What are some of the best wolf or sled dog movies? I have already seen "White Fang", "White Fang 2", " Call of the Wild", "Eight Below", "Snow Dogs", "Balto", "Balto 2", "Balto 3", "New Moon" ,AND Im about to watch "Iron Will". I am VERY interested in wolves and sled dogs (siberian huskies and alaskan malamutes) and I like watching movie about them. Is their any more sled dog and/or wolf movies?
Thinking of getting an Alaskan malamute? I have been having a hard time since my yellow lab died a year ago. Bo was my best friend and went everywhere with me. He was a running partner and the best friend I have ever had. I haven't gotten over it and many people have suggested getting another dog. I really don't want another lab, because that hits to close to home. I have always dreamed of owning a snow dog and I've started looking into it. I am going to meet with some breeders who have a litter for me to look at. I know that huskies tend to be more independent, but are Alaskan malamutes more loyal. My new dog would be living with only me, but exposed to everything from child, cats, big an small dogs. I'm mostly a stay at home person aside from work. I'm very active and I want a dog to keep up with me and go everywhere with me. So my question is, is the Alaskan malamute a good choice for me? What else should I know about them?
how much do alaskan malamutes, alaskan huskies, and siberian huskies cost? how much do these breeds cost? because soon...we'll be getting a dog and my mother is like a huge fan of the three breeds i listed above, i mean she like literally loves huskies and malamutes lol i think she feel in love with them from the movies "snow dogs" and "eight below" and the puppy shasta from "snow buddies" ("i love those movies btw") and i thought "why not just get 3 of each instead of just one?", you know because these dogs do prefer to live in a packs with other dogs, we wouldn't mind buying them off a reputable/responsible breeder or rescuing them from an animal shelter, and btw what was your experiences with malamutes and huskies, i'm started to fall in love with these breeds lol and i'm more of a fan of pits, rotties, dobermans, bull terriers, german shepherds, and bulldogs. i wouldn't mind having a siberian/alaskan husky mix and an malamute or a mix with all three lol these dogs are really beautiful, what is your experiences with the breed or breeds lol and how many do you have ("if you do") or had in the past, please tell me and also how much do they usually cost?
Does anyone have a female miniature american eskimo 1 yrs. old? Well, my baby's name is Sesi, which means 'snow' in Alaskan dog names. She just turned a year old. She is very hyper. She barks at everything, not as bad inside than outside. When she goes outside she won't come back in, thankfully there is a fence, but she just out there doing laps and running from you. There's many things I could write but I just wanted to get feedback from other min. eski owners. Thank you so much for your time doing this.
I just adopted an alaskan malamute and i got a question? We put some food in bowl outside and he just flipped it and buried it in the snow anyone know why he did this he didn't eat any of his food either but other owners said he ate the dog food we've been giving him. So anyone can help me?
Is this physics question right? its on forces in one dimension? three confused sleigh dogs are trying to pull a sled across the alaskan snow. Alutia pulls east with a force of 35 N, Seward also pulls east but with a force of 42 N, and big Kodiak pulls west with a force of 53 N. what is the total net force on the sled? My answer is 24 N. is this right?
Is the heat of Las Vegas too much for my dogs? My husband and I are living in Michigan and two of our dogs love the cold weather (We have a Siberian Husky and an Alaskan Klee kai) My husband was offered a job in the Las Vegas area and we are thinking of him taking it. The only problem we have is that we think it might be too hot for the dogs out there. They LOVE to be indoors most of the time anyway, but I can't help but worry about the heat there. We are originally from California but decided to move to MIchigan for a little while (some relatives live here) One of the main reasons moving to Michigan was so the dogs could have snow. I don't want to move if the dogs will be miserable. Do you have any advice on what to do? Or do any of you husky owners live in Vegas? My dogs are outside a lot. They love to play in the backyard and go for walks, to parks, etc. I just meant they would prefer to be indoors more then outside :o) Thanks for the all the great answers. We would for sure have good air conditioning. Also the idea about the cool mat is a wonderful idea! I had my Klee Kai for about 3 years in California and the Siberian Husky was not even a year old when we moved. They didn't mind the heat, but it never got that bad as I know vegas can get :o) Also, my husband works from home now and if we moved to vegas he would be doing the same thing he is now, only working in an office and making more money that way. I would not mind leaving Michigan at all. I dont' care for it much here at all. I do love that my parents are here, and I love the snow, but I do miss California so much and that's another concern I have about moving to Vegas. I wanted to get back to California. Although it would be a much faster road trip from Vegas to California then MIchigan to California!!!
Whats a good/easy to way to start dog agility training? And also . . . .? So I want my dog (siberian husky/alaskan malamute cross) to be in a dog sport and I was thinking agility. But she is 5 years old and so is it too late to start her on that? What might be other dogsport opportunities for her? I know that there's dog sledding but we don't have very much snow where I live, nor the materials at our house/area.
The best and worst breeders of your breed? Excluding yourself if you are a breeder of course, but who do you think is the absolute best breeder for your breed? The worst? My choice for best is Snow Lion. They work their dogs, show them, do all the health testing, and regularly compete in the Iditarod with their Alaskan Huskies and sometimes Malamutes. Worst? Any of them who produce "Giant Malamutes. Their like the "bully hippo" version of Malamutes.
