Mixed breeds? So is everyone against mixed breeds, or just paying an huge amount for a mixed breed? Just curious what the underlying problem is?
mixed breeds? is it possible for a fish to be a mixed breed ex.( blue tang and purple tang) if it is how wolud i know if their mating thanks
Why are there more mixed breed dogs in shelters than there are pure breeds? At my local shelter and at petfinder most dogs are mixed breeds and we adopted a mixed breed and she is great but why are they the majority in the shelter. Some pure breeds get abused and go to shelters. Why shelter workers don't want people buying pure breeds from breeders because mixed-breeds get put down. Then why don't they put more purebreds in the shelter?
What are the mixed breeds that are not recognized but accepted? Based on Erica's question about mixed breeds for a purpose? What are they? And what are they used for? This is an appropriate dog-related question and is not ranting or chatting. THANK YOU. Ok. I think "Cur" dogs is a better term for these dogs than "mixed breeds" so people don't auto-assume I'm talking about hybrid mutts. LOL Julai - I know A LOT of people who think pure breds are too fancy. LOL (red necks). PS I'm in the south.
What makes Heinz 57 mixed breed noble, but a cross of just 2 breeds garbage? I see a double standard here. Mutts with 3 or more breeds mixed in are noble, wonderful pets with hybrid vigor and terrific health. Better than purebreds I've heard several posters say. But if the mutt is a simple cross of just 2 breeds, it's worthless garbage. Is the difference due to the dog's perceived origins? Or because public fancy has shifted to crossbreds since almost anyone can afford a purebred now?
Are there any sites for rescues of particular mixed breeds? My sister wants a black schnoodle. Most of you know me on here, and know my feelings about designer dogs, but her boyfriend has one, and she loves the personality, size, and intelligence. Please, if there is a specific rescue for mixed breeds like this, please let me know. Thanks Ulva, that was exactly what I was looking for! By the way, long time no see! How are you?
Someone please explain to me how mixed breeds always get the "best" traits from both parents? I read so many answers in here that state that mixed breeds are healthier, because they don't have the health problems pure breds do. But how can that really be true? Wouldn't they have more, since they are taking on two different breeds (at least) genetics which would include chances at all the defects for both breeds? You also hear that they will always get the "best" traits? But since genetics is basically a crap shoot, wouldn't the pups have an equal chance at getting all of the worst traits? Can someone please explain the logic? JEP, If they are breed specific, how are they "wiped-out" if you will, when mixed with another breed. Wouldn't you risk getting more, if not worse problems when breeding two different breeds together that both have breed specific issues, since all of the problems are hereditary?
Why do purebred cats have more health problems than mixed breeds? Is it because purebreds are sometimes inbred too close together? (I have a piano teacher who buys only Siamese cats and in the two years I've known her three of them have died before age 6 of kidney disease or some other disease -- and she kept them all indoors, too). Many mixed breeds have been known to live 15 to 20 years and beyond. You don't hardly see that with purebreds.
Does anybody know of dogshows for mixed breeds? Well, we got a Dorkie from a family that had to move out of Germany, and we would like to find a dogshow for him. He is 3 years old and was trained from previous owners (they told us), but never got the chance to compete and have fun. We were wondering if anyone knew of a dogshow that allows mixed breeds to compete. (We live in Germany) Also, thank you for the great answers on my previous question! A Dorkie means Dachshund/Yorkie.
how come mixed breeds end up in the shelter and pure breeds dont? i've always wondered that when i went to the shelter. i own one pure bred dog from a reliable breeder and two dogs from the shelter so called "mutts." i dont understand why mixed breeds end up in the streets and pure breeds dont. they are equally beautiful, intellegent, and lovable. so why is it that mixed breeds end up in shelters and pure breeds dont? well, i didnt mean NO pure breeds i meant why not as many
What is every ones problem with mixed breeds? I really want a pomeranian cross Yorkshire terrier but when I asked last week on yahoo if it would be a good mix and everyone complained an basically said all mix breed or mutts shouldn't be brought. But iv always had mixed breeds and they have always been lovely! What is everyone's problem with mixed breeds? Why are they so slated? Thanks :) x
What are the best mixed dog breeds? For bigger dogs, something that is protective, doesn't shed too much & is willing to learn & be trained. What are the best dogs & mixed breeds?
