What is it like to sled dog race? I have to write an essay on sled dog racing for school, and I don't know very much about it. I've written about the positions of the dogs, etc. but I was wondering, what is it like to sled dog race? like what do you feel while you're racing? How do the dogs feel/react? also, if there's anything else important you think I should add in my essay about sled dog racing please write that too. Thank you, help would be much appreciated :)
anyone know of where the sled dog race is in CO? also does anyone know of a web site that list sled dog races in the intire USA because as soon as i get my motor home fixed up i would like to travel and vist sled dog races. http://psdnakita.tripod.com
What is Alaska like in spring? Can i have any extra information on sled dog racing? I am currently trying to write a book about Alaskan sled dog racing. I need to know the temperatures of Alaska for every season. If anyone has any additional information on sled dog racing, the Iditarod, or rules of the race, please let me know! I dont really have any idea of alaskan sled dog racing and thats how it is intended to be in the book. It will be in first person so I, not being Alaskan, would not know very much on the subject. Hence i am researching it.
Movie with kids, a dog, and a sled dog race...? (Looking for the title)? I watched a movie at school about ten years ago or so, and I kinda want to see it again but I have no idea what it was called! This is what I remember about it: It was about two(?) kids who wanted to win some sort of sled dog race (I can't remember why), so they trained their old white(?) dog to run it. At the end of the race, shortly before the finish line, the dog died of a heart attack or something. The kids ended up carrying the deceased dog the rest of the way across the finish line. That's about all I can remember. Any help would be appreciated! =) IT WASN'T 8 BELOW OR SLED DOGS. It was ONE DOG, NOT a whole team. And the sled master(s) were CHILDREN.
Can a mutt compete or any other type of dog in an Alaskan race ? Instead of a quincenera, next year, I'm having a sled dog race. My parents agreed to take me to Alaska to compete. I have a German Husky, a Pointer Mix, a Wolf Husky mix, and 4 German pointers. Are they elegible to compete ? Thanks Nikki your answer was great as well as animal @s.
Whats the name of this movie about a boy and a dog sled race? I was flipping around the channels 'till I started to watch a good movie. I have no clue whats it called. This is the part of the movie I only got to see... Well, this boy about age of 12 or 11 was racing the bad guy with dog sleds in a snowy place. But when the boy was almost to the finish line, he fell down because he was too cold and the bad guy was right behind him. But the cheering crowd fell silent and began to whistle some tune. And when the bad guy was right beside the boy, the young boy got up buy the spirit of the crowds whistling and barley won the dog sled race. That was the only part I saw. Thank you Charlie, It is Iron Will! :D
How do you feel about the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race? The 37th annual Iditarod Dog Race has begun. Its well over 1,000 miles and goes from Anchorage to Nome Alaska. How do you feel about this race? I thinks its a great race that shows how much the mushers and dogs must rely on each other not only to win the race but also survive the race...traveling through the night over frozen lakes, ponds and rivers...i would love to go and watch loki - your right i guess the races today are not as "harsh for a lack of a better term" on the dogs or the mushers b/c of all the care they receive at each stop...but when the race just begun 37 years ago i'm sure the dogs and mushers had to rely on each other to survive b/c the care was not as great as it is today...great answer i thought some of the people would actually think its cruelty to animals and be totally against it...i'm sure my lab would love to try it
Will a one year old Havanese dog survive if it becomes part of a sled dog team in Alaska this March? I was invited to the Iditarod in Alaska this March with a friend, but I don't think that I am eligible to compete in this race myself, and this race lasts about ten days. So, in my time spent waiting for the racers to show up to finish in Nome, I want to do some sled dog racing of my own. I don't have a dog of my own, but the neighbor girl has a Havanese, and I know that she would let me use it. Her Havanese has short, stubby legs, and it has a lot of hair in its eyes. I would assume that since the limbs are short, this dog would most likey have good circulation compared to a dog with long limbs. Also, the hair would keep the snow out of its eyes. I would like to make the Havanese the first member of my sledding team if it won't excessively endanger its life.