Keeping an Alaskan Malamute Outside? Is it really that bad? I have wanted an Alaskan malamute for years now. I am 14 and I asked my mum a couple of months ago and she said she wants no more animals in the house. We have one cat already, and I am grateful but cats are independent and as much as she is like my right hand (she follows me everywhere, goes out for walks and that) but a Dog would be so much more (in my opinion). I could take it for walks, it'd rely on me, I'd have a friend - for once - and I'd enjoy looking after it. Alaskan Malamute - They're built for snow, and in cold england it'd be perfect! x) We have a shed its really big - if all dogs lived in medium sized cages, this shed would be a mansion x2. You'll have to trust me. It is big enough. I have persuaded my friends dad, and my friend to help me convert it into a warm, weatherproof building. It already has proper walls, and roof but no insulation etc. I was also thinking I would convert the inside so that I could do my work in there. Homework, art word ETC. Anyways, I know that Dogs are a big responsibility but I am responsible enough. :P Ah I know every teenager will say that but its true. :L My question is just, would an Alaskan malamute be okay living out side. maybe it will come inside on the off chance when my parents are out, but it would genera ll live out side in a our large garden in a large shed with a quality heater, practically 24/7? I would go down and see it all the time, as My mum was going to first convert the shed so i'd HJE some where to retreat to and hide away - cause that's what i like doing. xD Our garden is also secure, so it couldn't get out or anything get in. Anyhow, please be honest but polite and no bashing or being harsh. ^^ Thanks!
What kind of dog should I get? How much money do you need to maintain a dog? http://www.vicpark.ws/images_site/DogControlPhoto.JPG http://www.shortorderdogs.com/Images/HyperCart_Images/littleDogsRock.jpg http://www.marylanddogsledding.com/images/TBone_Snow_Dogs.jpg http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images12/AlaskanKleeKaiKaia1.JPG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/68/Standard_Alaskan_Klee_Kai.jpg/485px-Standard_Alaskan_Klee_Kai.jpg http://www.dog-breeds.net/pattefrdaale2fa.JPG http://en.wikivisual.com/images/6/63/Roodog2k-ivan-and-boxer.JPG what kind of dog is that on the left? How to teach dogs mushing commands? I have 4 Siberian Huskies and 2 Alaskan Malamutes Tasha-Malamute-1 1/2 years old Mia-Malamute-2 years old Sydney-Husky-8 months Noah-Husky-8 months Collin-Husky-8 months Andre-Husky-8 months How would I teach these dogs mushing commands? During the winter where I live we get a ton of snow so it would be pretty cool to take the dogs out running one of those days but I can't do it because the dogs don't know any of the commands. Also, these dogs have spent their entire lives outside and when I try to bring them in the house they go crazy, my guess, they just don't like being indoors. Would it be alright if I leave them outside? I have read comments from people on here and they say that dogs love to be with their people. These dogs in particular do love to be with people but they just prefer life outdoors. And yes they are on heartworm preventative and UTD on all vaccines
Net force physics question? Three confused sleigh dogs are trying to pull a sled across the Alaskan snow. Alutia pulls east with a force of 35N, Seward also pulls east but with a force of 42N, and big Kodiak pulls west with a force of 53N. What is the net force on the sled?
HELP! 10 points BEST ANSWER!!? How does the setting of a story(cold icy alaskan) affect its main character(a man training his snow dogs for a race that gets wounded when he falls in an ice gully)??? THANK YOU!!
Physics plz!!? Please help me get the answer.....I would appreciate it. Three confused sleigh dogs are trying to pull a sled across the Alaskan snow. Alutia pulls East with a force of 35 N, Seward also pulls East but with a force of 42 N, and big Kodiak pulls West with a force of 53 N. What is the net force of the sled?
PeePee pads.....? My 3 puppies ( yikes, i know) have learned how to pee on the puppy pads, but when it comes to pooping, they go everywhere EXCEPT for the pad. Some people would say to put the dogs in the fence during the day to help with the indoor mess. But my dogs are NOT outside dogs. They are snow dogs with LONG thick hair and it is 100+ degrees out here during the day. So that wont work Does it have something to do with the fact that they are all boys? or is it the breeds? ( 1 is a Siberian Husky, 1 is a Giant Alaskan Malamute, and 1 is a pomeranian) Why can't they use the pad for number two? I have even tried putting down several pads. What can I do? I am tied of having to scrub the floor.
Which dog breed is better for my situation? I live in Texas but my dog would be an inside dog except for playing etc..I take trips to Colorado every winter so they would be able to play in the snow :) Im interested in A Husky, Alaskan Malamute or a Samoyed?????
