Race horses? What does it mean when a race horse is claimed? I know it has something to do with people buying or selling race horses.
race horses.? i am doing a report and i wanted to know when people start training race horses.also, what do u think about barbaro? some people think they should have put him to sleep right away, but i am glad they didnt. he didnt live for very long but when he was alive he wasnt in pain. and because they saved him for that long now they know more about what to do in that kind of case. they said most of the time they just put the horse to sleep when they are hurt that bad but now they can do more about it.
How and why are race horses assigned weights to carry? I've read of good race horses being required to carry 130+ lbs against younger or less successful horses carrying much less. I thought it was to give a younger horse more of a chance but isn't a race about which horse is fastest? Why is a better horse penalized & how do they determine the weights?
Why does the American Horse Racing Industry still race horses cruelly on hard dirt tracks ? It seems the rest of the developed world now race horses on much softer turf or grass race courses. As a result in places like Australia, UK, New Zealand etc....we have far fewer injuries and less of a problem with horses breaking down afterwards or having to be destroyed because they broke their ankles or fetlocks on such a dirt hard surface. Just like the runner up at last weekends Kentucky Derby, why can't America stop being so cruel to its Race Horses ? Run on grass or turf why don't you!
Do you think race horses should be trained at a later age than 2? As many people know, race horses start getting trained and raced at the fragile age of only 2 years old. At this stage the horse is still growing and it's skeletal structure isn't as strong as it is a few years later. As a result, there is a high chance of them getting seriously injured. Most racehorses are retired by the end of their fourth year due to injury, chronic illness or an inability to win in higher classes.
Who are your favorite race horses and why? Mine are 1. Ruffian; she never lost a race and would have won her match race if she hadn't broke down and she started a big woman's rights movement 2. Secretariat; he won by amazing lengths and spectacular times he was also on Times magazine 3. Native Dancer; he was grey, most people think that grey horses race bad and he won good races and sired many good horses he was on Times magazine
How many years do race horses actually race? I know enough for the elite horses race at the top level at 3 years old. How often do they race at say the top 3 races; after 3 years old. Are there any that race at 5 or 6 years old? Jebus I never said I was an expert. But I was assuming since it seems the top level horses in history were 3 years old. I never said I was an expert. DUH thats why I was asking. Thanks for the first two for answering the question
Do you think that race horses enjoy the thrill of competition? You know those race horses that compete in like the Kentucky Derby, and have the jockey's riding them around the track. Notwithstanding that these horses have accepted humans as their masters and caretakers, do you think that when they're out there competing - that they know it's a race and get competitive and try to beat the other horses to the finish line?
Where do i find information about an ex- race horses i might buy? I have a deposit down on an ex-race horse, however he is 6. The vets say that is his prime years. So we are hoping that he did not just pass the vet check due to Bute. Is there a site or anyway to figure out the history of this horse. His racing name is Ben's Courage and is currently in colorado. Thanks a bunch for your help!
How can you use a race track for practice with your own horses? I just started owning horses race worthy and I was wondering if, because as of yet I don't have my own practice track made up, if there is a way to when no one is at the track you can rent it for a few hours for workouts. If there is, I'd like to know about how I can go about having the privilege? Please only answers regarding my questions. No side comments about this or that thank you.
How to get x race horses paper? I just bought an x race horse named Honey Date and i know she raced in New York. the person/trainer has her papers. does anyone know how that works, how i can get in contact with the person? Perhaps has anyone heard or seen of her? I bought her from a girl who got her off the track about a year ago, she never got her registration papers ect.
Why do show horse people think they know what's best for race horses? I love some of the comments I hear on this site and also at the farm I send my babies to get started at, which also has some show horses boarded there. If these people knew the first thing about the industry maybe I'd care what they say. I don't tell them how to jump a horse, don't tell me how to win a race and how horses should be managed. But I think it's funny, so lets hear some good ones. theboy, it compelled you to answer son. feke, agreed. kmn, good answer. lkf..thank you,I worked hard at getting thick in the gym, it helped me become a decent fullback in high school, which was also the last time I heard word association. It is called an industry because it is, there are hundreds of different job titles because of horse racing, you just decide to pick slaughter(which thankfully will be a thing of the past very soon), typical. Star, the only person I ever called stupid was the vegan who wanted to ban racing, I have never asked a question about chasing. There is alot of positive change that is happening in racing these day, but it will take time.Moving back the starting age will never happen, horses ran many times at 2 years ago and had no problems, people need to breed more wisely instead. Also, how many chase horses were flats first, quite a few.My oldest mare is 19 and my oldest runner is 9, they both ran at 2 and both look and are as sound as a 2yo.
should cats be allowed to own race horses? a friend of my aunt's passed away over a year ago, and she left everything to her three cats in the will. the estate was sold off, and with the proceeds, the cats received memberships at a posh country club, where they now reside. in the will it specifically said that her two throughbred horses were not to be sold, and would be the property of the cats. however, the will is being disputed and the party wants the estate to sell the horses, stating that cats cannot legal own race horses. just want to know whether or not you think the cats should be allowed to have ownership of the horses.