Is the iditarod dog sled race Animal cruelty? I have heard of cases when the dogs are racing they some time fall through the ice musher and all and the climb out but don't the husky/malamute dogs risk exposure from being wet........ And it is not uncommon for the musher to get stranded with the dogs in a sever blizzard storm ....does that not put the dogs at risk to the extremes.......And do they over run the dogs ....I HOPE I AM WRONG THANKS ..............Rab
the idatarod dog sled race route plz? how many miles is the idatarod race?? and where does it start and where does it end in?? i already looked in wikipedia, but it's kinda confusing for me :)
What is your opinion of the dog sled racing? Do you think is should be banned? Do you think it should be televised? Do you think it is cruel to the dogs involved ? I love it myself! I think it should be televised; sorry so many of you misunderstood. I saw an a story about someone complaining about the it being cruel to the dogs, I am husky mix myself, my mom takes me running everyday twice a day or more and I love the snow. I think it should be an Olympic sport. I misrepresented my question. Sorry
Sled dog racing question! thnks!? So i'm getting into sled dog racing! I am getting 2 dogs for 1 sled (i only weigh 106) i will have a lead dog don't worry. but anyways just wondering if there's any good websites you can give me on sled dogs and sled dog racing?! I'm also looking for a sponsor are there any websites (probably not) or should i contact someone and ask them? Also I will have a professional work with me on racing them! so don't worry about me not knowing what i'm doing! (i don't but i WILL) Also when buying a siberian husky (i've found 2 i LOVE) what should i look for? I've bought a dog before (she died) but i wasn't really racing her (she was a papillon! haha) so what should i look for? should i ask to walk them to see if they pull? how can i tell if i'm getting my money's worth? any good websites with good equiptment that isn't too expensive (i found a sled and some other stuff the sled as about $250 and the other stuff total was about $65) that's good quality! any tips would be great to! no bad comments like "you aren't ready for this' as you don't KNOW me or "don't race them dogs are not meant to be raced" Um have you SEEN a siberian husky?! they are HYPER!!!!! :) thanks for your help! and sorry about all the questions just making sure i am covering all areas! thanks again!
what is the best sled dog for racing? I would also like to know where to buy these top quality racing dogs dogs. And could somebody tell me what breeds make up a alaskan husky. And lastly I want to know what dog is the strongest for pulling weights
Is it beneficial to train a sled dog by having him pull someone who is wearing skis instead of using the sled? I would like to start training my neighbor's Havanese for dog sledding (just like the Iditarod!...almost). As I am somewhat addicted to skiing, I have plenty of skiing gear around, but as I am new to the dog sledding hobby, I haven't got a sled yet. I do, however, know that severl dog sledding races have already been cancelled this year due to lack of sufficient snow cover in some areas. This means that I have until next winter to find a dog sled anyways; they'll probably go on sale over the summer, eh? Would it be beneficial to start training the dog this winter by having him pull me around while I wear a pair of skis? Any other suggestions for training a sled dog for racing sans sled would be appreciated. Also, any suggestions regarding a technique for training cats for my sledding team would be appreciated as well. I know I'm not a "cat person;" I have tried training a cat by having it pull me while I wore my skis, but it just ran away... Ach, I mean "several" as opposed to "severl." I don't like that when I make such mistakes in details...my apologies!
sled dog racing help please? okay i am thirteen i think it would be really really really cooool to be in sled dog racingg how young to people usually start training for races like the iditarod ? what should i do to practice ? i moved to texas from michigann[im used to the cold] haha so anyone have any tips or any advice i know it seems kinda far away but i can dream cant i ?

I have absolutely no experience but I am MESMERIZED bythe strength and ability of these dogs when they are at the front of a sled and the talent of the mushers as they race. I would love to be part of this one day !
How do entrants and their dogs train for the Iditarod race? I'm doing an essay on the Iditarod Dog Sled race. I need to know how the entrants train and how they raise and train their dogs for the race. I've looked on the internet and I haven't had that much luck finding this kind of information.