dalmatian, german shepard, golden retriever, alaskan husky, or a yorkie? okay, so i would love a big dog. loyal, trust worthy, loves his owner, but it might not be best fit. see, when i get a lisence, i am buying a 2005 chevrolet express cargo van, and making it a home: i will put in house carpet, put in a TV with a DVD player attached to it on the roof. i will put in a case for black and white movies, and a small connected-to-the-wall bed that flips.like the kind thats attached to the wall and you flip it down, instant bed. i am getting out of here as soon as possable. west of the mississippi, i have always wanted to go there. anywhere past it. so my parents cant get me. you see, my parents kinda hate me, they really do not want anything to do with me and almost put me up for adoption, but they couldnt because of various issues. but, they kept me and gave me clothes and a roof... yeah nothing else. so i have a job, i make plenty of money. for myself. i have to eat and everything too, ya know? so anyways thats how i am going to pay for the van and all that i want to do to it. and gas. one problem- i dont want to be lonely. i have always had a dog, but i havent for a long time. i want a medium sized dog that is loyal and will be able to do well in a car. but, since its a van that i will live in, would an aslaskan husky really work? or should i get a dog that will sit on my lap as i drive down the highway? or a "real dog?" even though it will barely fit? i think i would be able to make a customized passenger seat that a dog can sit in and look out the window, maybe even stick its head out the window. it could have like a little ramp so it can walk up, and just sit. and maybe make it long enough so it can lie down. i would be able to walk it, when ever i get to a coast, or some other outside dog-friendly area. i can walk a few miles, it would be good for me, too. also a great way to get some girls :) good conversation starter. as far as feeding the dog, i will be able to easily. i will just have to buy one of those fancy dog food and water despencers and just buy a lid for them and problem solved. learning to drive- well, yes i do need more experience behind the wheel. so, which is why i get my parents to buy me a truck, and i just learn with that. plus classrooms, of course. i have a feeling i will be a good driver, despite statistics. but i really doubt i will get into any major crashes. now onto the dog. i would like any of them, just, which should i get? of course i will pay for him/her to be neutered/spaded, vaccines, examanated, ect. but the van would be an extended wheelbase, so a bit bigger. and it would have real walls. and sound proof it, so when you take a step it doesnt echo. and all wheel drive, in case i go crazy and want to go into snow for some idiotic reason. so, now that you all know my future, which would be best? get him now, so i can raise him...i would prefer an alaskan husky, or a dalmatian. or, if i had to get a toy dog, a yorkie or a shih tzu. or some medium sized dog? you tell me. remember- if my dog cant go, i dont go. so, yeah my dog goes where i go. there are plenty of people who do this. especially pickers, semi drivers, ect. why would it be different for me? plus there are truck stops throughout america. they have showers, food stores, PET STORES, ect. plus shedding isnt really anything for me. i have no allergies. and they DO make vaccumes that are just little hand sized things. i clean cars for even more extra cash, im fine with cleaning.
alaskan malamute problems? i have a dog that sheds a lot of hair and my dad lets him in sometimes for the night when its minus 10 or lower. first of all i think that the hair that sheds from him flies around the house after where we breathe and gets into our lungs which is not good and can cause lung or breathing problems. second of all he is a malamute and has a dog house outside with hay inside to keep warm. as a alaskan malamute i have read that they can survive in the cold and even sleep on snow with very low temperatures. my dad disagrees and says oh poor little doggy is so cold and lets him in for the night. this is really bothering me what should i do?
Please Read...Is my Story Good? This is called Wolf Unwanted. It's the prologue. It's kinda sad in the beginning, so...here it is. “Mama, Mama! Where are you?” Phoenix trampled along the Alaskan snow, tripping every once in a while. Mama was lying on the cold snowy ground while her husky puppies were sleeping beside her. She did not bother to answer him. Phoenix was a five-month-old Siberian husky. He was brown and white, while the others, including Mama, were black and white. He looked much like a wolf. “Mama?” After Phoenix’s fifth call, she sighed and said, “I am right here, Phoenix.” Phoenix smiled and found Mama and the litter of puppies. One of the puppies named Veronica sat up. “Hush up, Phoenix! We’re trying to sleep!” The rest of the pups agreed. Mama had sixteen puppies. “Mama,” Apollo remarked, “I think I heard something. It sounds like…” Suddenly, a gunshot was heard. “Hurry, we must get to the den!” Mama and the pups ran to the biggest tree. Their den was behind the tree. It was very hot in the den. The puppies were all squished. Finally Mama pushed Phoenix out of the den. “Go, Phoenix.” Phoenix was speechless. “To where?” “Go, just go. There is very little space in the den, and I cannot feed you anymore. Go!” Mama pushed Phoenix again, and Phoenix ran. Tears ran down his face. Phoenix looked back. “Go!” His mother was firm, “Go!” Phoenix heard another gunshot. Again, Phoenix started to run. He saw a shadow of man. The hunter had found him. He back away slowly toward the wall. “I got you now, dog. You will make good food for me and family. You will do very well. Very well…” Phoenix closed his eyes and whimpered as the hunter took out his gun. At last he heard barking and howling. He opened his eyes. Wolves! Wolves were attacking the hunter! Phoenix let out a yelp of joy. Five minutes later, the wolves stopped. The hunter struggled to get up. One of the wolves stood close to the hunter, teeth bared. He was growling slightly, the hunter started to frantically run away. The wolf looked at the pup and saw that he was fast asleep. “Mary, go get him.” A female wolf approached Phoenix and picked him up with her teeth. “Let’s go.” “Rex, what are we going to do with this wolf pup? He is not ours,” Sampson asked, a firm follower of Rex, the leader. The wolf, Rex, shook his head. “I do not know. I have a feeling, and it is a good one. This wolf might be worth it.” Rex led the pack back into the cold depths of the snow and made their way to the woods.
Anyone have suggestions on a name for my Bichon Frise puppy? The Bichon Frise is a small white dog. They have a very soft, curly coat of hair, and are from France. Here's some of the ideas that I came up with: Bubbles Alaska Dakota Destiny. Sesi-it's Alaskan Keleki- it's Hawaiian and from France: Serea- means magic Neige-means snow Bisou-means Kiss
Whats a good kennel name? its in northern maine and hidden. its for a dog sled team. it snows a lot here so we were thinking of something with winter in it but we don't know. there all siberian or alaskan huskies. theres also 8 dogs if thats any help! plz help me!!!
