Why don't you get picture cards in packs of cigarettes in England anymore? Once in Britain, cigarette packets always contained picture cards and most other countries still produce cards with their ciggies. Often the cards had pictures of sports cars, famous footballers, cricketers, politicians, race horses etc like they do in other countries now. They are now collectable and worth lots of money they can also be used as trading cards. What I don't understand is why cigarette companies do not use these cards as it would be a good way of encouraging people to buy their brand.

Man o' War, a donkey named Wisty and other horses in Heaven? A long time ago I read a short story in which the race horse Man 'o War had just arrived in heaven. He found there several other horses that had been the horses of famous generals that continuously argued over who was the greatest general. Standing alone and often being picked on by the other horses is a little donkey by the name of Wisty. In the end, the reader finds out that the donkey carried the Prince of Peace. Can anyone tell me the name of the story and the author please? Or maybe tell me a place that I can look for it?
Secretariat Coin And Photo Value Question? I have a Gold coin of the famous race horse Secretariat that is still in its case and is untouched. It has his head profile on one side along with his name on the upper left side and on the flip side is a picture of him running in the Belmont Stakes(the final race). And there is 2 of the horses he defeated in the background along with some of the stands where the onlookers could watch. And that side has "The Belmont Stakes" Printed across the bottom. As for the photo, it is cased in a well kept white with gold flip frame. On the front of the frame before you open it, it has ALL the printing in gold leaf. The first print is centered at the top and says, "Secretariat, Horse of the Year 1972". Then in the middle-left it has Printed exactly like this "Owned By..........Meadow Stable" and then on the Middle-right it has printed exactly like this "Trained By..........Lucien Laurin". And on the bottom centered it has "Eclipse Awards Dinner, Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles California, January 26, 1973" Then lastly in the very lower right corner it has printed in small font "Compliments Of: Daily Racing Form". On the inside (where the photo itself is located) there is an old photo of secretariat and who i believe to be Eddie Maple, the jockey who raced Secretariat in his last race. The photo is in full color and Eddie and Secretariat are walking alongside another horse and trainer leading them to the gates. Secretariat is in his green and white checkered mask and Eddie is in his green and white checkered jockey racing polo. There are even a few men standing in the background watching. You can see the warm up arena in the background and the stables. And lastly, there is a brand on the bottom right of the photo in gold leaf that says "Daily Racing Form" And it is Beautifully bordered in a gold leaf pattern and it has a small gold leaf Secretariat and Eddie in the center between Racing and Form. Can i have ANY opinions on what these may be worth. I tried to go into as much detail as i could to give you a good picture of what i have. Thank you for your responses.

Do you think the Grand National is cruel? Do you think the Grand National and other types of horse races / jumping tournements are cruel. I have been told so many conflicting things with regards to these sports (I don't ride but love horses). I don't agree with greyhound racing. I can't seem to make up my mind about horse sports though. I recently saw a clip of that famous french horse (at badminton) getting hurt and killed by that flag and it was so upsetting. Why did you get the type of dog(s) you have? Just wondering why everybody got the dog(s) you have. What made you get the specific breed, or mix, or whatever the case may be? Also, why did you name them what you did? Here's my reasoning for my dogs. Telly- Male Chihuahua-he was bought for my oldest daughter. She named him after a famous Thoroughbred race horse (Tell-Like) that my sister's boss owns. My daughter is in love with racing, and since Popite got it for her, she thought she would honor Popite by naming the dog after one of his horses. I brought the pup home while my daughter was away, to surprise her. He was in Texas at my sister's house, and I brought him to Arkansas. Haylee Bug-Female Black Lab-She was my neighbor's mistreated dog. She came to my house one day, my kids and I fell in love, so we asked if we could keep her. My oldest named her Haylee, Bug was added because my son's nickname is Bug, and she is his dog. I love Labs, had one when I was a kid, named Grizzly. he was the best dog I remember from my childhood. Grizzly-8 month male Lab- My neighbor had him and his two brothers, who unfortuantely later died from Parvo, poor things didn't stand a chance. Nothing anyone could do for them. Grizzly came up and was such a good dog, the neighbor gave him to us. Named him that because when he sleeps he sounds like a bear when he snores! Shakespeare--Male Black Lab, found him at work, he appeared to have been ran over, so I took him home and nursed him back to health and still have him. His name was Bear when I first brought him home, because he growls low and long, like a bear. My oldest renamed him Shakespeare, not too sure why. She loves to read, so maybe she read one of his plays. I have had other breeds, including the world famous Heinz 57, but Black Labs are my favorite. I don't really know if it is the friendly eyes and face, how they are so easy to teach to do things with the kids, or if it is just maybe that when one of the kids or even myself seem to need someone, they are always right there, no matter what. All my dogs have been, but the ones I have now, well, just seem so much more lovable. Also, I have 4 kids, so I need Dogs that can run and play with them. Which Haylee and Grizzly love to play with the kids, or go for walks while the kids ride their bikes. So I guess all of that is why. Why are people giving thumbs down on some of the answers?