Can mixed breed dogs be smarter than pure breeds? I've heard today that mixed dogs can be smarter than pure breed dogs (at least in some limits). I thought that this could be some benefit of their genetics but I am not sure. Do you have any answer to this?
why are there no dog shows for mixed breeds? it seems unfair that mixed breeds are just as beautiful, just as important to their owneres as pure breeds are and just as (if not more) talented than pure breeds. so why is there no dog show for mixed breeds?
What is appealing about seeking out particular mixed breeds? I'm not talking about dogs at the animal shelter. I'm talking about people who say they want to get one of those muttadoodles and they are adamant it must be the specific mix they are looking for. If they like the breed traits, why not get one breed or the other? What appeal does the "mix" carry? There's no guarantee which traits the puppy will get from which parent.
What are all the breeds mixed into an Alaskan Husky? I have a female Alaskan Husky / Siberian Husky that looks exactly like a German Shepherd, and acts as protective as one. Just curious. I have done a lot of research, but haven't actually found what breeds are all mixed into an Alaskan. Thank You. I read somewhere that they are not AKC, but they do have a breed name, Alaskan Ameridian Husky. Anything on that?
Can mixed rabbit breeds be show rabbits? I want to do 4h with my rabbit but I think she's a mixed breed. I'm having my mom call the breeder when she gets home just to make sure, but I'm pretty positive she isn't a purebred. She's only nine weeks so it's hard to tell.
why are a lot of dog lovers against mixed breeds? when really the only purebred dogs are the wolf and coyote? Every dog breed was mixed with another to make that breed. Ok now i agree mixing breeds and selling the puppy's to make a profit is very wrong. But we got our saint bernard/ springer mix from a humane society and I think he's an awesome breed.
website that shows what mixed breeds look like? is there a website that shows what the combination of 2 breeds would look like? I think I know what this puppy is but I can't find any similar looking dogs on any internet image searches. It's a fairly common mixed breed I think... possibly choc. lab/pitbull?
Are mixed breeds smarter than purebred dogs? My mom said something about purebred dogs' genes being too close (perhaps relative + relative), and mixed breeds having a chance of being more diverse and smarter. Is it true?
In a breeding program of two mixed breeds, which combination gets you larger puppies? For example if i were to breed a Neapolitan mastiff with a pit bull, should the mother be the pit bull or the neo for the larger pups? We already know that a pit bull will never out weigh a neapolitan mastiff but does the size of that mix matter between dam or sire? I see there are mixed reviews about this question. The mix between Neapolitan mastiff and Pit bull has been done since the 1840's and the breed is call the Bandogge Mastiff. It was a breed that was excellent for keeping the grounds secure at night. I really wanted a reply from experienced doggers but its always great to read comments from the ignorant. I own and train the breed as well as the Presa Canario. I have been doing this for the past 15 years so there's no backyard breeding done here. thanks for your thoughts though.
What is wrong with mixed breeds? I have been reading through some of the questions here and have come across some very nasty answers about mixed breeds. What is the go. I just intentionally breed one why does that make me bad. so you are saying i am scum of the earth. I bet you are a mixed breed. My dog is a working dog not a show dog and there is a need for good working dogs. So how can you judge me at least I am not breeding for some snotty nosed little princess to get quickly tired of the pups then they go to a shelter.
What are some small mixed dog breeds? My mom wants to get a dog, a small one though. We hear that its much easier to train mixed bred dogs and they are cheaper too. Do you know of any good breeds?