Dog Clothing can be functional. ? This really isn't a question, it's generally my opinion. I own two miniature toy mix poodles, both under 10 pounds (they're rescues, in case you were wondering about the weird mix) I live in Ontario Canada, I if you're unfamiliar with the climate in this area, the temperature ranges anywhere from 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) all the way down to -40 degrees Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit) within the months of October to March, sometimes April. The rest of the year temperatures are much warmer, in the Summer months we wear tank tops and shorts.Anyway, unless you're a snowman, I'd consider this kind of winter pretty damn cold, especially for two small dogs. I'm an avid dog walker, I love walking my dogs, and they love it to, but I make sure they are appropriately dressed for this type of bitter winter. In the milder winter temperatures (when I need a jacket and a sweater) My dogs wear a knit sweater. They don't mind, they appreciate it, otherwise they would be shivering, I've seen them do it. In the dead of winter, they wear a knit sweater with a winter jacket for dogs. Also, they haven't protested with this, I'm sure they appreciate it too. My dogs love to walk, and love to walk in extreme cold because they can't feel it for the most part, they're wearing appropriate clothing. My older dog loves to run, I take her to the park (on her 26 foot flexi leash) and let her run in the snow. Mind you, it is sometimes 6 inches deep, sometimes 10 inches. But she loves it. When she isn't dressed, she shivers, cries out, wants to go home. When she is wearing her jacket and her boots (yes her boots) she can go on forever. I can't deny my dog this pleasure, she looks amazingly happy running in the snow and I love to watch her have a great time. She doesn't protest to her boots, they're comfortable and I made sure of that. She understands what her boots mean, whenever I take them out she gets very excited, because she knows we are going to run in the snow together. Anyway, this is my blurb on what I think is appropriate dog wear. Some people but light rain jackets on their dogs when they walk in the rain, and I understand this as well. I think weather related dog clothing is functional, and that's how a dog should dress. I don't see a need for clothing in a place like California, that wouldn't be functional. Items like Doggles, dresses, pants, and t-shirts are the real problem. So when people talk about dressing their dogs for the winter months, I find it silly when I see people commenting back about how their "abusing their dogs" by making them wear these clothes. Sometimes it is necessary, given the circumstances. If I owned an Alaskan Malamute, a Lab or even a Standard Poodle, I'm pretty confident I wouldn't dress my dog, but because mine happen to be small and lean, they need the extra padding. Thanks for reading, if you did, just getting my point across. If you tl;dr, I pretty much said, winter is cold my dogs wear jackets.

should i get a german shepherd? i am thirteen and getting a dog. i am looking at this german shepherd at an animal shelter that has been through guide dog training. but im not sure if a gsd is right for me. i want a loyal dog tht will want to play with me and be friendly to other people also. i need a dog that can tolerate snow and cold and heat in the summer because it has to be an outside dog. i have a large yard with a buit in dog kennel but the dog will live in the yard not the kennel.(the kennel is just for protection and food). i will have to go to school and would leave a lot of toys in the yard for it. then when i get home i will take it on a walk train it and play with it. if a german shepherd isn't right for my lifestyle could someone please give me the name of another breed? i also like siberian huskies, alaskan malamutes, aussies, border collies, and labs. im not getting a puppy, im getting an adult dog. ps. i dont want to sound rude but could yuo please not say anything about how nt to keep a dog outside because i just cant have one inside.
We have a Siberian Husky. More questions? She is a 4 month old Husky. We were told that the mother had some Akita in her. But her trainer told mum that she was pure Siberian. We got her cheap. But today after she had scratched my arm my mum noticed her claws came out like a cats. I watched Dog 101. And Alaskan Malamutes claws do that. And they are sharp at the tip. Thats for the snow. She has blue eyes and creme and white colour hair or fur. What is she? I would include a picture but I'm on my phone. Sorry
How to make an animal sanctuary? Well, I have this many animals: Dogs: 1. I have had him as long as I can remember. Now, he is 13 years old. He has been run over 3 times, broken his back, cannot hear, never mind see, he has a bit of teeth, and is a pug/chihuahua mix. He is black with a graying beard. He has stolen my heart. He is supposed to take half a baby aspirin a day, but I forget, and hopefully this will help me remember. His name is Teddy. 2. I have a 5 month old puppy. (will be 6 months on my B-Day which is September 29th) His mom is Alaskan Malamute/Shar-pei mix. His dad is a Boxer/Neapolitan Mastiff. So, you can tell how big he is, and how big he will be. He is a entertaining little rascal who is potty trained, kennel trained, and knows "sit" on command. I trained him myself. He is white with brindle ears, and a brindle spot just before his tail begins. He also has a spot right beside his right eye. His brother was the same, but had blue eyes. He. on the other hand was born with hazel eyes. I love him to death! His name is Jax. (Pronunciation: Ja-cks) 3. I rescued a purebred Boston Terrier. I was picking up a 4-wheeler at a gas station which had just closed, and he ran out in the rain, and cold to us. So, we put him in the car, and looked at him in the light. He has TONS of scratches, bruises, and scars on the inside of his back legs. I am not sure why. He was also trying to get the small hot dog scraps we had from earlier. He was STARVING!!! So, we found him a home, and we are waiting on them to come, and get him. We gave him the temporary name Lightning because he is fast. Cats: 1. I got my current cat from a pound when she was 4 months old. She is a calico. She is now 6 years of spoiled rotten fur! She won't gain weight for some reason though... (No, she does not have worms.) She is sleeping on my stairs at the moment. Her name is Patches. 