Dog Sled Racing, Yay or Neh? What do YOU think about dog sled racing? Do you think it's animal abuse, fun, good, what?? Please give detail, like why and how. Thanks!
GETTING INVOLVED IN DOG SLED RACING? How does someone become involved in dog sled racing in Canada? What step does a person have to take? How do you train with the dogs? What training steps are to be taken? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Loki ❆ Wolfchild Thank you I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much dewclaw I am sure your advise will help us in this process. Harlee be a Sled dog - Thanks for the advise I will try my best to find local dogsledders and a mentor. I am speaking to one at this moment.
Is dog sledding or racing abusive to the animals? Is dog racing or dog sledding an animal rites issue? I heard a little on bth sides of the argument, but I'm still unsure if its cruel to the dogs. What are your thought , good or bad. Knowitall & animal expert, arent pitbulls bred to fight? Isnt that there "job" ? I hate pit fighting, but one can make that argument.
When seriously running a sled dog (malamute), how often do I stop to let him drink? Not sled dog racing, but bike-joring... we go about 10-12mph for about 8 or 10 miles in about 45 mins or so usually.. and he doesnt drink during this time. But he gulps water down when we get home.... should I be stopping half way to let him drink..... or could it lead to problems like bloat? FYI, we run in COLD weather.. theres 13 inches of snow on the ground and its 15 degrees out right now...so he's not in a warm climate. Anyone run dogs? thanks for the article Chris- dunno why people thumbs-down you. From reading it, it sounds like my best bet is to water him a good while before we run. Hoped you'd answer Loki, as a person who knows the sled dogs, I value your opinion more than others on here. Thanks.
How Do I Get My Alaskan Malamute Into Sled Racing ? I Have A 6 Month Old Alasakan Malamute B itch ... I Know She Shouldnt Be Used To Pull Until At Least 18 Months Old ... But Does Anyone Know How I Could Get Her Properly Trained To Be A Sled Racing Dog ???
Are mixed breed sled dogs the same as designer dogs? This question is for those who hate the creation of "designer dogs." Most racing sled dogs are not siberian huskies but are carefully bred mix breeds. This includes alaskan huskies. The current trend is dogs with a lot of pointer in the mix. These mix breed sled dogs are bred from the best performers in a musher's kennel and are bred for a purpose, winning races. Do you think of them in the same way you think of "designer dogs?"
Alaska has nothing in common with Kansas. Kansas has no caribou, eating raw seal meat, or sled-dog racing,...? What makes republicans think Palin's arctic wilderness ideology remotely resembles anything like conservatism in the heartland? Her husband Todd Palin was a registered Alaskan Independence Party member from 1995 to 2002 when she was mayor from 1996 to 2002. The Alaskan Independence Party advocates that Alaska break away from America, like the confederate states during the Civil War, to form its own soverign nation, using violence if necessary. AIP party members have said that the only reason she was a registered republican and not a registered AIP member was so that she could run for mayor. She and her husband have attended their conventions in years past, and she even addressed their convention earlier this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvPNXYrIyI Their founder Joe Vogler has said "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government...and I won't be buried under their damn flag!" He has also said "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
Name of movie where sled dog dies at end.? I'm trying to figure out the name of a movie. All I can remember is that a young boy is racing his sled dog and at the end his dog dies of a heart attack from pushing himself too hard. The boy's main rival, an Indian I believe, won't let anybody else finish and lets the boy carry his dead dog across the finish line to win the race. Anybody know the name of this movie? Thanks
dog sledding questions please help? The logistics of sled-dog racing (How are the dogs trained? What kind of lives do they have when they’re not racing? Why are Alaskan huskies so well adapted for this type of life?) The origins of the Iditarod race The Alpirod (How does it compare to the Iditarod?) The history of mushing as a sport (When did it first start? Why?) Who won this race? Can you write the Anwsers in one paragraph Thanks very much
I want to get into dog racing- what should I do? Currently I only have eight dogs but one is expecting puppies and I am very excited by this. I am hoping for a litter of at least ten as this is the number required to participate in dog sled racing. I have read every Jack London novel in preparation and have constructed my own sled from timber I borrowed from the construction site across the road during the night. I have devised a plan which I feel will ensure me taking first place in the next national dog sled championships. For the first year of the puppies life I intend to say the word mush then chase them violently around the apartment while yelling and hitting saucepan lids together. I have estimated that the soundproofing of my apartment should block out at least sixty percent of the noise and the dogs will learn to associate the word mush with great fear so when I yell it on race day, the panic and released adrenaline will spur them on to being winners. I am so confident of this being a foolproof plan that I intend to sell all my furniture the day before the race and bet the proceeds on coming first place.

