Greyhound Dog Races Knowledge Base
Dog lovers, I bet greyhound breeders are more guilty of animal cruelty than dog fighters? You know greyhound racing is a somewhat popular sport and you know greyhound dog breeders do it for the money so they select the ones to keep and what do you think they do with the ones that don't measure up. And worse, what do you think they do to the campions that win all the dog races after that dog gets older? I like animals but I really wonder if a dog is worth a man's life? greyhound mummy I did not mean the post to be offensive but it is in fact true. I lived in an area that greyhound racing was popular and there was an investigative tv news show on this topic and it is true that greyhound breeders do it for business reasons and it true they kill their dogs generally speaking when the dogs are no longer useful. Just by using your imagination you know it is true because they must go through many many litters a year and many dogs trained to be runners and a few champions and on with the next cycle and they do kill their dogs. I am sorry if this offends you but that doesn't make it any less true ok!
Is this just an urban legend about dog races or is it true? I'm getting ready to go to my first Greyhound race. A friend of mine told me that when betting on greyhounds at the races, look for the dog that takes a bowel movement just before the race. This dog will be the likely winner. (Unless more than one dog does this, I assume) This just sounds like BS to me(Or shoulc I say DS). But, says lots of people know this and it works. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

What happens between a greyhound's puppy hood to a maiden race? What does the dog go through? I was told by a friend when I asked a parent to take me to a greyhound race that the practices of greyhound racing was very cruel. I looked it up, and it seems that this is true. Now, I have two questions. 1) It seems very vague about what happens before a dog's first race. What kind of training does the dog go through? Is it cruel training? 2) Is greyhound racing itself cruel in your opinion. Thank you for any information you can provide me.

How do you feel about Greyhound Races? I adopted a "retired" Greyhound and has been the Greatest Dog I ever had... And, I had many of them. He was like a cat, hugging me with his whole body. So protective of me and so very Loving! Why then Can't We Have them as pets and not for racing?
What is the difference between horse racing, dog racing, deer hunting and ....Micheal Vick's case? Ok...I have anaylized Mike Vick's case and other animal sporting events. Government sanctioned animal sports have been in place for decades and the animal rights people have had been quiet until now. First horse racing. These animals are injected with steriods and overburdened to win races. There is money bet on their outcome. If they seriously break a leg, then they are put to sleep. Next is dog racing...Greyhounds...Big money is wagered on their outcome. These animals are bred for racing. They are injected with dangerous steriods. If they lose their competitive edge or get injured, then they are thrown to a shitty kennel and are forgotten. Some are even put to sleep. Finally....Deer Hunting...This sport pisses me off. How can some Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia or West Virginia red neck go and blow defenseless bambi's brains out and get to hang the head on the wall? They seldom eat the animal. Where are the animal rights activists for this?
Greyhound owners: are you against dog racing? In Massachusetts there is a Ballot Question (3) that seeks to ban dog racing in this state by 2010. If you are a greyhound owner, I am curious if you are pro-racing, anti-racing or neutral? Please also state why. Thanks in advance.

Who are the best racing dog rescue groups AND greyhound racers in the Sarasota area? I'm writing an article for my college's newspaper about greyhound racing in Sarasota (the Sarasota Kennel Club and its track are here). Of course, the article is inherently going to be kind of sad and will, to many people, make greyhound racing look "bad," but I understand that I need to get information from both sides of the issue. I would like to talk to someone involved in greyhound racing as well as someone involved in greyhound rescue. Which are the best organizations for these two topics? And if possible, who are the best people to talk to? And would I be allowed to take pictures? I wanted to ask beforehand because if I called up, told them who I was, and did anything wrong, it would make my school look bad. I just need to get to know my subjects before I contact them, or else I might offend or piss them off. Thanks in advance!
Which dog would you suggest greyhound or terrier cross? I am rehoming a dog from the dogs trust but cant decide which dog to get my husband has fallen in love with a ex racing greyhound, while I have fallen for a cross breed terrier. Unfortunately getting both is not an option. They are so different and dont laugh but I feel guilty that I have to choose to start with. I am a huge dog lover and feel for the dog we dont choose. Any advise
Greyhound races...Yes or NO? I was watching the news today and they were talking about this lady who rescues greyhounds who have been left in the street to die. Some of these greyhounds were so skinny you could see there ribs.It was so sad. They were all race dogs who were either to old or injured and could not race. Now while I understand that not everyone is that cruel these dogs do get hurt while racing. Some end up with broken bones one dog even died at the finish line.So do you think that these rces should go on.I know that dogs love to run but this is extreme.Who agrees and disagrees and why
What is the average speed for a female racing greyhound? I have a Female greyhound around 1yr. old (not bred to be a race dog but a hunting dog) and she runs 50mph. we have clocked her going that fast. Is this below, average, or above a racing greyhounds speed? my greyhound is about 1yo. and she runs about 50 mph. and we have seen her do this while chasing a deer for 3/4 of a mile. She was litterly 8ft. behind the deer!