2. I was feeding my used-to-be outside Boxer when I noticed footprints in the snow. They were cat footprints, and they led from my playhouse to the spilled dog food which I accidentally spilled in the 4ft. snow. Well, about a month of snow later I went out the door to go to school, and there sat a black cat with green eyes. So, my Dad said she could stay if she killed mice. (We recently had an experience with a visitor.) I took her out some food, and when I came back out with it she was eating a baby mouse! So, she stayed. Outside. Well, in that 2 year time frame she has had 3 litters of kittens, and shew has one currently. 6 were born, but one was born ill, and died a day later...Her name is Bella. Sugar Glider: His name is Swiper, and I got him from a friend. He was kept in a pyramid shaped cage which was no more than 1ft. tall at the highest. It had a ball on one side, and a tube on the other. He was alone, and kept by a man who never got him out. So, my friend got him for Christmas. She was scared of him, and got one that was already tamed, and sits with you so he had a friend. Well, he attacked it, and she gave him to me. I built him a 4ft. by 4ft. cage, and now he is happy. Anyways, he is very mellow now, because I get hi out a bunch. He occasionally bites, but it is uncommon. Turtle: He just came in for winter. He is an Eastern Painted Turtle named Crush, and is semi-sweet. As sweet as a turtle gets I guess because he is always calm, an likes scratches on his head. He used to have two frogs for companions, but they all left yesterday for Winter... :'( So, yeah. Algae Eater: He is just here to help with house cleaning, but everything needs a name. So, I named him Jed. I am not sure why. So, how do I make them all a little area that they will love? (Without money.) I have a 12ft. by 31. ft. bedroom they will share, but I am going to fix the dogs kennels which will be their area, the cat outside will have a dog house, the cat inside will have an area, the Algae Eater will have the tank with the turtle, and the sugar glider will have his cage in the living room. Just give me a few things that should be in their area, and please be specific. I will choose a best answer, and SORRY THID WAS SOOO LONG!!! I already have the stuff, I just need to know what to do with it. They have tanks, and kennels, and cages.
what kind of a dog should i get? sadly, my dog is about to die. he is a shih tzu. his time is comming near, it is starting to show. i now spend my free time petting and comforting him, because he too knows his time is near. i have already cried, and its time for a new lifeline. i need a bigger dog. but i also want a loyal dog. i was thinking an alaskan husky. or a german shepard, or a dalmation. but i dont want it so loyal as to it bite my friends or family if they go in for a hug, or a new girlfriend if i get one. i want a big dog by my side at all times. but i live in a modern hippy van, more on it later. but it cant get too big. i have to have a dog by me at all times, and, times are getting tougher. crime has risen in my area, so i also want a dog that i wont have to put in a cage to get him to sleep. i want one that is easy to poty train, and show who are friends. mostly i want a protective dog. but not a bulldog, i hear bad stuff about those on the news all the time. and it snows here, alot. and i want one that will fit in my van. i go road tripping, with my dog. if my dog cant go in, i wont go in. so, in recent years i made my 2004 chevrolet express van a modern hippy van. it has house carpet, a tv on the roof, a DVD player with it, a stash of black and white movies, a smaller bed, and a dog bed. soon to be replaced. connected to the wall, it has a dog food and water despencer custom made for my van. it has a custom passenger seat, idk how to describe it. but it is so that a dog can lie down and sleep or sit on it and look out the window. it has a small backrest, pretty awesome actually. in other words, my van is almost like a sleeper semi truck. alot of the times i just sleep in my van instead of paying for a motel. i drive, so it has to be calm in a car. it has to fit my personality. mysterious, quiet. i like traveling the country, i like seeing new places, i still yet have to go west of the mississippi, so i think i will do that with my current dog before he dies soon. i think he would like that. i can afford a dog, i almost live in my van though. and my house really isnt much bigger, it has a medium yard, small interior. i spend half my time there, and when im not there, i am on the road. i also want to trust him without a leash. i realize that in the puppy years, i will have to go with a leash, but if it must go a lifetime with a leash, its okay. all of my dogs protect me, they all have several times. protection is the #1 thing i must have. and it cant get way way too big.

Dog house and toys for a dog that chews everything? My dog is a year old alaskan malamute/weimeraner/springer spaniel mix (we did a dna test). He's 60 pounds of pure muscle and is an extremely active dog and we try to play fetch, chase me, tug etc every single day to help him with his hyper nature. However, during the day when we are at work he chews everything in sight (so we put him outside during the work day). We got him a heavy plastic dogloo and he has munched a huge chunk out of the entrance area of it. Likewise he has munched all the bungie cords off the shade we set-up for him and we can't put blankies in his dogloo because he shreds them. He digs and shreds plants etc. He likes the snow and cold weather (and gets hot very easily), but now that the weather is turning cooler I am starting to worry about keeping him warm. What kind of dog house can we get that he won't chew and what toys are safe to leave with him to play with when we aren't home so he won't get so bored? And how can we keep him warm (i'm allergic to cedar and pine chips). Thanks! the shade was actually up high, but he stood on his dog house and munched the bungies anyway. My dog doesn't properly chew rawhides and tries to swallow really big pieces so I cannot trust him to have those when alone.