What dog shows and races can I go to? I was wondering what dog shows and races [sled pulling/long distance, etc] are available for attending in upstate NY? I'm saving up all my money to go to the Iditarod when I get the chance; but since that's all the way up in Alaska, I know I can't go every year like I'd love to. So I was wondering what dog shows and/or Mushing Races are around the North-East. Any and all ideas are fantastic. Links are appreciated as well. Cheers.

DOG BREED QUIZ....A BIT HARDER THIS TIME! (Did You Know Facts) ? 1- •This breed has been assigned the Herding Group designation. •In 1979, this breed was named the state dog of Louisiana. •This breed has been recorded in the Foundation Stock Service since 1996. •This breed has been taken to Venezuela to gather wild Brahman cattle on huge ranches. •In Canada, this breed has competed successfully in sled dog racing. #2- •The foremost use of this breed in the United States is for the hunting of rabbits. •In trailing ability, the accuracy of this breed's nose makes him second only to the Bloodhound. •In 1935, this breed's Club Of America was organized in the United States. •The February 27, 1928 issue of Time magazine carried the picture of a puppy of this breed on the cover. The accompanying cover story was a write-up of the 52nd annual dog show of the Westminster Kennel Club at Madison Square Garden as if it were attended and observed by the puppy. •In the US, it was thought that George Washington owned dogs of this breed presented to him as a gift by Lafayette after the American Revolution. #3- •This breed was developed in Africa for hunting. •In 1943, the AKC accepted this breed for registration in the Stud Book and approved the standard. •This breed does not bark but does make yodeling noises. This breed is also known as the "barkless dog". •The first specimens of this breed were brought from the source of the Nile as presents to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. •This breed is a dog with fastidious, dainty habits, such as cleaning himself all over as does a cat; this breed also lacks a doggy odor, contributing to his assets as a house dog. •This breed is also known for being quite independent and aloof at times. It is alert and careful with strangers, open and calm with friends, and loving and solicitous with children. When meeting strangers, this breed prefers to make the first overtures and should not be approached from behind. #4- •This breed is AKC’s 155th breed. •At the April 2006 Board Meeting this breed became eligible for AKC registration on September 1, 2006 and was eligible to compete in the Working Group at shows held on and after January 1, 2007. There will be an open registry for the breed until August 31, 2009. •At the August 2004 Board Meeting this breed was approved to compete in the Miscellaneous Class this became effective January 1, 2005. •In December 2003 the AKC Board approved the eligibility of some Foundation Stock breeds, which meet certain criteria, for competition in AKC Companion Events (Obedience, Tracking, and Agility), effective January 1, 2004. The breeds must have a minimum of 150 dogs with three generation pedigrees recorded in the FSS®, a national breed club with members in at least 20 states, and an AKC approved breed standard. This breed was one of 20 breeds who met the requirements. Requests by breed clubs to have their breeds compete in the various Performance Events would be considered on a case-by-case basis. •This breed was recorded in the AKC Foundation Stock Service in 1996. •This breed doesn't shed - they blow their coat once a year. •The bitches have a single oestrus per year, generally in the late fall and that most of this breed's puppies are born in December and January. •Tibetans believe that this breed have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated into people or into Shambhala (the heavenly realm). •In Tibet, this breed is called "Do-khyi" or "tied dog" and are kept chained to the gates and let loose at night. •In Tibet, this breed is traditionally kept with Lhasa Apsos, who alert them to the appearance of any stranger. •Did you know that this breed has exceptionally strong jaws and teeth, and this, combined with remarkably high intelligence (that lends to boredom) and their legendary fondness for wood, can result in amazingly destructive acts to your house? #5- •This is a native American breed. •This breed is the result of a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier, later considerably inbred. •The AKC admitted the this breed in 1893. •Much of the progress in this breed's breeding program has been made in the 20th century; it is a relatively new breed. •The original sire and dam of this breed were named "Judge" and "Gyp". I will score you when you have your 5 guesses written down. :) Fur and Fiction- 5/5! Well done! I think I need to make these harder... Hollie- 5/5 dixiecup246- 5/5 Chuckles- 5/5
