. Our first dog we described as a staffy x brown dog!! Is it wrong to cross breed dogs for a specific purpose when all the puppies are already spoken for? Me and my buddies hunt nuisance hogs here in Texas and cross breed hounds and bulldogs for hunting the hogs and someone said it was wrong. But every puppy we get from it are always spoken for and end up in good homes where they are treated well. Whats so wrong with that? We arent using random dogs, we use male pit's with a female catahoula and a female black mouth cur. And im not a big fan of the blue lacy. The ones I have come across have been nervous. Every dog we have gotten from this is a better hunter than its pure bred parents.
Is there a way to determine the exact breeds in a cross breed dog? I bought a puppy about a month ago, she is 4 1/2 months and I didn't buy her directly from the breeder. Instead I rescued her from people that weren't treating her properly. I bought her as a Bulldog X Old Tyme bulldog. However a very reputable breeder said she looks like she has other breeds in her and lots of people ask if she's got any Boxer in her. Is there any way I can test what exact breeds are in her? I haven't got any details of her parents as I didn't buy her direct from a breeder. So I guess its my own fault! Having said that she wasn't being cared for properly so I feel like I saved her! Just wish I could know for definate what breeds she is! I will post a picture of her later on and we can all play the guessing game!! Hopefully we can shed some light that way!

Ok so I am a giant breed lover and I am also in the Uk where these cross breeds are perhaps not quite so popular YET, but why did cross breed mutts(loveable as mutts can be) seem to became the fashion all of a sudden. Dont you find it kind of odd, that these multi-cross (mutts) dogs are being sold in petshops for 1000$? The yorkie-poos, poodlepoms, labb-skies lol what the heck is going on, since when are these dogs any better than one you would find on the street? Instead of paying all this money for some mixed breed dog, i think people should go to the pound, or shelters for dogs, dont you? I mean there is all sorts of dogs in those places, needing homes.

Why have people never cross bred some really interesting looking breeds of dog? I'm not one for irresponsible breeding, but loads of cross breeds are born anyway. And lets face it, looks play a major role in a dog's appeal, and how well they do as a breed or in the show ring. I was thinking, although it wouldn't make a pet what about crossing a wolf and a komondor- you'd get a wolf with dreads! Or cross a wolf with hairless dogs or a bulldog, and then try telling people it's a wolf-dog! Or a hairless newfoundland?