What do You think of my horse racing speech? Two years ago in May 2005, Barbaro, a 3 year old Thoroughbred racehorse won the Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later he shattered his leg in the Preakness race. The next day he underwent surgery for his injuries . In July 2005, he developed laminitis in his left rear leg , a very painful disease in the hoof caused by a failure of the hoof bone to connect to the hoof wall. He had an additional five surgeries, and his prognosis varied as he remained for an extraordinarily long period of time in the equine Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pennsylvania. While his right leg eventually healed, a final risky surgery on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front legs. His veterinarians and owners then concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007. Barbaro broke his right hind leg in more than 20 places: a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint was dislocated. If Barbaro had not ridden in that race, he might still be alive today. The Dangers and evils of horse racing I’m going to present to you the dangers and evils of professional horse racing. Every year hundreds of race horses are raced to death, and many more are injured. If they aren’t winning, then they are frequently neglected and abused. Something needs to be done to stop the abuse and help these horses. Injuries There are many dangers in horse racing. A horse can slip and fall, or step on its leg wrong and break it. Another famous racehorse, Ruffian, the unbeatable thoroughbred filly was running in a match race against the Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. Half way through the race she stepped wrong and completely snapped her leg. She had a successful surgery, but when she woke up from it she accidentally broke her other leg. She was put down eight hours after the accident. In the 2005 racing year, 320 racehorse deaths were reported in California alone, a number believed to be an all-time high. It was a 32 percent increase from the previous year, with 154 of the deaths coming during races, up 34 percent from the previous year. And horse racing doesn’t just take a toll on the horses. Surprisingly, horse racing is the most dangerous sport for people. For every 100,000 fatalities nationwide, about 128 are caused by horse racing. Animal Aid, a British animal rights organization. Founded in 1977, Initiated a Race Horse Death Watch was launched during the 2007 Cheltenham Festival in England. Its purpose is to expose and record every on-course Thoroughbred fatality in Britain. Their research indicated that an average of 375 horses is raced to death every year. One-third of them die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable. From Winner to Dinner In 2002 the Kentucky Derby 1986 Winner Ferdinand was slaughtered in a Japanese slaughter house. Though Americans were outraged, not much was done to stop slaughter until 2006 when an Anti Slaughter bill was put into the senate. The bill passed but it only protects horses going to slaughter in America. It does not protect horses being shipped out of the country and into Mexico and Canada. More than 90% of horses going to Slaughter are healthy horses, and nearly half of those horses are racehorses. In slaughter houses the horses are neglected, abused and poorly fed, if fed at all. They are given just enough nourishment to keep them alive until they can be slaughtered. Overworking Overworking is another danger. Many good horses are ruined because they are raced too much when they are still too young. The official thoroughbred birthday is January 1st when they can officially start racing, so none of the horses are actually a year old. Some are younger than others, thus a 5 months old horse could be racing an 8 month old horse. Since the horses are raced when they are so young and still growing, it causes bone problems. They can develop Arthritis at early ages. The bones can chip and create bumps on their legs, and their joints are often ruined resulting in lifetime lameness. Being raced or trained every day is very hard on a horse, especially a young, growing horse. If trained at the right age (3 or 4) a Thoroughbred can be raced up to the age of 10. But in America, the average retiring age is 4 or 5. No place to call home Many people think that racehorses ‘live the good life’. They get nice grain and fresh hay every day. They live in heated barns and have nice comfortable stalls with grooms that go in and clean up for them every 5 minutes. The problem is that they are not living as horses should, they live in a box stall, are expected to be explosively athletic at the drop of a hat, are given a bit of a cool out, and put back in their stalls. They are fed well, but are often handled by people who don't care who they are as an animal