Does anyone in Minnesota want, or know of someone that would want an alaskan husky puppy? Over my last spring break I visited some friends that had recently had a litter of pure bread Alaskan Huskies that they could not care for. Unfortunately i can not keep him. I know that these kinds of dogs love running and they love the outdoors. I know that huskies typically run dog sled races. I know he would make an excellent dog and even an excellent dog sledding dog. This is a lifestyle I know he would prefer. Dog sledding is in his blood, his grandfather ran the Iditarod. He is an extremely smart puppy and he learns very fast. With only being 8 weeks old he already comes to his name, sits and is for the most part potty trained. If you know of anyone looking for an Alaskan husky puppy that could efficiently care for him or maybe would like to train him to become a dog sledding dog please let me know. All I want is a good home for him.

Has anybody ever heard of Rachael Scdoris? Rachael Scdoris? She has ran the Iditarod sled dog race this year, is from my town, (and my hometown!) Bend, Oregon, and I get to go sled dog riding tomorrow with her dogs! Has anybody heard of her? Thanks for everybody who is telling me to have fun! I will..
Does anyone know the name of this book? I read it in grade 5 I think. There is a dog sled race between a kid and an older guy. And the dog gets hurt. It is in Alaska. There was a saying to the book to. I cant remember it. If anyone could remember it. Please help. The Saying is If there is a will there is a way.
Sled Dogs and Races? I need information on seld dogs and races by the 11th for a report. All I want is WEBSITES!!! I'm not gonna cheat. So if you can help, THANK YOU!!! :) NOTHING ON WHO WON THE RACE!!! thanx.
What is a good arrangement for the members of a sled racing team? I plan to be riding on the sled of course, but I don't know how to arrange the dog and cats. Would it be best to place the cats in front of the dog so that the dog chases the cats or arrange it with the dog in front to be a good leader while the cats follow it? The former would provide more motivation, right? I should clarify that this sort of sledding is like the sort used in the Iditarod.
Dog Scootering.? Has anyone heard of the 'sport' and if you have what are your thoughts? Those of you who haven't here is a link to get a brief idea from. Anyone who trains/races sled dogs I would really appreciate your thoughts in particular. http://www.dogscooter.com/HowToTrainScooter.htm Apparently you've never seen working sled dogs. Most of the ones that I've seen, met or hitched a ride with thought they were in trouble if they WEREN'T pulling. Quit being ignorant please. For the Akita, they actually use two styles of this, one is sled-dog style with the dogs in front, and the other places the dog next to the rear wheel with a harness and turns the scooter into rear wheel drive. I'll find the link. Here is the 'rear-wheel' drive link: http://www.dogpoweredscooter.com/
Sled Dog Job - Information Wanted ? Is there a type of job where you have to test the dogs out and see if they can run properly. If so what is the job called. I don't want to be a Musher and actually race with them
What jobs are there to do with Sled Dogs? I want to go to somewhere snowy and work with sled dogs. I know there is a Sled Dog Handler and a Musher, but i would prefer not to actually race them. I would love to ride with them, but not as a racer. And information Thanks
Need a name of a movie? I'm preaty sure it was a disney movie. With a kid in a big sled dog race to save his familys home back in the early 1900's
Cat-Sled Races--How Many Cats Do I Need? If the dogs went on strike and they had cat-sled races, how many cats would I need to pull the sled and all the supplies? Do you think cats could do the job? Would they keep the racers warm at night, like the dogs do?
hey want some Help....!? can u please tell me about the iditarod trail sled dog race. if you know about it please....because i have a test about it but i don't know many information about it....