Would you keep reading this book? Jake warmed his hands over the burning fire place. Melting snow pooled around him from his boots, his hat, and his coat. Water hissed on the stove top as it fell in droplets from his sleeves. He moved his hands reddened from the cold to his tingling cheeks. He rubbed his jaw gently and grimaced. It had been ages since he’d shaved. He shrugged out of his coat and draped it over a chair to dry. The clomping sounds of his boots echoed off the walls of the bare cabin as he made his way to the kitchen to retrieve a towel. Every movement cut through the silence like a loud eater in the theater. He wondered at it. No sound of traffic or barking dogs or sirens, there was an absence of even the sounds people were accustomed to tuning out. Only the occasional whistles of howling wind that slipped through the cracks of the upstairs window broke the quiet. Slowly he warmed and began the process of stripping down. He sat on an old green camp chair in the corner of the room and untied his boots and pulled his feet out of them. He sat back in the chair for a rest as though the small action had exhausted him. He threw his head back and rolled his neck before bending back to drag the zipper of his snow pants up his leg. He stood slowly, each movement deliberate and hung his pants neatly on the coat rack. Underneath he placed his boots on the cold tile floor. He was still for a moment as the wind squealed through the window crack. Not too much longer and he would be dead asleep in the cabin that sat on a hill near the river, under the stars, in the Alaskan wilderness. It was ten hours later when he finally opened his eyes. A quiet whimper from his bedside told him it was time to get up and get going. The morning darkness met his eyes. Even at nine in the morning it was still too dark to see his hand in front of him. It was as cold in the room as it was outside. Sleep had taken him with such vigor he hadn’t gotten up in the middle of the night as was customary to stoke the fire. Jake filled the fire place with wood. The white haired, blue eyed husky whined up at him as if to tell him to hurry. He stood up and brushed ash and wood chips from his hands as she danced circles around him on their way to the door. Smiling, his eyes lifted to the dark sky. This was not a misty city sky hazed by thick clouds from light and fog. It was not the kind of sky where you had to search for a star. This was a sparkling abyss that promised to go on forever; the diamond dotted mass that had inspired the myths and legends of the first humans. No matter how big this country seemed, he was always humbled standing underneath this sky and by the questions that the shimmering darkness begged. It remained dark for a time while he stared. He walked up the hill a little ways and sat backwards on his snow machine. The handle bars cradled his back and he crossed his ankles. He sat in the peaceful dark until the sun began to rise and the sky turned from a dark black to a dark turquoise blue. The promise of a clear, cold day shone on the horizon and hurled a shiver into the morning. Thanks everyone, I am picking up what you're throwing down, this IS only the very first page. But to the last comment, to say you don't care about Jake because he lives in the wilderness and that's not your world is like saying you don't care about Hester because she is a Puritan in the 17th century. Great literature doesn't usually relate to our lives because it's exactly like our lives. Great literature happens when you find humanity in the characters no matter what the location or the time setting.
German Shepherds and cold tolerance? Thanks all for replying in advance. I appreciate your help. So, my question is simple....I live in a cold place (Northern NH), and am the owner of several Alaskan Malamutes. A few months ago my family and I adopted a pure-bred GSD, and this is my first winter with the breed.... My Mals do spend the nights, all winter, outdoors. They have dog houses, and make snow dens when the heavy stuff comes in. They make a ton of noise when brought in, and while I realize some object to this, I would reply that the Mals were bred to live alongside alongside indigenous Alaskan natives. They are very happy to be outside....so, my question is this. How cold is too cold to have the GSD stay out there with them? Lately it has been getting into the teens at night, and I have been bringing her inside for the past several months. My limit has been anything below about 40 degrees to bring her in. The problem is that my wife does not like the dog in the house overnight, and I have been bringing the dog in despite this. So, am I being over protective? How cold is too cold for this breed? Thank you again...
Plz read this...REALLY EASY 10 POINTS??????: Part 1 :)? Ruby Hale got out of her father’s private jet and took her first breath of the bitterly cold Alaskan air. The whole way over from Darwin she had been in tears and rowing with him. She didn’t think it was fair that she had to move away from all her friends in Australia just because of his new job here in Alaska. “I know this is a big step, sweetie,” James, Ruby’s father, started as he wrapped his arm around his daughter, “But it’s for the best,” Ruby rolled her eyes as they walked slowly down the stainless steel steps. She loved her dad but he made her so angry sometimes. “Dad, getting loads of money that we already have isn’t for the best,” she snarled. After taking a one and a half hour taxi ride to their new home Ruby stood out the front, staring at the massive three story house she was expected to live in. Ok, she had to admit the indoor heated pool and outdoor tennis court was pretty cool but why did they need such a big house when it was only the two of them? “Nice, huh?” James smiled as he carted their bags in. Ruby shook her head, “If you get a mansion I get a dog!” James laughed, “Maybe.” Ruby finally made her way inside and checked out all the