but rather how they translate into a paycheck, or who don't have the time to work with them individually because they have a whole barn of 20 horses to care for. A horse needs play time; time to just be a horse. It needs time in a pasture to run around and release pent up energy. These racehorses are so expensive that they can’t be let outside for fear of being hurt. They have no real place to call home. These Racehorses are still just horses. They still need interaction with other horses. The jockeys that ride them see them as a money maker, and they don’t actually ride the horse until the race. They have different riders all through training. Think about it Horse Racing is seen as a prestigious sport. Millions of spectators flock to the races, bet on a horse they think looks fast, and sit and cheer that horse on. Yet few ever consider the well being of the horse. They must run at top speed anywhere from a quarter mile to three miles. If they don’t win they are cooled off quickly and put back in their stall while their owners go on to race the next horse in the stock. If they do win they are taken right to the winners circle. An odd spooky blanket of flowers is thrown onto their back and lights start flashing from cameras and they are paraded off to their stall with a crowd of people following. Next time you go to a horse race or even see it on TV, think about the horses. I hope this speech has prompted you to look at it differently. Thank you. honestly, thank you very much, but I spent WEEKS researching that. I know what happens. What happened to Barbaro wasnt a freak accident. It happens to race horses every year. I myself ride at a top class jumper barn. The horses there are treated just as well as racehorses and they arent breaking legs every year. They get time to rest and they are put out to pasture when they are tired. So plz, dont tell me i dont know wat im talking about.
What to do? Where to go? My family and I are planning a trip to Kentucky this year. We would like to know where all the good places are to see historical land markes or I mean like famous spots that you can see horse historical markers. Because we are planning a trip and we would like to look at stuff that has to deal with horse racing... ex: where can we go to find a horse museum, or the Kentucky horse park, and racehorse stuff like that. Just incase you guys/gals might know, please answer this it will help us out a lot! Because we really want to go to these places because we live in Wisconsin and we've only been to 2 other states which= Minnesota and Michigan. Thanx! ;) Really apprecaite it!♥ Also if there is any place to go to deal something with Barbaro (huge fan... still and always will be)

Do you know the horror behind the glamour? The horror behind the glamour They race around the track, kicking dust clouds in the air. They run neck to neck, each one trying to overtake the other. The crowd goes wild. But suddenly, just as they reach the finish line, one stumbles and falls. A hush falls over the crowd. The race is now finished, along with the fallen horses life. This happens to be a daily battle. Many people believe that the owners of racehorses treat their horses like ‘gold’ and never abuse them, and the reason why horses race are because they ‘are born to run’. I can tell you that those three statements are false, in almost all the cases, especially the later one. Racehorses are not born to run, they are born for money. Racehorses are not treated like gold and ARE abused. Their owners work them more then twice as hard as your everyday horse. Racehorses are abused with crops to force them to run faster. Researches have found, that At LEAST one horse from each race suffers physically. In almost all the cases that the horse suffers in, whereas the horse cannot be raced anymore, the good racehorses are sold for stud, but the others are euthanized. Many have heard of the ‘all famous’ racehorse Sea biscuit. But one less known fact about him, is that he was raced 89 times, and only lived to be 15. Most horses can live to be 25. Barbero’s last race ended with a broken leg. Commando, 1990 & 1991 horse of the year, died at age 8. Ruffin was raced after she broke and fractured her leg, broke her leg again in another race, and was euthanized at 3 years old. Black Gold, raced 35 times in 7 years. He suffered a quarter crack in his hoof as a four year old, but was still raced. He finished his last race on three legs, and then was put down at age seven. April 28, 2006. Miss Pretty Promise’s collapsed near the finish line and struggled to rise on her shattered forelegs. Dr. Stewart Marsh had taken one look at the grotesquely twisted legs and saw there was no hope of recovery. "Both front legs were broken," Marsh said minutes later, shaking his head as he walked off the track. These are not the only ones.
