New Hampshire Fisher Cats Knowledge Base
What is a fisher cat ? I'm visiting in New Hampshire. I was going to walk down a trail and the locals told me not to do it becasue I might get attacked by a fishercat.
How can I find out if wild coyotes are in the area? Cats' missing? I lost 4 cats these last 3 months and obviously I'm now keeping the rest indoors..especially at night. I suspect coyotes but am unsure because i haven't seen any and I've been staying up late and getting up early keeping my eye out. I also haven't heard any howling. I don't believe it's a fisher. All the rest of wildlife has seemed to disappear..like raccoons and skunks. What can I do to at least see them? Any possibilities I can follow them to collect my cats bodies? What are their habits..when are they active? I don't plan to hunt them..as much as I am extremely emotionally upset my babies are gone. I know they were just doing what comes natural..I just want to know their habits and what time of year and day to watch out for them. I don't want to loose another of my babies. I live in central New Hampshire by the way. Not implying theyre eating the skunks and raccoons..just that those animals know something dangerous is in the area and hi-tailed (no pun) out of the area.
Strange animal call in the middle of the night what was it? I was camping in the woods in southern New Hampshire in late fall of last year. We had left food outside in the middle of the night and around 2 am there was two ear piercing screams that woke me up, one of my friends in the tent woke up but quickly fell back asleep, unable to recall the event in the morning. There were two high pitched screams almost like a baby crying starting quietly gradually getting louder then slowly dying down. There were two screams in quick succession each lasting about 2 seconds the second not as loud as the first. The casual explanation is that is was a fisher cat but I have heard its call before the call was similar but not the same. Does anyone have any suggestions? This event occurred about a year ago and I have always wanted to find out what kind of animal it was. It was probably one of the scariest moments in my life. http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/soundfx/animals/animals_sounds/BigCats_sounds/lion_lynx_wav.html like this a little longer