Poll: Do you refer to mixed dog breeds by certain names? Labradoodle for Labrador Retriever - Poodle mixes, for example. I don't. A mutt is a mutt. They aren't breeds, they're mixed breeds. They won't ever be breeds, so why not just call them by their parents breeds, instead of using those silly, sometimes confusing, names.
How many of us do dog rescue? What breeds? Mixed breeds? Horror stories? I do Golden Retriever rescue. I've also helped in all breed, or mixed breed rescue and even kitty rescue. I also help by trying to teach people to train their dogs and not add to the pet overpopulation problem. I work with dogs that have been 'damaged' by harsh handling. I rehabilitated a Golden Retriever that had been used as a Guard dog. When I first met him, he threw himself at the chain link fence in the shelter, barking and snarling at me. After a few days of talking to him and chucking him treats, I went into his kennel with him. In a couple of weeks, using Positive Reinforcement and clicker training he came around. Eventually, I fostered him, and he is now a lovely boy with an excellent home. Any dog can be made mean. I can't pick a best answer. Everyone who spends time rescuing deserves all the good things that are possible. It is noble work. Thank you everyone who shared their stories.
Why do people say breeding mixed breeds ae bad? When you are going to take care of the puppies? And why do people say mixed breeds are all the same, and what if the mix breed you want is not in the shelter? And you donate to the pound? i asked a previous question about my dog who might be pregnant but i got her spayed. some people want a particular mixed breed so how is that different than getting a purebred dog? and people who breed mixed breeds take great care of ther dogs *and what if the breeders who breed mixed breeds take great care of ther dogs
Can mixed breeds make good service dogs? My dog Duke I think would make a good service dog! Because he is quiet and friendly and smart and he don't bite people. He's a Lab/rottie mix He is 2. But I can still teach him things and he will learn it.
why does everyone here hate mixed breeds? i know my pomapoo is a mixed breed, but you shoudnt call her a mutt and dont act like your purebred dog is better just because it costs 2,000$. mine costed $800 dollars does it matter??? no. i have a companion and price doesnt matter to me shes still designer and a breed so it doesnt matter!
Why do people have such a negative attitude toward hybrid dogs and mixed breeds? All breeds were created by people via selective breeding of different dogs. What is the difference? Unstopp...(cant read the last of your name and dont care to). What are you basing this on? The poodle varities (goldendoodle, pugle, etc) are usually very carefully mated to produce a dog close the non-poodle variety, but with poodle style hair for allergies. How does that differ from the creation of the Mini Pinscher and the French Bulldog? Unstop again: It sounds like youre speaking of the American Labradoodle which has about a 50/50 chance of having poodle type hair. From there you would breed the ones with that characteristic to produce more (eventually getting something like the Australian Labradoodle which rarely sheds at all, and when it does only small amounts). Just like how your breeds were created! You cant expect it to happen overnight just like it didnt with purebreeds.
Have you seen a person of various mixed breeds ? I am Brazilian I live in Sao Paulo! Brazil has almost all the mixtures over a race! My curiosity is, I know that some people in the U.S. are prejudiced against blacks! and a person who has no defined race! if they lived there would have precoceitos that neither blacks and Asians? you are already a violent person with many mixed race?
Are mixed breeds at the shelter a good first time dog? If they are, why?? I see lots of people saying, go to your shelter and pick out a mixed breed. They are great for first time owners. I think why??? what if there is a chow chow rottweiler mix there?? that wouldn't be a good first time dog!! so can someone explain to me why mixed breeds at the shelter make good first dogs??? Thanks lots!:-)
What are some of the weirder mixed breeds you see in shelter and pounds? I just notice on a shelter a Border Collie x Pomeranian. That a pretty strange mix. http://www.aaps.org.au/dogs/dogs_page_three.html What are some strange mixes that you think are unusual or weird or different? Must be in shelter/pounds or other rescues I'm an thinking of adopting a mutt puppy or crossbred or mutt adult dog in the future from a shelter/pound.