I have a question!? What is the name of the famous sled dog race currently being run in Alaska?
What would happen if one driving a very powerful car at near top speeds shifted to 1st gear swiftly...? and continued to engage the throttle completely. Would the tires be able to turn fast enough to add any speed to the already quick moving car or would the already high rotational velocity exceed that of the max rotational 1st gear velocity the engine could generate at this gear ratio? I suppose what I am picturing is something akin to an iditarod dog sled race situation. If one took a very powerful, but slow sled dog and added him to a group of less powerful but extremely fast dogs, wouldn't the team actually be slowed down by the very powerful dog? Would the action of downshifting despite driving at an enormous velocity and continuing to engage the throttle all the way do any damage to the car? Thanks a lot.
story problems? I need help with some math story problems. Please show work as to how you got the answer. Or just the formula to get the answer. Do any or all problems you can do!!! Problem 1: The Iditarod sled-dog race extends for 1049 miles from Anchorage to Nome. If a musher is twice as far from Anchorage as from Nome, how many miles has the musher travelled? Problem 2:George and Joan do volunteer work. Joan worked 3 more hours than George. Together they worked more than 27 hours. What possible numbers of hours did each work? Problem 3: One number is 25% of another. The larger number is 12 more than the smaller. What are the two numbers? Thanksssssss!!!!
I am trying to write a story about the annual Yukon Quest but I need some story ideas. please help me.? Whats that movie? This was a movie about a dog sled race. The main character is kind of the underdog but he has some special fruitcake or something. There is also a reporter following the main character's journey and he rides a lot of trains. I thought it may have been Ethan Hawk.
Do I need some sort of permit or such for rescuing stray cats off of the street for my snow sledding team? I know that most people use dogs for sledding races such as the Iditarod, but I was wondering if it's illegal in most places to sneak a few stray cats off of the street to use in place of dogs for my sledding team. The only dog I would plan to have on my team is a Havanese I could borrow from the neighbor girl; every sledding team needs a good leader. The dog could be in charge of all of the cats, but will I get in trouble if someone sees me taking cats off the street? There always is a chance that the cat does in fact belong to someone; so, wouldn't people be concerned about someone who is taking stray cats and maybe accidentally their house cat? ...perhaps concerned enough to create a law against it? I would like the general laws regarding snatching cats off of the street because I want to have cats from various places so as to have a culturally diverse sled racing team.
Has anyone else heard about this? I recently got a email saying that congress is trying to pass the Bill O'Riely law. Since he is the self-appointed guardian of this countries children, The law is named after him. This law would label ANY online pic of a person under 18 as child porn. It would not matter if they are a 7yo girl in a swimsuit laying at the beach, or a 17 yo boy in a parka in a dog-sled race. This law is suppose to protect this countries children from online perverts. Are we suppose to stop posting family pics? If this law passes, you could go to prison for sending a pic of your new baby to your parents. Has anyone else heard about this?
I started a story but cant finish it can you help me please? This is all I got can you help me get some more ideas in their so I can get a page (double-spaced)? thank you.... and please dont plagerise you can go to jail pplz so here it is: Alaska My cousin Natalie and I spent our winter in Alaska . We usually stayed inside, and when it was light we were outside. We trained and ran dogs for sled teams for the Iditarod race. My most prized possession was my dog, Bree. Bree was sweet not to mention innocent, not exactly a sled dog. Bree was like Jenna in Balto, and Nana from Snow Dogs. She was wanting to be a lead dog but she was a Akita and a Collie mixed. Not the prettiest dog, but Bree was pretty to me. Natalie and my dogs, were named from lead dog to wheel dogs, are lead: Max, 1st team dog: Jake, 2nd: Bear, 3rd:, 4th: Bon, 5th: Yukon, 6th: Bailey, & the last two dogs are wheel dogs are Murphy and Scarlett-Satin.