greyhound betting help? Any help on betting on greyhound dog races? this is my first time going to a dog track and i was wondering if theres any help ya'll can give me. greyhound park in memphis
What is Horse breeding? What is Dog Breeding? Why can't these same principles apply to Humans? If you want a fast horse your breed a thoroughbred, if you want a work horse you breed a belgian or a quarter horse, etc... If you want a hunting dog you get a pointer, if you want a sheperd you get a collie, if you want a racing dog you get a greyhound, fighting dog pitbull, guard dog german sheparp or rottie etc... Even though the different breeds CAN do what the other breeds do they will not be as effective at it. So why can these same principles apply to humans? Are fair people more intelligent than non whites? are darker skin people more athletic/powerful than whites? Who is smarter a border collie or a rotweiller? Who is more powerful the collie or the to rottie? Before you start bashing me, I"m in an hispanic male. So I'm a mix of everything..lol What do you think, seriously? Is it possible that some races are superior at some things than others? After all we are part of the animal kingdom are we not?
How often does a Favourite greyhound win a race? if you where to go to a greyhound race and bet only on the favourites how often would you expect the dog to win? Is there a statisic simular to that of horses in wich the favourite wins a third of races.
In what states is Greyhound racing legal? I'm doing a big project for school, and I've been really trying to find what states dog racing is legal in, but I haven't been able to! And if you say stuff that is completely a lie, then I'll know because I'm an expert on this subject, I just don't know this. Anyway, the first person who can answer the best 10 POINTS!!!!! I need the answer ASAP!!!!!
Is dog racing cruel as horse racing? I don't much about dog racing, but I know about the horse racing industry (very cruel). Is dog racing (the GreyHounds) cruel? Why or why not? Mulewrangler: There's also the fact that they wouldn't have got hurt if they weren't in the race.
If you had a racing greyhound, what would you name it? We're at the dogtrack, folks! The dogs are in the starting gate, ready to go. What's the name of your race dog??? ........ ..... Aaaaand, here comes Speedy! (fyi - Speedy is the name of the mechanical rabbit that the greyhounds chase around the track) My dog is named: Alpo Burner.
Is there any city in America that has live horse and dog racing? Phoenix was the last one that I knew of, but Phoenix Greyhound Park stopped live racing last year. I was just wondering if there was any cities that had both within 50 miles or so. Houston is the only other city I can think of but Sam Houston Race Park only offers quarterhorse racing which just isn't the same as regular tracks.
How long can Valley Fever stay dormant in a greyhound before causing real heath problems? My greyhound raced in Arizona but has live in BC with us for 5 almost 6 years. She has always had minor coughing and lameness due to what we thought was arthritis. In November of 2006 she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). OS tends to take dogs quickly and we opted for pain management only but now 9 months later she has a large tumor in her right leg and is sometimes completely lame and other times looks fine and runs full speed. She eats well and most of the time is a happy dog. Someone has suggested this could be Valley Fever but is it possible almost 6 years later? Vets up here do not know of Vallet fever so i am trying to do research before bringing this possibility to them.
Do you have an ex racing greyhound? If you do, then you might be sympathetic towards this. Greyhound Action North East are holding a meeting next Tuesday 22nd May, to coincide with the biggest Greyhound Race of the year at Sunderland Dog Tack. We will be leafleting the public in an effort to raise their awareness of the mass slaughter and suffering of greyhounds in the industry. We are not extremists but we all feel passionately about pets being treated as just financial assets and disposed of, once they become a liablity. If you would like to help, then please post an answer or email me. http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/ This site will give you an idea as to the suffering these graceful creatures endure at the hands of some of their ruthless owners.
How can I adopt a dog from another owner in an animal clinic setting? I have witnessed so many greyhound racing dogs get put to sleep just because they have a broken leg, and because the owner doesn't want to spend the time and money to help them regain health. I have such a strong love for these dogs and I want to adopt a greyhound before the owner has the chance to euthanise it. How would I go about doing this?
Is adopting a retired racing greyhound a good idea? My husband and I have just moved into a house with a 1/3 of an acre backyard. We would love to get a dog and I have heard greyt things about greyhounds. The cons for a dog being a part of our home would be that we have a cat and my husband and I work between 8-10 hours on most weekdays. Is a greyhound a good match?