Can mixed breeds be in the professional agility contests? I want to start training dogs for agility contests. I already trained my Siberian husky/Aussie. cattle dog. Does obedience centers train for agility? Should I try to get a job at an obedience center? Do they hire someone who only has personal experence and no professional? If they require professional experence, is there a school for dog obedience. Please no jokes or rude comments. How do you find a school? Thats what I was asking for mzbryana. You dont have to be rude.
Do appartment breed restrictions include mixed breeds aswell? I have a Female Rottwiler/ Lab mix and was wondering if appartments include mixed breeds in their breed restrictions? She has the body of a lab but the markings of a rottwiler if you want to see what she looks like: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/darakablue/missypuppy.jpg
How do you feel about mixed breeds? I personally have a chow chow/boarder collie, chow chow/shibainu, and my baby a lab/boarder collie. all saved from rescue missions. I was raised with pure breed german Shepard's, bought from breeders, my grandfather was a AKC trainer so he insisted on them. I however prefer to get my animals from shelters no matter what breed they are, this way they can have a second chance on life.
Can mixed breeds of dogs go 2 petsmart training? i was just wondering my friend said i couldnt. just wondering! also can mixed dogs go 2 agility? and other events? i know they can not go 2 dog shows also can mixed dogs go 2 agility? and other events? i know they can not go 2 dog shows
How can I tell what breeds are in my mixed breed puppy? Just picked up my new puppy. Just wondering if anyone could tell/guess what is in him, His mum was apparently a collie. He has a mainly black body. Tan on eyes and cheeks, and tan on legs and undersiade of his tail. He has a white bib. He has quite a long skinny tail and a broad body. his muzzle is quite long but not pointy and his ears are long ( but unlike a spaniel) he has little tufts of hair at his mouth thanks
Do mixed breed dogs have better immune system than pure breeds? Thats what the vet told me when I took my german sherpard when he had parvo, and the dog isn't even a year old yet though he did survive it...While I've had my mutt for 4 years and I don't recall him ever being sick.. And I've also read books where they say mutts make for better pets than pure breeds..
Are there dog shows for mixed breeds? I'm just wanting to know because the dogs seem to have fun and i think that might be somthing i want to do with my puppys train them for that. Atleast i want to find out more info. And i don't want to buy a full breed cuz i want to show ppl mixed are just as good
AKC to Allow Mixed Breeds. Would that change what your next dog would be? As an AKC judge, I get a lot of things that others may not get. The AKC is seriously thinking of allowing people to register their mixed breed dogs with the AKC. They would have to be neutered to be registered. The advantage for mixed breed people is that this would allow them to compete with their dogs in AKC event such as obedience, rally, agility, etc. So, if this happened, would it influence the type of dog that you would get for your next dog? On one level I could see it being great to reduce the number of unwanted dogs. On another level, I could see it hugely cutting the demand for purebred dogs. What do you think? I agree. As I understand it, the dog would have to be neutered BEFORE it could be registered. The purpose of registration is simply to keep track of that dog as a unique individual. You could however have the breeders of that dog promoting puppies. Kiki B. As a matter of fact, it was Rottweilers. I was President of Medallion Rottweiler Club for a few years. Dane Lover - Well according to the email I got from the AKC, they are going to be "registering" these dogs. Realize that the AKC wants the money. Additionally, they will register the dogs to keep track of which dog is which so they can issue title certificates to that specific dog.
why do people hate mutts or mixed breeds? i have a purebred rotty and a rotty mixed with lab i see nothing wrong with them just b/c they are mixed doesnt mean they arent better than the purebreds i love my mixed baby as much as my other baby so why do u hate them?