rooms. Every bedroom had pink wallpaper except her dad’s room and that was just plain white. “I’m not sleeping in a room with pink wallpaper it’s-“ “Stupid and girlie and looks like shit, yes, Ruby, I know,” James sighed. Ruby smiled, “We understand each other then?” James lugged some boxes into some of the rooms and pointed to the lounge sweet upstairs. “You can sleep on them for tonight until I get the painters in; wallpaper goes moldy in this sort of climate.” They ended up with pizza for dinner and Ruby fiddled around with the plasma TV until she worked it out. She watched ‘Two and a Half Men’ until she got sick of the American ads and then decided to call her best friend, Jamie. “Oh, my god, Ruby, guess what happened today?” Jamie started straight away before even saying hello. “What happened this time, did Christina and Danielle finally have a punch up?” Ruby asked excitedly. “Nope, Mark and Ben were at it!” She cried making a blowing noise into the phone. “They were apparently fighting over this new girl, Casey; she’s really pretty and nice too.” Ruby frowned; she’d missed a new girl and a fight by a day. “How is it possible I missed that?” The girls chatted away for a while until Jamie’s mum made her go to dinner. Ruby heard her voice getting teary. “I miss you already,” Jamie whimpered sniffing loudly. “I miss you too, tell everyone at school I said hi,” Ruby smiled sadly before pressing the end call button. James walked into the room with a slice of pizza in his hand. “You did this,” Ruby teased taking a bite out of it. He laughed then switched the TV back on. Ruby leaned over the lounge and kissed his forehead. “Night,” She said as she walked out of the room. She dragged her blankets and pillows into the other lounge room and snuggled up until she was warm enough to fall asleep. * * * * * Ruby woke early in the morning to the sound of a scratching noise on the door downstairs. Ruby slipped on her dressing gown and slippers then crept down the creaky wooden stairs. The scratching turned into soft growling sound you’d hear from a dog. She placed her ear on James’ door and could hear him snoring. Suddenly the growling got louder and more persistent and Ruby couldn’t fight her curious nature anymore. Slowly she opened the door and walking around outside was a brown dog. It looked agitated and nervous. “Here boy!” Ruby whispered. The dog quickly looked up. It stared at Ruby then bared back its teeth. Its ferocious bark was terrifying and bits of spit frothed at the mouth. Ruby quickly shut the door and watched out the window as the dog started eating the snow that gathered on the pavement. Its pupils were dilated and it seemed somewhat disorientated like a person on drugs. “Ruby?” James yawned as he stumbled sleepily out of his room, “What’s going on out there?” Ruby shrugged, “I think that dog’s got rabies,” James looked out the window and sighed. “Poor thing, it’ll have to get put down.” Suddenly a loud bang echoed through the street and the dog dropped down with blood growing around its stomach. A tall middle aged woman appeared with a gun in her hand. She stood carefully a long distance from the dead animal then pulled out her mobile phone. She spoke for a while then turned to the window Ruby and James were staring out. She did a wide circle around the dog then walked up to the door. She rang the door bell as James walked over to it and opened the door. The woman smiled and leaned her gun against the door frame as she flicked some snow out of her long blonde hair. see part 2 :)
REALLY easy 10 points? I am but a wolf, traveling through the Alaskan wilderness to evade capture. Footsteps echo in my ears haunting me as I run. Cold slabs of ice dig into my skin and flesh creating a sensation too terrible to describe. I have lost many things, but my nose remains my ever loyal servant, delivering to me the whereabouts of my predators and prey. Today, it tells me that the humans are far behind me and that a fat caribou is just ahead of me. My stomach grumbled with yearning. I had not eaten in days and days to come if I don’t make my move. I will have to kill the caribou. I sprinted across the open field of ice sending sparks of sleet flying behind me. As I reached my prey, I noticed that it was not alone. The Caribou was not alone. She had a calf. A small smile curved around the corner of my lips. I could now see the caribou, but she saw me too. She urged her calf to run while she sacrificed herself to stop me. I pounced at her. And missed. I pounced again and found myself facing her hooves. It struck me hard in the chest sending an unexpected jolt pain throughout my body. The agony of everything I have experienced in the past few days paled in comparison to the caribou’s blow, but I was brave. I stood back onto my feet and pounced again, grabbing a mouthful of flesh in my jaws. Warm blood crept into my mouth and I pulled. A large piece of meat tore from the caribou’s torso. She let out a scream of fury and lunged thrashing her hooves like a lethal weapon. I backed away and watched her powerful hoof plunge into the snow. Blood dripped down her back while her eyes reflected death. I circled her slowly, waiting for the right time to attack when something darted passed me. A bullet. It sent a wave of fear down my spine for it could only mean one thing. The humans have caught up. I was forced to abandon my prey and run. I ran like I never ran before. I ignored everything: the caribou, my hunger and the after affect of the caribou’s blow. My stomach twitched in hunger; my mind struggling from fear as another bullet darted towards me, this time sinking into my fur. I let out a yelp of pain and fell onto the icy ground. I could hear the screeching of vultures from miles away, I could hear the dogs bark with joy, I could hear the humans cheering in triumph, and I could hear the last words said by a dying wolf. “A wolf’s life is not easy.” Tell me if its good, and if its not good tell me why.