Greyhound dog advice? My husband & I have been married for almost 2 years & have no children (not for another 7 or 8 years) but we do have a cat. We were interested in getting a dog, & we have been researching Greyhounds for quite some time. I know that they do tend to have the instinct to chase (due to their racing background) but many are cat tolerable. I have a few questions for grey owners: Our cat is 2 years old, 16 lbs and pretty much docile, but at times runs through the house & wants to play. I used to dog sit, & she has been with 2 Jack Russels, an Airedale & a Dachshund on many occasions & pretty much stays away from them. Do you think our cat will be receptive to a greyhound & vice versa? (I would separate them during the day when we're at work just to make sure.) We live in an apt (1145 sq. ft.) & live next door to a high school with a running track. Would this work for exercise if the grey is kept on a leash & is taken out quite a few times a day? Do you think a grey would be right for us?
Greyhound records for my dog? Well i have a retired racing greyhound called rocky(used to be lucky) and i found his race record and pedigree but i was wodnering if any greyhound race fans out there have any info/pics or videos of soem race day he was in it or won-i thought it would be really interesting to seem him in his race days before he reitred. his race name was harsu hawn or harsu hahn or any pics or that of his family(mother and father or that. thanks for any help http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?z=ScdAtv&d=harsu+hawn&sex=&color=&birthyear=&birthland=
If I have a dog that is epileptic can I get another dog? I have an epileptic beagle at home, she has epileptic fits during the night about once every couple of months. I was thinking of adopting a retired racing greyhound. Should it be ok to get another dog and keep them together at night or is there a chance the new dog might attack the one having the fit?
Has anyone been to a greyhound race track??? I am plaining on going to one tonight and placing some bets, do you think you have a greater chance at winning here than the casino??? I am going for fun but I would like to win some money...anyone have any suggestions to how to pick the winning dog??? I know there are like 7 or 8 dogs who race can I place a bet on all the dog on one race?? If not, then how many dogs can I bet on per race?
Have you people really never heard of tattoo'ing a dog? I asked the question about getting mine tattooed and got some fairly disturbing answers. First of all, of COURSE she always has her collars and tags on---I thought that part would be implied, but evidently not. Collars can be removed or fall off. (duh!) And tattoos on dogs are certainly not insane.....many show dogs, police search and rescue dogs, racing greyhounds, hunting dogs, and even dogs adopted from some pounds are often tattooed. I would not brand my dog (as one poster suggested) because THAT is insane. I had my horse freeze-branded because I wanted a visible deterrent for thieves, but I don't intend to do that to my 10-pound Dachshund. I want her to have the same type of tattoo as many other dogs have for the purpose of identification should she become stolen or lost. Micro chips are not 100% fool-proof because not all scanners are compatible. So, if you've never heard of dog tattoos, don't be so quick to squash the person asking the question. So....one more time....does the vet do this or do I have to take her to a specialist? If you don't know the answer, please do a bit of thinking before commenting. It's a virtually painless procedure, less than the large-bore needle used to insert the micro-chip, so spare me the comments about cruelty. I DID get some good answers too and, for those, I am thankful. I just wish some people would use a little common sense before commenting. V....would you like someone to "spay" you against your will? I didnt think so....but sometimes it's neccesary. Valerie....because if she's lost and her collar is off, what good would it for me to post LOST signs that say "red Dachshund----looks like all other red Dachshunds"...? Bex....I keep asking (only twice) because I dont believe I have to settle for uneducated and belittling answers. Also I dont want opinions....I asked for answers. There's a difference.
Would Mike Vick be treated the same if these dogs were greyhounds? Michael Vick is going to spend time in prison for cruelty to dogs. However, isn't it true that, after greyhounds are done racing and breeding, they get put down as well? Greyhounds aren't even allowed to be adopted out to families because breeders are concerned those dogs will breed new race dogs. In fact, if you own a greyhound and the original owner finds out, they can come pick up your dog and kill him. What's with the double standard?
Should I get into greyhound racing? I am deciding between two careers: Racing Greyhound owner/trainer and acupuncturist. I love and respect animals and especially dogs, but I heard racing is a very cruel sport. Is there anyway to be a responsible and humane trainer, yet successful at the same time? A greyhound trainer I know said that everyone uses drugs and steroids on thier dogs and unless I do the same,I will never win any races,is it true?
How much money is a 50 lb sack of dog food? How much money is a 50 lb sack of dry Purina dog food at Sam's club? what are the ingredients? i want to know because my family may get a retired racing greyhound. Excuse me, but my dad had a German Shepherd/Collie mix when he was a kid, and the dog was REALLY healthy. the only time he got sick was when he got carsick. also, a friend of mine feeds here dogs Purina, and the only time they got sick was when they caught kennel cough when being boarded while their owners were on vacation.