Why some so called dog lovers look at mixed breeds like second class dogs? I have a dog. She's small mixed breed and.. well, kind of odd looking. I think somewhat mixture of poodle and something else, perhaps yorkie... who knows. I got her for my daughter 10 years ago from a local humane society. We just love her, she is the greatest. Some people call themselves dog lover but they get too technical about certain breeds and don't want to bother mixed breeds. It's almost discrimination in the dog world. Oh, well, I still love my dog, she's good. I guess they are missing out on good dogs. conman, I do realize my dog is getting up there. Thanks for pointing that out lol GitEmGang, if you can "pick and choose" and know-it-all, you're better than me but I'm sure everyone tells you you're the best. I know one thing though... many dogs act just like their owners.
Why does it matter what breed a dog is? I dont understand why breeders get so freaked out about mixed breeds.. I understand that breeders work hard and spend a lot of time improving their breeds...and that is great, I look up to them for that. But why is it when you mention wanting to breed cross-bred dogs they get all bent out of shape about it. First of all if they are just doing it for the money that is one thing...but I dont understand what the big deal is about wanting to dedicate their lives by trying to improve the cross-breed and get it recognized by the AKC. Those people are just trying to do what our ancestors did 100's of years ago to get the breeds we have today. There is NO difference!!! So stop being a dog racist! excuse me but how can two dogs not be compatible??? They all originated from the wolf. And also...if you read my question you would see that I ment what is the problem with breeding cross-breeds if you are doing it for the right reasons...NOT for money or anything else besides the love of the breed. And 3rd...if the shelters are over populated then why are there so many breeders for the same breed??? My question SPECIFICLY says that I do NOT agree with doing it for the money! MONEY is not the question!!!! Love of the breed and wanting everyone else to love it is the question Thank you for answering...you have really answered my question in a way that makes sense! I understand now why you feel as you do about the mixed breed! Its nice to get answers like these instead of answers from people who get all mad at you.
What competitions can mixed breeds participate in? I have a lab/shepherd/husky mix. She is crazy smart, a ball of energy, and has great stamina. Then again, she is only 3 months old but I think she'll keep this going for a bit. Can she compete in obedience or agility contests when shes older despite being mixed or what?
What are the breeds of my mixed breed? http://www.flickr.com/photos/10701211@N03/ I got her from a shelter about a year ago. People are always curious because her breed, but I'm not sure. Any ideas? http://www.flickr.com/photos/10701211@N0... I got her from a shelter about a year ago. People are always curious about her breed, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
Our 11 Mo old Rotty has Parvo, the 5 year old and 12 year old mixed breeds are fine. Do I need to worry? The pup was very sick but we got him to the Vet in time and he came home today. The other 2 dogs are fine. All the dogs have had their shots but I guess the pup's might not have taken. We cleaned up the yard, bleached as much as possible, threw out his bed, etc. Do we need to try to keep the dogs apart? What about drinking from the same water bowl? The dogs always drank from the same bowl before the illness and the older 2 are still fine. I guess I feel that the aldult dogs were already exposed and must have been immune or they would have already caught parvo. Also is the pup in danger or reinfecting himself if we didn't get one area (carpet) bleached? Or if we possibly have the germs on our shoes, our fence, or whatever?
what breeds mixed makes a tabico? i just got a cat nd she is sooo cute! my friend gave it to me and told me it was a tabico then she left and i wanted to know what a tabico was is it a mixed breed? what breeds? and tabico is not a color
What breeds do you think my dog is mixed with? She is just over 1 year old... I am pretty sure of the two breeds she may be mixed with (she was rescued from a shelter...so you can't be 100% sure) Just wanted to see what you guys think! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/omyhowtragic/a-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/omyhowtragic/a2-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/omyhowtragic/toys.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/omyhowtragic/a.jpg Thank you everyone for your guesses! Fyi - I could care less what she's mixed with... I love her no matter what. But most of you are guessing what I think she is mixed with.... pit/lab.

Is it possible for a puppy to be mixed with the breeds of Labrador Retreiver and Pomeranian? Several days ago my friend gave me a puppy, he told me that the mom which was his dog was a pomeranian and that he doesn't know what the father is. The pup looks like a labrador but i'm not sure is it possible for the genes of a labrador and a Pomeranian are able to "match" and come out with offsprings. Does anyone have a picture or a dog with that mix? Where can I find an image of that mix? Thank you.