how to help my dog...please read for more info? My dog got loose during a storm on February 14th. I did all I could think of to find her. We had three weeks of BAD blizzards one right after another. during this time the average Temperature was 40 below zero and the average wind speed was 40-50 mph with frequent gusts approaching up to 90 mph. I gave up finding her and thought she probably was dead. But miracles happening!!! On friday the dog catcher had a report that some people though that there might be a dog living under a building in the airport. He set a humane trap and caught her and returned her to me.The building she was under was a storage shed enclosed by a fence. She somehow got in but was unable to get back out. So she was trapped for over a month without any food or water. There was snow but we are not sure what she had been eating. The dog catcher looked her over and said that she actually looked pretty good for what she had been through. Since she has been back she has done nothing but sleep. She has not eaten or drunken anything, even when i try to feed her by hand. I have taken her out to relieve herself and she hasn,t yet. I live in an Alaskan village and do not have access to a vet without flying her out. Any ideas on how to get her to eat and drink? what would be good foods for her to be eating? PS

What kind of Husky is this? This is my dog Chucky. We bought him from a backyard breeder 1.5yrs ago (we knew he was coming from a puppy mill as soon as we pulled up, but hey he was too cute to pass up, and no matter what the circumstance every dog needs some loving!) We were told that he was a Siberian husky, but lately have had people come up to us and say we have a beautiful Malamute. Which I refuse to believe because he is no way in any shape or form a worker! Running to him is like a gallop in the park, we do "urban dog sledding" with a bike in the summer and he doesn't even pull and in the winter would rather hide in the snow then pull something around unlike my female who you can see she's a puller with both legs working in unison. Just wondering what your opinions are if you think he's a siberian or a malamute or an alaskan...that and he has a fox/wolf like tail, it doesn't curl all the way over his back and is very fluffy and it has a small triangle patch of differant texture on it (you can kinda see it in the picture if you look closely where his tail changes to a differant color you can see it dark again.) Also wondering why there's such a color differance and texture to his tail Whatever the case I love him the way he is, and I relise that he can be mixed with anything do to the fact he came from a mill...but if you had to choose between one breed or the other which one would you say he looked more like?Or if you think he was a mixture Curious to know what other people think :) Thanks http://s629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/rebe_salsa/?action=view¤t=HPIM1344.jpg
Help me name my female siberian husky!? I know there are pages and pages for this exact question but my intents are a little different. I'd like an authentic name ie Russian/ Alaskan along those lines. She's a typical siberian husky- black and white. Her name could simply be a russian word for snow or something. Please, PLEASE don't suggest snowflake, ice, or any words referencing blue. Also if possible post some type of enunciation for the names(those that aren't obvious how to pronounce) I don't like generic names and I'd like her to be something special as she's filling the hole my dog Cosmo left when he died last year. I'd prefer names or words in Russian/Ukranian/Alaskan
New Dog names? We recently lost our long haired Border collie Ben, he was hit by a car and subsiquently had to put down yesterday (18th) and we all knew that it would probably go that way. We have decided that we will get pup's. Firstly Ben brought so much to us and we are heartbroken that it ended thus and he will never be forgotten or replaced. We are definatly getting collie's again (we have already decided on one,a long haired again and maybe a merle) but we want a unique name. It must be a quick sharp name and NOT a current human name. we want a name thats similar to old english, think welsh/anglo-saxon/celtic/Finish/alaskan and should have a meaning. e.g. Eiros (bright, celtic) Iago (god's gift, celtic) Vala (chosen, celtic) also think of words like, sword, snow, storm, warrior, night, free, brave. So Im after a name thats unique and has meaning Thanks Phoenix. oh and for those who care. Ben, http://www.opendiary.com/entryview.asp?authorcode=D761793&entry=10032&mode= firstly thank you for the kind regards, thank you for your replys. but im not after names like :- storm stallion swayer longhorn snout pointer[most collies have long noses] belshon im after names like :-ANEIRIN m Welsh Welsh name, originally spelled Neirin, which possibly means "noble". ANWEN f Welsh Means "very beautiful" in Welsh. BERWYN m Welsh Means "white head" from the Welsh elements barr "head" and wyn "white". BRAITH f & m Welsh Means "speckled" in Welsh. BRONWEN f Welsh Derived from the Welsh elements bron "breast" and gwen "white, fair, blessed". (thanks) i want the welsh/anglo-saxon/celtic/Finish/alaskan/irish etc for sword, shaddow, white beard etc Moc:irish names are fine, as long as its shortish, easy to say abd has a translation i dont mind the language
Is ALL of Alaska in favor or slaughtering wolves even babies? Do all feel as Palin does about wolves? They mate for life? Mother to Mother..how can you allow them to kill 14 innocent babies..14 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! For $150.00 a left paw. Do all Alaskans love to kill for what they call sport, Ariel gunning and running wolves to exhaustion on snow mobiles? And killing and exhausted animal with in a few feet. That's a sport? Sounds like murder to me. http://www.flickr.com/photos/29035692@N03/3474136935/in/set-72157617072298968/ My wolf dog who is the best protector and companion for my neices.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/29035692@N03/3539948604/ Thx Cap...still hate it. What breed of sled dog is this? I spoke briefly with a man about his dog he was walking and forgot the breed. Here's what I remember, if you know of a breed that fit the following please share! Sled dog, often leads the pack because "it has the ability to sense open water when on ice" Medium sized dog - this female as 40-48 pounds, I would say no taller than 4 feet. "Has dotted pupils to prevent blindness from the reflection of light off the snow" "Doesn't bark" -I assume this is just something it doesn't do, but something it is capable of doing. This particular dog was full white with blue eyes (not albino). I mean full white, absolutely no other color. The hair was short, and not shaven. It reminded me of hair you'd see on a lab. He said something about Eskimos breeding them, and I thought he mentioned something about a wolf. I know it's NOT: A Siberian husky or Alaskan malamute It could very well have been a cross-breed. I wish I could remember what he said, she was such a beautiful dog! I actually didn't see the dog at any races. We were on vacation in St. Ignace, MI. Saw him walking her outside a grocery store.
HELP! 10 points BEST ANSWER!!? How does the setting of a story(cold icy alaskan) affect its main character(a man training his snow dogs for a race that gets wounded when he falls in an ice gully)??? and how do characters affect plot? THANK YOU!!