Are Arabian Horses The Only Horses that Race in the Kentucky Derby? Hey Guys I'm new to the world of horses and I was pretty much just wondering what type of horses race in Derbys! Also what are your opinions on the best horses ( top 5)? Do quarter horses or Palaminos do any type of racing still? How do you know if your horse is a pure bred? does it really matter? Could your horse be AHA registered if it wasn't? If your horse was a gelding would it make the value go down? I'm really excited, sorry for all the questions =) -Deba
What race horses have been claimed-then gone on to fame? Horses that were considered nobodies...then they turned out to become great or good horses. Horses like Seabiscuit,Lava Man etc. I would love to find some older horses, rather than recent ones. but those suggestions are great too! Thanks!
For those who know anything about race horses, please help? ok so i was trying to explain pin firing therapy on race horses, you know when the red hot probs are used to burn off the dead tissue, but i was trying to remember the ointment thing that you can brush on a horses legs that burns and blisters...does anyone know the name of it? its smells kinda like Hot peppers.
I was wondering why race horses race at two years old? I am not trying to start an uproar, I was honestly just wondering. I have had a lifetime of experience in the more "western" side of horses, with a smattering of dressage, and a little more hunter/jumper, but have never really spent much time on the paddock side of the track rails. I see horses "started" at two in western training, but not really put under a great deal of strain until they are three or older. I am looking for an informed answer from the inside of the track, thank you.

How can we guess the winning Horses in a race? I usually watch horse racing a lot. but I never won a single game.. what is the source that I should do to get familiar about it? and so I can win atleast exacta or trifacta in the races?
Are there lists produced after a horse race of the horses that sustained an injury? I know nothing about horse racing. However, I'm trying to identify a horse that I'm almost postive raced at Penn National on 1/04/07. He injured his leg and was sold at an auction for slaughter less than a week later. He has a lip tattoo but only 3 numbers are identifiable . If anyone has any suggestions on how I could identify this horse, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
question about the weight of race horses? i'm trying to find a simple answer on the interent of the "average" weight of a race horse, how much is the "average" weight of a race horse? all i need is a simple answer, i don't need a big paragraph.
What makes race horses want to compete against each other, and what drives them to win? Also why is it when a horse injures itself, such as Barbaro did in the Preakness, want to keep running, even though he was so severely injured? Poor guy, I said my prayers for him! C'mon, put a little more effort into it, I know the horse has a jockey and uses the crop, but what makes the horse really go at it-and want to beat the other horses!?....
how much do most race horses make in a year? I saw that some that make up to a million dollars a year and i see some horses that make up to two hundred thousand a year and i just wanted to know the average amount most horses make.
How do Jockeys know Race Horses are ? Running as fast as they possible can? Example: Let's say on MOnday, the race horse runs the track in 3 minutes. Then on Tuesday, he runds the track in 2 minutes. How does the jockey know on RACE DAY....the horse will do it in two minutes instead of 3 ?
Why do they kill race horses after they break a leg? Shouldn't we kill our athletes who break their leg too, figuring sometimes they won't be 100% anymore? Why is it ok to just dispose of an animal in this fashion, is it because you can no longer use it for what you wanted it too?
Race horses? Ok, I bascially want any thing and everything you know about riding race horses. I know I'll get a lot of race horses are great I've ridden loads of retired race horses but these ones are different. These horses are not well trained lesson horses. This is a follow up to that question about "I've almost lost confidence in riding help!" I've quit that stable but the other one I found only has retired race horses. I'm in a devolping country abroad and am about a intermediate riding level. I know to keep a lighter pressure on the reins and it doesn't take big kicks to get a canter so what else? Advice? Is it ok for me to ride race horses like this? If you've ever ridden horses that just retired plz tell me every thing. I need advice pronto! Thanks soo much! PLZ Give me advice! I really think that I could ride at this stable wit some help... You don't really understand the term "devolping country" I'm living in Azerbaijan! They don't train horses well here. The problme is I'm here for 4 years and feel that since I'm already 12 skipping these 4 years would make it impossible to have a career with horses. Is it better to ride a race horse freash off the track or a green horse that hasn't had training? I'm about intermidiate but am not sure what's best... If anyone has an idea what I should do help? race horses? i am agaisnt horse racing! those poor horses are bred to run their hearts out everyday, and they get surgery to make their throats bigger to breath better which causes them to barf up all of their food, and most of them break their legs, or go crazy, or have lung problems! its not fair to those horses! i say they are all abused and i dont care what anybody else says! all to get money on betting its so sad.. and even though they love to run, its cruel to make them run more than they want to! ive seen countless horses get put down. ad even after some of them stop racing they cant even do anything else becuase they cant breath or just want to run so much they do anything. so its people that made them want to run so much not only the horses they are teated well when they arent running. but when they are running its really mean take a look at barbaro! no all of you that dissagree are wrong when they take thgem off the track t see if they do other sports, then they are crazy i know alot of those horses and they had to be woreked with for a long time, and i personally know of a lady that races horses and she gets their throats opened wider, and then they cough up their food, not barf so shut up i know what i am talking about!!
Why do race horses have such unusual names? Like "Comply or Die" or names like, say, "Mr Jones's Winnings" or "Sitting on The Fence" (last two made up, but wouldn't surprise me if these names existed). Have always wondered this.
Why are there other horses who are not racing in the paddock before a race? I went to the race track for the first time on Saturday and when we went to the paddock to look at the horses for the next race, there were generally other horses there that were not for the next race. We asked one of the handlers and he said that the horse was racing the next day and gave us the name, but due to a language barrier we couldn't figure out more than that. What was the horse there for? Due they get a vet check the day before they race in the paddock? These horses were not saddled and were taken back to the stable area after being in the paddock. And we did see that the horse he named was in the program as running the next day.