Why do people have such hate for certain types of dogs? Mixed breeds, mutts, etc.? Recently I bought a puggle. I didn't pay thousands of dollars for it. I paid a couple hundred bucks and got one from a very reputable breeder who is "not out to make a quick buck" but just someone who knows they are a mixed breed that has very desireable traits for a house pet. The dog is working out beautifully. She is playful, energetic, but also enjoys quiet time and being a lap dog. We couldn't have asked for a better dog. Other puggle owners have reported similar experiences. But all over the internet and here I see people with passionate hatred of puggles and other mutts or mixed breeds. Why? This hatred reminds me of racial hatred. Pretty much the same thing. These people hate the breed simply because of their genetic makeup and not the content of their character or behavior. I'm just wondering what everyone else has to say about this topic. Anyone notice the amount of peoplel that answer these types of questions just to say, "THEY ARE NOT A BREED." I went out of my way to not mention anywhere in my question that I was under the impression that puggles were a breed, but idiots see that word puggle and they don't even read the question. They think they are so damn smart to point out "THEY ARE NOT A BREED" that they don't stop to read that I never mentioned that they were. Anyway, I understand the value of adopting. Adoption fees cost 150-250 in any shelter around here. I paid $200 for my puggle. And since she is a puppy that came with a health guarantee and vaccination records, I can know that there are no health or behavioral problems that I need to worry about. If there are health problems, I will be reimbursed, and if the dog develops behavior problems, it will be my fault. How come people complain when someone wants to buy a mixed breed dog? I am in the market to purchase a mixed (poodle mix) breed dog from a reputable breeder. But everytime I read about someone who wants to get one, other people have nasty comments about it. I understand everyone has an opinion but ALL dogs deserve to be in loving homes whether or not they live in a shelter, in a pet store, or with a breeder. So if you loved animals soo much then why is it soo hard for those of YOU to accept a beautiful dog no matter where it comes from. What a contradiction!!!! I have been looking for good information from questions that were previously asked on the type of dog that I want but it is pointless for me to ask my own questions because I won't get a real answer either. To all who have nasty wastefull comments, shame on you for ruining a perfectly good place for people to get real information. To everyone else, don't worry about asking things here try using a search engine from any website to find your favorite breeds.
question about mixed breeds vs true breeds? ok, the cockapoo is a cockerspaniel and poodle cross the labradoodle is a labrador retreiver and poodle cross the pugle is a beagle and pug cross a daniff is a mastiff great dane cross back in the 1600's, the greyhound and mastiff were bred and thats what made the great dane, why aren't great danes called muts?
Why is it a bad idea to mate mixed breed dogs? I would just like to educate myself better on my dog and would like some information from you. I have a mixed breed Rottweiler/ Labrdaor. He is so wonderful and although he is far far too early to breed, I may want to in the future. But I have been told never to mate mixed breeds. Why is this? Thank you so much to everyone who answered my question. I will definately NOT be breeding my dog. Thinking about it properly made it all very clear. Thanks again!!!!
Is there a way to show mixed breed dogs? I have a wonderful puppy dog (1yrold) who would be a great show dog. But he is a mixed breed, are there ways that you can show mixed breed dogs in australia as a hobby. Do you think major dog shows will ever show mixed breed dogs? If they did start showing mixed breed dogs it would encourage more people to adopt pets rather to buy designer or pedigree breeds.
Where do you go to mix dog breeds? I want a dog but I want the dog to be two different breeds. Is there any place where you can get the mixed breed that you want? For example,if I wanted a beagle and a lab, where could I go to get a dog with specific breeds? PLease help. I would appreciate it! Thank u everyone 4 ur answers! I decided that I am not going to mix breeds. But that desn't mean that somebody doesn't get 10 points. The winner is...