What do you think about Greyhound racing? I've heard all the hype. But I'm curious how educated people feel on this? Is it really a terrible sport for the dogs? The horse people don't condemn horse racing (that I've heard). Is it the PETA people turning legitimate businesspeople into the spawn of Satan? Did a few bad apples spoil the reputation of everyone? Cat: I totally agree with you and I appreciate that you didn't just repeat the facts that may or may not be exaggerated propaganda (like they torture and shoot the dogs???). I love lure coursing and I know the Greyhounds love to run... but I don't think anyone educated has a problem with Greyhounds running. It's how the treat and care for the dogs. That's what I'm unsure about. The dogs won't win unless they're treated well... but what about the dogs that are no longer needed? I dunno. Caninelegion: Thanks for your answer. Sounds like you have some knowledge about this. Do you know how I can find out about the "industry responding positively to the criticism"? I don't know enough about Greyhound racing to know the first place to look.
can i watch greyhound racing online? i recently got introduced to greyhound racing and i want to know more about the dogs for a while without placing a bet i would love to watchsome recent races online so i can familiarise with the dogs, please UK racing only not American or any other. please do not tell me about how cruel it is and how they are mistreated, there are pple the world over being mistreated,i wouldn't careless about a dog
Question for greyhound owners. Are they a high exercise demending dogs ??? we( me my mom and my dad) are thinking about adopting/buyin' 3rd dog.we already have a setter and a pug they are boths puppies our pug in 7 months old and our setter is 8 months old we're looking for a dog that will "match:" the energy level of our setter she is really energetic and really lively dog i take her 3 tiems a day for 1 hour walk i thoguh about a greyhound since they were( or still are) used as racing dogs i think that it will be a good choice but im gettign confused a bit i did somereseach and i found that they are more of a couch potato.we thoguh about adopting a retired racing greyhound
How do you feel about the Greyhound racing industry? In case you didnt know: The dogs stay in a small kennel on shredded newspaper all day unless they are running. If you ever visit a "Adopt a Retired Racing Greyound" facility, you can see that many are very thin and have cuts and abrasions because they were not taken care of. Many die every year by euthanasia simply because they could not run fast enough.
What is life with a greyhound like (interested in hearing from current and former greyhound owners)? I'm thinking about adopting a retired racing greyhound from an agency. My elderly Mom and I live together (I will be walking, exercising, feeding, grooming, etc). I do work full time and my Mom will be alone with the dog for 9-10 hours a day/5 days per week. My biggest concerns are her being knocked down/tripped by a dog. Her mobility is limited/she is not too steady on her feet. We have owned dogs in the past but not for a few years (last dog died of old age four years ago). We don't want a dog that is too hyper or barky and from what I have read about greyhounds this should not be an issue. We have a large fenced yard with a 5 foot chainlink fence. I want a dog that keeps my Mom company during the day, barks if someone is at the door, and can go for walks in the evening so I have an exercise partner. I have pet birds but I plan on keeping the greyhound out of the room the birds are in and I plan to select one of the dogs the rescue calls "cat safe" for safety. Any thoughts/comments?
what can I expect if I adopt a senior dog? in the future (like 5 years from now) I want to adopt a healthy senior dog. Do I need to do anything special for it? Does it need a senior dog food? I will most likely adopt a senior ex-racing greyhound
what are peoples views on greyhound racing? I know a few greyhound owners and trainers and i love greyhounds personally as pets i was just wondering other people's views on greyhound racing and issues such as muzzling in public for a dog without an aggressive nature
Need link to bizarre greyhound race.? I recall seeing a greyhound lead a race and stop to leave a deposit on track and still win the race! The second dog stopped to check it out, (as dogs would do), and still placed. It was so weird that I don't blame people for finding it hard to believe. Anyone else seen this. It was on T.V. years ago.
What is "Horse racing" in Italian? Native/experienced speakers only, no machine translation. Try to answer all 3 qns, not just 1 or 2. 1/ What is "Horse racing" in Italian? 2/ And what is "Greyhound (dog) racing" ? 3/ Are these popular in Italy Native/experienced speakers only, no machine translation. We are talking about the most common term for the SPORT - not literally 1 (or more than 1) horse racing !! Google = 234,000 for "Corse Dei Cavalli" = Google = 40,300 for "corsa di cavalli" So it would appear Corse dei Cavalli is the common usage in Italian?
Dog racing question? Yes I know this is the horse section. What are the smartest types of wadgers in greyhound racing. Please no answers from people with only horse racing experience.
do you think greyhound racing is cruel? do you think they treat the dogs cruelly? Do you think it is a bad sport because they keep them in crates? I am neutral when it comes to greyhound racing. I do not know enough about it to make a judgment yet.
A question for racing greyhound trainers!? Can you feeed a racing dog on raw food or can their high energy needs only be met by those specialy made diets for racing dogs? (just pondering this as I hope to train my own greyhounds someday =D)
whats the best novel idea? i want to write a novel that generates lots of attention to animal rights.should i do a story on fighting dogs, greyhound racing, or escape from a laboratory?or could i tell of an animal who survives euthinasia, and proves himself to the world?
